There is plenty of discussion regarding who the Hawks will have at 165.

Right now it’s the O’Toole/Carr show.
Monday is gone and it appears Griffith is moving up.

The weight is still a meat grinder. Hamiti, Amine and Ramirez are ahead of our guys. Hamiti hasn’t beaten Amine. PK has split with Amine and hasn’t been able to find an answer for Hamiti. Amine’s ultra defensive style always gives him a chance. Ramirez can beat anyone if he’s on. Whether it’s PK or Caliendo it’s going to be interesting to see how it shakes out and if we have made improvements.

We need better results at this weight to contend for Championships and high finishes. There is work to do.

It is crazy to think that in the last 6 years at this weight between the the Bull and PK that Iowa only has 2 AA (low at that) with how strong we were at the weight. The weight has been brutal for years now too.
Past 6 years we have 4 AA at the weight. Bull in 2021 (R12) and PK last year (R16) are the years we didn't AA there.

I think it speaks volumes to just how tough of a weight class 165 always has been

Mesenbrink is legit, but 165 just isn't a weight where a true freshman walks in and wins it all. Mind you, 157 was very "average" for both Haines and Taylor and even they couldn't get it done...
Isn't Mesenbrink a RS freshman? I thought he attended Cal Berkeley or Cal Poly or one of those smart schools before taking the NIL train to PSU?

It was Cal Baptist. He only wrestled 2 matches so I pretty much blanked on that part. With all that said and the way redshirts are used, I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends at least 5 years at PSU. But, you are correct, he technically will be considered a RS Frosh next season…

Messenbrink is a freestyle dynamo to be sure, he’s not out folking O’Toole and/or Carr as a true frosh. Somehow O’Toole got even better last year.
I'm not saying he will beat either of them at this point in his career, but I think if he faces either one of them, he will be in the match and push them to the end.
