The majority of bowl games are really, as you said, glorified practice games. Look at the attendance at some of these bowl games (not Iowa because Iowa fans have always traveled well).

Sigh, have you ever looked at the actual budget? My numbers are pulled straight from it. Let me walk you through it.

In 2023 we had receipts of $4.4 trillion and spent $6.1 trillion for a deficit of $1.7 trillion. The $1.7 trillion is ironically the same number as total discretionary spending. I did misspeak above in that judges, Congress and the President’s salaries are defined as mandatory. Still, the point remains we would need to eliminate all discretionary spending (including the military) or dramatically reduce social security/medicare etc to balance the budget if you don’t raise taxes.

The spending splits between mandatory spending, discretionary spending and interest on debt as follows:

• Mandatory: $3.8 trillion
  • Social security: $1.3T
  • Medicare+Medicade: $1.4T
  • Other mandatory (Veterans benefits, pensions, unemployment, etc): $1.0T
• Discretionary: $1.7 trillion
  • Defense: $0.8T
  • Everything else $0.9T
• Interest: $0.7 trillion

I'm still bitter about 1998. That's actually what drew me to start posting on warchant back in the day. I wouldn't say we were crushed in that game, other than our spirits. That game was winnable the entire game which is what made it especially frustrating.
