When did you realize your kid was/wasn't game for extra competitive sports?

Both my no pic daughters were multi sport athletes through high school.

My youngest was a soccer player through 8th grade. She started on a very competitive travel team in Chicago area, but was always grumbling about practice etc. She had all the symptoms of OPs kid and then some. As we approached high school we had the talk about commitment and her heart wasn’t in it. We explained the consequences of making a switch, but made it her choice.

She ended up dropping soccer and picking up cross country/track as substitutes and was much happier. Became a captain on both teams and had a great experience.

Oldest was a swimmer and had similar doubts about it in middle school. She decided to stay the course and became a captain on the swim team while continuing high end club swimming and a captain on the water polo team.

I think it is healthy to make it their choice, but with a little guidance on consequences. For me the requirement was they be active in something - whether sports, music, debate…whatever. I think staying involved is critical at that age for their social development, for discipline, and to show a commitment to seeing something through. But it doesn’t have to be the thing they grew up with to that point.

From the Tallahassee Democrat, 9/21/1969, page 1D, by Bill McGrotha
TALLAHASSEE, FL - If the playing conditions had been as they were here last night as Princeton and Rutgers played the first collegiate football game 100 years ago, there just wouldn't have been any centennial to crow about in 1969.

They would, surely, have forgotten the whole bit.

As frog-strangling rain fell from beginning to end, Florida State and Wichita State wallowed around in the slop looking for the football.

The visiting Shockers fumbled the football an incredible 17 times, with the Seminoles recovering 10 times. Meanwhile, Florida State fumbled 10 times, and Wichita State claimed seven of 'em.

The Seminoles won 24-0. If they played three times again under the same conditions it's doubtful whether Wichita State would score. The Shockers had every opportunity Saturday night.

In the first half, a startling turnout of 31,821 fans - oblivious to a disease called pnemonia - saw quarterback Bill Cappleman calmly ignore the adverse situation and complete eight of 11 passes for 125 yards as the Seminoles took a 17-0 lead.

But in the final half the quarterback managed only four completions in 16 tries for 55 yards. His receivers were dropping the ball right and left - but then, everyone else was too.

The Seminoles scored in the first quarter on Cappleman's 53-yard bomb to Tom Bailey and on Grant Guthrie's 40-yard field goal…
LOL; that was my first game as a freshman. Nearly drowned walking from Kellum to the stadium.

Why is Nebber such a lil bro to Iowa?? Why can’t they compete at our level?

I don’t know that they aren’t at our level. Our games seem to come down to a field goal more often than not, so I’d say we’re pretty close. For lack of one small gust of wind, Friday’s game goes into overtime.
If they ever stop living in the 90s and accept that 8-4 is not a fireable offense, they might someday build their program into something that can occasionally compete for a playoff spot. The days of Osborne are long gone. You can’t get away with sweeping things under the rug anymore. It’s time for them to accept that they aren’t the big fish in the little pond that was the Big 8. Once they do that, they can start advancing the program.

Incoming vs Outgoing

He will never take another meaningful snap as an Iowa Hawkeye, and people think we should put him on scholarship?!! He was never going to be offered a scholarship. And if he is and plays minutes next year we are looking at a three win Iowa football team.
Him having the best arm is more of an indictment of Brian Ferentz than anything.
Ok Coach… WTF 🤬?

I stumbled right in the most obvious trap, and the irony is I saw the purples first but thought they were the trap.
