Supreme Court to weigh bans on puberty blockers, hormones for trans teens

You are understanding more than you let on, as i think your 'sauce for the goose' question is absolutely spot on! :)

Apologies for the legalese. In discrimination cases, when a state law is being challenged under the 14A equal protection clause because it treats groups of people differently, the court applies one of three standards of review (though the phrasing changes a bit over time): (i) for race distinctions, "strict scrutiny' which requires a compelling state interest and the law be narrowly tailored to address it; (ii) for sex distinctions, "intermediate" scrutiny, which means an important government interest and a law substantially tailored to it; and (iii) for everything else, 'rational basis' review, under which the law will be upheld unless the legislature acted irrationally (and by that, i mean, not even plausibly rationally) and within the scope of common law police powers. Here, the 6Cir and the state argue that the law doesn't even make sex-based classifications - it regulates puberty blockers and other transgender therapies regardless of the sex of the patient -- and thus 'rational basis' review applies. (IMO, this part is a little flimsy and a bit of linguistic sophistry and might well be struck down). My point earlier was to be careful about getting hung up on modern distinctions around transgender and sex -- because if the former isn't part of the latter, you're asking the Court - this court - to apply the 14A EP clause to a new type of protected class rather than just treating it as a form of "sex" discrimination (a bridge they've already crossed). And if they're not willing to do that and TG cases get addressed via rational basis review, it will be extraordinarily difficult for TG advocates - or per your hypothetical, either side really -- to challenge state laws in this area.

So, if this ends up as an intermediate scrutiny case (ie, the court rejects the state's rational basis argument adopted by the 6th circuit), it may still be the case that the state "wins" (I'd see ACB potentially "flipping back" to the conservatives more than NG), but more simply on the basis that states do have substantial police power interest with respect to medical care and minors (consistent with the way things sort of work out in a post Dobbs era).
So I am correct in my concerns that upholding these bans could end up with consequences many on the right would oppose. Would there be anything stopping a state of requiring all minor residents of a state to receive whatever vaccinations the state deems necessary regardless of public school enrollment or not?

Will Cryosleep ever be a real thing in the next 100 years?

I know, but I was thinking more along the lines of space travel. If we can induce coma's, I would think scientists would be able to use the same kinds of theories for extended "sleep".
"Project Hail Mary" uses this. It also demonstrates a big negative to using this method. If you haven't read the book I highly recommend it, it's written by the same author as "The Martian". It will also be a movie that's coming out next year I believe.

A curious Kirk in-game decision from 2018; like ISU this year

Remember when Kirk decided to take the points down 10-0 this year in the second half when most people think he should have gone for it? Kirk knew the 3-10 score puts more pressure on Nebraska, and he banked that Nebraska would end up Nebraskaing, which they did.
If he goes for it maybe we win 14-10 and don't need the walk off FG.

I'm not sure what the OP is really implying here. Sullivan as the starter and Stratton as the backup next year? Or the other way around? Anyway, as I keep hearing from everyone on this board about the Big Ten is the only conference to be in and we have all the money, are you really comfortable w/these 2 guys moving forward as 1-2 next year? Because they are both extremely limited in what they can do. Even if we don't get Moss ( don't think the swarm has the money to do it) we will need a starting QB next year. I'm comfortable w/Sullivan as a red zone guy or even a situational guy but his main starting role at UCLA he was all over the field. We also lose a running back that made this offense look way better than it probably was, a guy who could take it to the house at any moment. The backups look to have some ability but nowhere near the home run ability. We need a legitimate QB.
My concern with any QB Iowa has is the OL. They did a much better job of run blocking, and looked even better with a guy who hit home runs every game vs singles and doubles.

But no matter who was behind center, when it was time to throw, no one had the time. Nearly every pass the QBs were running for their life.

We seemed to have abandoned any PA, even before Lester. It also doesn’t help we are still so predictable. 3rd and long….DL pin their ears back and CB know there’s next to no chance having a pass completed over the top

For Iowa to have any chance at a playoff, they have to figure out the OL and the forward pass

Death, taxes and Iowa punking Nebraska on Black Friday . . .

The crazy thing is I called for a strip-sack with fumble and that's exactly what happened! My seat mate guessed interception. We knew it would be SOMETHING though 😂
Our D line was so good vs Maryland I felt like Raiola would be pressured and throw a late game pick. That was my expectation but the strip sack fumble works just as well. These last 2 losses for Nebby must be just brutal.

If you’re not going to donate to the Iowa Swarm

Then keep your fvcking mouth shut about Iowa athletics. Don’t say “we” need this player or “we” need to do this. Then don’t tell me I have a family to take care of that’s I won’t donate. Well then take care of your worthless family instead of worrying about Iowa athletics. Cheap tavern hawk bastards won’t even update their Iowa apparel. They’ve been wearing the same unlicensed crap for the past thirty years.
Assuming this is DRIPPING sarcasm.

Wow. I’ve lurked on this board for a few years and I’ve seen some craaaaaazy shit posted. But this might be the most unhinged nonsensical one yet. Congrats!

‘I wish you were dead,’ father tells Iowa City drag racing teen who caused daughter’s death

It's unbelievable the prosecution would take that deal. It was a clear cut case. I'm not for piling on juvenile defenders, especially with no prior criminal history.
But, their reckless behavior killed a young person with a future. They absolutely deserve some jail time. And, the financial penalty is not enough either.

what have republicans done to help the middle class?

Just wait until they start attacking Social Security and Medicaid, which only hurts the middle class. More theft by the wealthy, but hey! Let's vote for that. Cutting SS does NOT hurt the wealthy. It hurts the rest of us, yet we have middle class Americans fine with it because it beats being a democrat. SMH.
Do you have some valid reason for that speculation?

I'm not sure what the answers are moving forward, who will be coming and who will be leaving, etc. But I am a heck of a lot more confident in the QB room and QB coach than I was from 2021-2023, so I'm going to let it all play out and hope for the best, instead of expecting (and getting) the worst.
Wish we had that confidence in the OL and WR coaching

You said you called the late game turnover.. Here is what I posted in the lounge game thread half way through the 4th quarter.

"Kirk still waiting for their QB to make a huge mistake. Hopefully our D can make that happen"

As someone who grew up in SW Iowa when Nebby was good when I heard they were coming to the BIG I really expected them to be a yearly contender for the conference title.

So glad I was wrong about that.

I just got a flu shot!

@BrianNole777 , you will be pleased to learn that I got my seasonal flu shot this morning, which has been my consistent historical practice after a very unusual 3-4 consecutive year run of having to run out of midnight mass on christmas eve to throw up.

Separately, I really need to be a little more thoughtful about not scheduling my medical appointments during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. While I'm probably a little better situated than some previous years, it's depressing to go in ten pounds higher than my low summer cycling weight.

Also also wik...stopped in to see the Thomas Aquinas relic in Charlottesville yesterday with Aardvark jr on my way to DC. Pretty cool. This morning I gave a wonderfully faithful office services colleague a prayer card that I turned into a 3d class relic. I had told her about the relic tour a few weeks ago and it turned out she went to St. Dominic's in DC to see this past weekend. Her daughter has upcoming brain surgery, and she spent 6 hours there. Told me my letting her know about it was the best Christmas present she'd received in a long time. I cried a little when I got back to my office.
