165:
Top 3 are solid, but a lot of new faces here. For B1G, after Jordans, you have Wilson, Wanzek, Hammons, and Rodrigues(who's moving up 3 weight classes). I see potential for Paddock to really make an impression, maybe even up to 3 or 4 at B1Gs. I don't see R12 out of reach at Nationals. **Homer alert**

174:
Nice rank for Alex - I agree here, top 5. Realbuto is a bit high at #3, but we all know how Flo likes to reward wrestlers for moving up, so ranks them high before proving themselves at the new weight...;).

Hadn't seen that Realbuto was going up from 157 until now. Thought he looked great @ 157 so why the move up? Thanks in advance if I've missed any discussion on this previously.

I'd flip Alex and Butler, but being ranked #5 without ever being a full time starter is some serious respect. I don't think there's a guy here that he can't beat.

I'm pleased with #5. They factored in the loss to Cousins. I agree--huge opportunity for Meyer. Like 141, title is there for whoever grabs it. Meyer has the skill, the confidence, and the will to win; like Sorensen he needs consistency and a few more points of separation.

Interesting note: 125- 174 only 1 Gopher ranked - Wanzek #11 @ 165.. did I miss someone?

Iowa 3,2,NR,3,NR,NR,5

Nope. There will be 3 Gophers in the preseason rankings. Pfarr at 197 and Kroells at 285 will round it out.

I'm curious how they rank 184, given the way they've been ranking some of the weights. Brooks should certainly be ranked a bit higher than his R12 finish given the people he's beaten, and taking into account who his losses were.

Just a guess, but I think 184 will go:

1) Dean (no confirmation on RS)
2) Brown
3) Avery
4) Stauffer
5) Dechow (probably, but maybe Zilmer here)

After that it is kind of jumbled with Zilmer, Miklus, Courts, Dudley & Brooks, maybe even Abounader - could be anywhere but Dechow will be ahead of Brooks (H-T-H and better NCAA finish) and from the looks of their end of the season rankings probably Zilmer also. Tough with Zilmer, Brooks & Courts because Brooks should be ahead of Courts, Courts ahead of Zilmer, but then Zilmer has a great NCAA beating Dechow, Thomusseit, Dudley. And then you have Miklus. My guess is he will be 7-10.

Just looking at the rest of the weights and my guesses for Iowa - and PSU since I'm a PSU fan:

184
Brooks - 7
McCutcheon - 12

197
McIntosh - 1
Burak - 4

285
Nevills - 7
Stoll - ranked somewhere, maybe as high as 13, but probably in the 16,17 range.

Confirmation on Dean Oly RS - Cornell Lineup . **Also, Palacio is taking an Olympic Red shirt (165).

Yes, I saw that last week. I don't think that FLO will take that guys interview as confirmation - Koll didn't say 100%, just said it was on the table.

Palacio is ranked at 165.

I can't shake this feeling that a healthy Sammy Brooks is wrestling for national title come March.

Sammy Brooks has the strength and style to be one of the best guys in any weight. Seeing him at #11, although hard to argue him too much higher, makes me sick just knowing how much talent he has. Most of the guys above him are not in his class of wrestler. If he has learned how to convert better from the underhook and stay healthy he will have a special season.

It also wouldn't hurt him if they actually make guys wrestle to get out of a underhook instead of just backing up and getting a restart.

It's a winnable weight without Dean, but very deep with "5-loss" type of guys and everyone returning. Can't complain about #11 ranking right now. Brooks must separate himself from the herd...find fifth gear. From a team points perspective, a finalist vs. R12 is..."HUGE," as The Donald would say.

Much like last year I feel like this is a key weight for Iowa/tOSU/PSU/OSU. If you flip Courts and Brooks results at NCAAs, which going into the tournament would have been very easy to envision, last year the team score is 95 tOSU 91 Iowa. While not the total difference, pretty close.

184 is huge since none of the big teams have a sure fire guy here. Out of the top teams I think we have the only guy actually capable of winning it all.

re: 184...Brooks should be in the thick of it. There are lots of defense-and ride-minded (and stall) guys at this weight. And some of them are incredibly good at winning matches this way. That's not Brooks' style; to win he has to finish his takedown attempts (forgive me if I sound like Captain Obvious)

Like Dean did in the match at NCAA's? Brooks had him deep with the underhook and could have possibly locked up a bear hug on Dean but Dean just back peddled straight out of bounds and there wasn't even a thought of a stall call. When you run out of bounds and it is clear to everyone that you did it to avoid getting taken down and possibly to your back that is F'n stalling. I forget but is there a fleeing the mat call?

It is my understand that Palacio was hurt at the end of the season and had surgery.

Almost every guy that Brooks wrestled did this. He for sure needs to get better at setting something up here but the refs are certainly doing him no favors.

He also needs to get better at setting stuff up when he doesn't have an underhook.

Brooks has a really good shot, but i'm not exactly sure what his setup is, it seems to me like some sort of outside tie bump and just times it really well then steps into a snatch single. But when he hits it, which is pretty often, he makes his opponent look kinda silly, like they just stepped right into it while they're reaching.

Imagine what a push-out rule would do for Brooks. If fleeing the mat isn't going to be called -- and we all know it won't be called most of the time, especially at Nationals -- a push-out rule must be instituted.

Schwab, you reading? Doug's on the Rules Committee. Wish he'd insist on a push-out rule.

He likes an over/under to an inside trip...works well for him sometimes.

He's also got great sweep singles, snap downs, foot sweep leg attacks from a 2 on 1. Hes fun to watch, he can come at you down low, up top, or anywhere in between.

Hell after watching the NCAA video, I am guessing the refs can't wait to use this ridiculous push stall rule against Iowa.

You watch guys will back up to the edge and then a guy like Brooks will run him out with a underhook and Brooks will get called for stalling.

Just Peaked at 184.
I thought Sam beat Courts the only two times they met last year.
Beat him straight up twice. Yes, Courts placed 5th and that is something but the head to head has to count for something in this.

I like Sammy's chances VERY much of placing MUCH higher than 11th when it counts next March. These rankings will just light a fire under him. The more fuel for the fire, the better. I'd rather see a ranking like this than an undeservedly high one.

197 - Borat comes in at #4(link). Man, this weight really cleared out. If Cox RS, then Borat goes to #3 and has great chance to make finals - B1G and Nationals.

That makes 5 guys ranked in top 5 for Iowa.
