By all accounts, Downey will be at 184 as of Midlands if he becomes eligible. This leads to a few questions.

1. Is Wilcke going 197 all year or is he competing with Downey for the 184 spot? If he is going 197, how is his size compared to last year?

2. How are the new guys (Warner and Cook) looking in the room? Will Warner be a redshirt regardless of what Lee does? As for Cook, if he is regaining his form then I then he could be dangerous by the end of the year with his athleticism.

I traveled the world this summer so have missed out on posting much. I am going to address a few things in one post.

Wilke has put on some size but doesn't look like a full 197. Warner is a stud who would compete well right now. Cook has been better than expected out of the gate. He has a ways to go with his cardio. He is nowhere near Downey and Brooks but can hang for awhile with some of the others. He is a great guy to have in the room.

Lee could go this year. It will be up to how he is feeling. He wants 4 healthy post seasons since he can win it this year if healthy. RS is risky because you lose that post season if you RS and get hurt another year. Last year I said less than 1% chance that Bull goes. This year my hunch is that Spencer doesn't RS if he is 100% late in the season.

This is an exciting year we could have 6 weights with different starters in January. Some will depend on where OSU and PSU are at with health. Carl has been tampering like crazy trying to get a 125 mid season transfer and he normally gets what he wants.

Downey was a great pick up. He is working hard and pushing those around him. He has a different feel and a load of talent. Hope PD2 stays off here and both guys let his wrestling do the talking. PD2 just needs to ignore the negative comments. He does a lot more bad than good when he sticks up for his son.

I thought Teske was a Hawk but maybe not. We have bigger needs and he will find out the hard way that Carl is a scumbag. Teasdale is going to try 125 his first year. If it goes well Teske won't see the lineup. Same with when Carl gets a top tier transfer.

I read someone say Nelson will possibly be an AA late in his career. That poster should ask a couple of our middle weight studs how much fun Nelson is to wrestle. I think he would have a different opinion on his career potential.

It is nice seeing less whining about recruiting. Usually there is a meltdown by now. I expect at least 1 more top guy to join a pretty good class. We still need to do better. I didn't like reading that we haven't contacted Brooks. We should be making contact with any kid that has made a cadet or jr world team, or AA"s at Fargo at a minimum. Gauge interest and bring them in for unofficials. If they are a fit than recruit the hell out of them earlier than any team in the country. We have to outwork the other schools since Iowa high school wrestling has been lagging.

Get your season tickets. We need to continue putting up big crowds even in a supposed down year. We claim to be the best fans. Prove it with season tickets. Buy 2 extra this year and donate or bring friends. It will cost you about $15 dollars a month for 2 extra tickets.

.

If one of the reasons we went after Teske hard is on the principle of always trying to land the best instate kid, I personally think we have that covered already with Brands.

Holloway. What he did at 285 was pretty impressive last yr considering he is no where close to being a HWT.

Really love this last paragraph and couldn't agree more. This is the perfect year for the biggest and most passionate fan base in college wrestling to make a statement. Let's keep the momentum going and fill Carver for every home meet. As you all know, season wrestling tickets are very reasonably priced. If each of the diehard fans (as the budget allowed) bought a couple extras and gave them to friends, we really could fill the place for every darn home meet, "big" and "not so big" meets included. Definitely an opportunity for the fans to make an impact on recruiting, too. Widening the attendance gap on the rest of college wrestling will make a statement to recruits and can only help the Hawks land more top studs.

Carl and tampering is old hat going back to his ISU days, he makes his own rules. An NCAA slap down would be nice.

I agree with you. Brands doesn't just get that insane amount of takedowns by accident. The kid will be hell on wheels and is truly going to a huge sleeper that the top P4P rankings just cant factor in effort and upside. So what a kid beats him at a national tournament his JR year in HS. Lets line up that said kid in 2-3 yrs and we can re visit who Nelson Brands is and has become.

Plus this is a commodity that is free to this team. The other teams are paying full market value for the few guys ranked ahead of him. Such a win win its unreal.

I said i feel brands will have a similar career to Alex Meyer. Its not a knock. Just because Brands gets a bunch of TD's on Iowa kids doesn't make him sure fire AA. He hasn't done all that well at national tournaments and he doesn't have any elite wins. I understand he is a Brands and is from Iowa, but he has a long way to go. I also posted that I hope 100% he makes me eat my words and become a undefeated 4 time national champion.

Wilcke will for sure be our 197 this year, unless of injury and then I imagine we throw Cook out there unless Warner has some great results.

As I said previously, from what I've been hearing is that Warner is hell on wheels on his feet but struggles on bottom. A lot of that can be attributed to not really being challenged the last 2 years of his career and his immense focus on freestyle, not to mention he needs to put on some muscle from the eye test. I think he's a guy who is a low AA or R12 guy this year if he went but a potential finalist next year. Hoping he goes to U23 but no clue on if that's happening or not.

Any chance Holloway makes 97?

Except Nelson gets more TD's at a weekend tourney than Meyer would have in a month back at SEP.

Meyer holds the career takedown record at SEP.

http://www.sepwrestling.com/records.html

Meyers career record of 714 is impressive and averaged out over 4 yrs = 178.5 per season
Even more impressive is Miklus holds the single season at 368. Kid was a machine his SR year. Had he not been at Ballard for 2 years he would hold the career.

Brands had:
Soph 321
Jr 454 State Record
Just in 2yrs 775 surpasses Meyers Career without even wrestling his SR season or counting a TD from his FR season.

Let that sink in for a second. I have no issue with Alex Meyer but I look at these numbers the way Billy Bean looks at baseball hitters. What I mean is if some hitter has an insane on base percentage of say .800%. Its going to translate. That is too much activity and he is wired that way. We could debate national wins all day but I can argue the Gambralls over the Wrights don't matter with the end potential. I would have taken Wright out of HS, the wingspan and ability he has you cant teach. IMO you cant teach a suicide pace. Its going to be fun to watch grow.

You don't have to give your NCAA title back to the kid in high school who beat you at Fargo or Dapper Dan who never won one.

You know, since I live in Nashville, the chance of me attending more than one or two meets would be slim to none, but I like you and the other poster's comments about giving them to others who may not otherwise attend. Since I live in Nashville is it pretty easy to transfer my seats for a meet to another person, or would I have to send tickets via snail mail? And what's the best way to buy season tickets, and the best seats (section) to get them in? Thank you! :)

You can have the school hold tickets at will call.

No, but did the year before and didn't place.

I see. I think Nelson's been showing a lot of improvement year to year. He didn't begin wrestling until middle school if I recall. Curious how he would have done this year.

You could also donate them to Wrestling for Life! I bet @GG121AND2 could find a use for them!

According to recent reports Nelson is looking great. Like already can hold his own with the Bull.
If true that is highly encouraging. I'm extremely excited to see how his suicide pace translates to the college level, especially after he has another 1-3 years before he hits the lineup. Do recent reports have him looking more like a college 157 or 165? If he's at 157 he'll be a 3 yr starter behind Kemerer and a 2 yr behind the Bull at 165, unless he gets creative with grayshirting or earns himself an olympic redshirt by winning a JR world medal or something.. etc. I love the trajectory he's on.

Yep Slim no clue whether he will be a legend in just the practice room or not. Just info from Perry and Morningstar. First hand talk last Thursday. Sorry for reporting to "Hawk" fans what the staff said. So joke all you want. By the way, shouldn't you be more worried about your son than how Nelson is progressing? You are a coach right? So are you jealous 1 coach's son in this conversation isn't a f-up pal? WTF!

Don't mind him.
Always like hearing what's going on in the practice room. Is it embelished or not? Who cares. It makes for good discussion which is the point here, right?
Discussion killers on a discussion forum makes no sense to me, but some guys seem to get off on it.

Not trying to be a prick. Simply reporting what I heard. And don't care for the mocking of "legends of the practice room" like all BS when I got it from the coaches. And this guy's son last I know isn't a practice room legend or even a participant. So he should back off.

PBS has a pretty good sense of humor I would say. I can get riled up from time to time myself, so not trying to be a hypocrite, but I would take this particular instance with a grain of salt, rather than a perceived slight.

PBS typically means no harm IMO, of course he can speak for himself as well. Just an FYI I guess.

KujawaFan,

Coming from a guy whose intent gets misread often, I can tell you that you misread Mr. Early to the extreme. He has had an ongoing theme for making fun of practice room stories no matter who the source is.

Reacting the way you did was actually pretty cruel for what little he said. No one wants to be attacked for negative things about their child. Especially as a reaction to a harmless joke about practice room results. Jmho
