Florida police open fire on unarmed suspect after confusing bouncing acorn for gunshot

Holy shit.

Mr Hernandez, who served two tours of Afghanistan as an officer but did not see direct combat, yelled “shots fired” repeatedly while discharging a volley of bullets at the vehicle.

When his colleague, Sergeant Beth Roberts, shouted to check if he was safe, Mr Hernandez groaned as he collapsed on his side and answered: “I’m hit! I’m hit!”

“He shot through the car,” Mr Hernandez added, pulling himself on his hands and knees to drag himself behind a nearby vehicle.

Believing her colleague had been shot as he stumbled around on the street, Ms Roberts then opened fire on the car herself.

Trapped on the back seat and wearing handcuffs, Mr Jackson said he could only slump down as the back windscreen shattered to avoid “getting shot in the head”.

“I’m good,” Mr Hernandez shouted as he sheltered behind a grey Tesla, gun still in hand. “I feel weird but I’m good… It might have hit my vest.”

Interviewed after the incident by Michael Hogan, an investigator, the deputy said he had “definitely” heard a “suppressed weapon” firing.

“I felt an impact on my right side, like upper torso area…my legs just give out,” he claimed.

When shown images from his bodycam footage of the acorn hitting his car, Mr Hernandez asked: “Acorn?” Mr Hogan confirmed: “Acorn.”

Caitlin Clark season honor thread

First up: ESPN gives her All-American and NPOY. Great write-up by Mike Voepel, whom I’ve had the privilege of working next to a few times this year.

SPOILER ALERT: She’s going to be *everybody’s* AA and POTY.

June 21st

This our big Swarm 2025 official visit weekend. The following are scheduled to visit that weekend, so far.

McCorkle - DB from Florida
Brooks - OT from CR
Herron - OG from Indy
Hudson - DT from Florida

I would sure like to see Epenesa's named added to this list. I assume there will be a Florida RB also. I expwct 1-2 WR.

The commited players always attend also.

POLL: The Talking Heads Presidential Election

  • I'd rather have my body cryofrozen. Wake me in 2028, if we're still here.

    Votes: 1 25.0%

Imagine 2 No Labels type organizations get on the ballots in every state. One with liberal talking heads, the other with conservative talking heads.

Exercising "poll-maker's choice" I've crafted these 2 slates and arranged them against the D and R and other tickets (as far as we know them).

How would you vote?

I didn't include a Libertarian ticket. They're flirting with RFK, and otherwise don't seem to have their act together.

Who is awake and what are you drinking?

Started with 2 white russians (not pRon stars, unfortunately) at a Ghey bar at about 4pm. The reason I specified Ghey bar is because, if you've not been and don't know how strong the pours (not poors) are, they were in tall glasses and the vodka and Khalua were poured to about 1 finger from the top. Then, a couple vodka and sugar free red bulls, then a couple vodka sodas... In case you couldn't tell from my replies to a couple other threads, I was over served. Thank God for Uber.

"really like to thank my parents for not changing my gender when I went through my tomboy phase"

Looks like another twitter brawl. Famous folk need to learn to just keep their views to themselves. Not worth it in the social media era.

The Greatest Night in Pop - Netflix

Up until last night I always viewed "We are the World" by USA for Africa as a hokey, self serving thing (which much of it was). But watching the making of that and you see all of the star power and egos in that one room together, you realize how incredible that thing was to make happen. Quincy Jones was amazing at making every one of those people feel like the biggest star in the room. He is like the Phil Jackson of music. And it was cool seeing how they arranged it. How the singers were paired based on their voice pitch.

Also cool to see how well respected Huey Lewis was as a singer at that time. Michael Jackson went to Kenny Loggins and asked who should follow him on his fill and Loggins essentially said, "Lewis has the best pipes in this room".

The Bob Dylan part/ dynamic was incredible. He spends most of the doc looking like a zombie, mumbling and you realize that he's just nervous about being relied on to sing well in front of all those people...who absolutely worship him. Also, Al Jarreau was hammered drunk and annoying. Cindi Lauper almost didn't go because her boyfriend told her he didn't think it was going to be a hit. Lionel Ritchie told her he was a fvcking idiot and it would be the biggest mistake of her life. Although it worked out OK for Prince. But Prince just didn't like being around a lot of people like that.

Also, Stevie Wonder was both annoying and awesome throughout. And Waylon Jennings was funny as shit in his one part.

Two thumbs up.

Iowa Women's Basketball Star Ranking

Decided to look at this tear's team and what the future might hold for the Hawk women.

Our current team as a lot of star power in addition to Caitlin. I'll break it down.

Starters:
Clark - 5 star - ranked 4 - 5 in the class
Martin - 3 star - no top 100 rank
Marshall - 3 star - no top 100 rank
Stuelke - 4 star - ranked #45 in 2022 class (may have been higher if she hadn't committed so early)
Affolter - 4 star - ranked # 48 in 2021 class

Certainly talent there but also shows Iowa's coaches ability to develop players.

Next five in:
Feurbach - 4 star - # 71
O'Grady - 4 star - # 92 in 2021 class
McCabe - 4star - #89 in 2021 class
Ediger - 4 star - #47 in 2021 class
Gyamfi - 4 star - #76 in 2022 class

The 2021 and 2022 classes had a top 20 rank
Unfortunately the 2023 class was small and with Jone's injuries and now Johnson Etienne's knee they haven't contributed on the court. You certainly can't measure the motivation the players get from watching Ava's work ethic though.

The incoming 2024 class is ranked # 9 nationally. Unfortunately - USC, UCLA, Oregon and Michigan are ranked higher. I like this class alot.

Heiden - 4 star - #40 ranked center at 6' 5"
Guyton - 4 star - #58 ranked PG
Mallegni - 4 star - #64 ranked PF at 6' 1"
Stremlow - 4 star - #91 ranked PG
Levin - not ranked but Iowa player of the year. Reminds me alot of Affolter

Add in our current 2025 commits:

Deal - 5 star - 6' guard - #12
Houston - 4 star 5' 11" wing - #36

Targets:
Skinner - 5 star PG - #10 rank
McGaughy - 5 star PF - #15 rank
Speiser - 5 star SG - #20 rank
Jernigan - 4 star SG/WF - #45 rank
Hays - 3 star center - unranked

If 2025 can fill out with Hays and one more 5 star, the stars will align for many more years of the Hawks flying high.

Go Hawks!
