12/1 Iowa vs NC State game thread

Really sad that Clark doesn't have a better supporting cast. It's actually kind of amazing how little both basketball teams have actually accomplished over the last four years with lifetime talents (Gustafson, Clark, Murray, Garza)
On the women’s side, they have accomplished a lot:

Gustafson era: Elite 8 & BIG Tourney Championship

Clark era: Big Ten regular season championship, BIG Tourney championship & Sweet 16

This is correct. The national championship was never realistic with this roster. Iowa women's hoops has still accomplished a lot in recent years. Both things can be true.

Its all about quickness/athleticism. If you can't make a wide open shot you are a liability. Clark is the best.
Hard disagree. Sure, being an elite defense comes down to genetics. But look at Indiana. Are Berger, Cardaño-Hilary, Holmes, Patberg elite defenders? No.

Cardaño-Hilary — the best defender on their team last year — wasn’t even known for defense until she got to IU. Good defense is coached. It’s a mindset. As a team, they get stops. Good defense is about effort, attitude, whatever you wanna call it. There’s a reason they say defense travels.

It’d be different if we didn’t have an elite offense — which we do have. If we have an A+ offense, we should only need a B defense to win games. If our bench isn’t hitting baskets, we should be able to get in these players face. This game was an F on defense. Our game against UConn WAS a B tbh…but an L is an L.

I don’t understand how the takeaway from the UConn game (which they should be proud of) wasn’t that defense kept us in it.

I get what you are saying shikreto and it is true. Defense is a mindset. But there is also a ceiling on how good you can be against good teams on defense with athletic limitations. Yes, Berger, Cardano-Hillary, Holmes, Patberg are much better than the Iowa starters in athleticism outside of Clark.

Fans will just need to adjust their expectations for this team. It's a good team, but pretty much the same team it has been for 2.5 years with Clark. Ceiling is trying to get 2 home games for the first 2 rounds of the tournament. I would be a bit surprised if they get that done this year.

we love the assist
pass up a good shot for a great shot
high FG %
time to screw that this year
win some games
have fun
really that are dying at the hype
have fun
caitlin's run was fun
that should be all game
monica .. wow yes face guarded
lets play players
we will still go like 20-7 or whatever
but no more shit losses like tonight or kansas state or creighton
or almost drake

I’ve never doubted Bluder as a coach before until this moment tbh. Your liabilities are right in front of you…and what? It really is new season, same shit.

I brought this up after Clark's freshman year when everyone was very excited about all the starters being around for multiple years going forward. The roster had no room for upside growth. None. Warnock, Marhsall, Martin and Czinano were all maxed out as players 2 years ago. They were skilled but not athletic players who were just never going to play defense well enough to be elite. They have been good, they won a Big 10 regular season and conference title, and have a Sweet 16 to boot. No one can take that away ever.

I'm not sure how much this improves even next year.

Iowa’s other 4 starters are role players off the bench on a legitimate title contender

There were some absolutely shocking stat lines in this game:

Czinano: 35 minutes, 5 points (2-4), 7 rebounds

Marshall: 29 minutes, 0 points (0-5), 1 rebound, 1 assist

Molly Davis, Taylor McCabe, Sydney Affolter, and Addison O’Grady: 28 minutes, 2 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists.

I’m just so frustrated. How do we play so unbelievably well against UConn and just completely collapse (…actually, not even show up) against NC state?

If it all comes down to recruiting elite athletes, i wanna stop caring and stop watching bc that’s depressing. I live down the street from UConn and I could go watch elite athletes pound on the plebes anytime I want.

She went off and they lose by 13 at home. When a transcendent player like Clark gets 45 points and you still lose handily at home to a very good team, but not one considered a national title contender, the rest of the roster is just bad.
Great night for Clark.
No defense no rebounding killed her effort.

If an old white guy like Coach Moore can recruit athletes than there is no excuse for Coach Bluder not to be able to land some too. The defense was just plain brutal and Diamond Johnson standing all of 5'5, did whatever she wanted to on the offensive end.

By the way Diamond Johnson was a Coach Stringer's 5* recruit at Rutgers who transferred to NC State after the freshman year. And people insist nowadays you have to be 6 feet tall to play PG.

The post-game presser was brutal. Bluder + Clark made no excuses.

I am a casual women's hoops fan and recognize Clark for the phenomenal player she is but what is the problem with Bluder's recruiting? It was painful watching an athletic NC State team carve up a slow of foot non-athletic Iowa team. This seems to be the issue every year. Beat up on the Big Ten teams that are equally unathletic and get wrecked by teams with athletes.

NC State has a nice team but as a casual fan it appears Bluder is going to waste one of the all time greats in Clark by putting mediocre talent around her. I get that Iowa isn't UCONN, but last night was embarrassing .
