ISU doesn’t have more S16s than Iowa. Maybe over the past X years but not overall.

Yeah….thanks for providing the numbers behind my statement.

Thought it would be fun to see record in games. Iowa has won 48 to 29 wins for ISU. Started in 1909. Iowa won 17 out of 18, 1909 games through 1920. So really since then, 1920, it has been pretty even 31 wins for Hawks and 28 for Clones. Since 2000 it is 12 for Hawks and 13 for Clones. After all those games only one went to Overtime.

Holy history Batman, where were you able to find all those stats? Thanks for the work digging them up.

Beating a top 10 teams for ISU is just par for the course. No one stormed the court, it was just another game in the Big 12. At least half of ISU's conference games will be against top 25 teams. A week ago someone listed the toughest SOS remaining, and all 14 Big 12 schools ranked as 1 through 14, and ISU was #1 on toughest remaining SOS. Win or lose, it is fun playing this kind of schedule. Next year, we get to add Arizona to the mix. Would not surprise me if Houston, Kansas, and Arizona make up 3 of the final four this year.
Big 12 is overrated as hell

Iowa State has gone to 6 Sweet 16
Sweet Sixteen Appearances: 6 (1986, 1997, 2000, 2014, 2016, 2022)
They have gone to the tournament 22 times.

The Hawks have gone 8 times.
Appearances: 8 (1955, 1956, 1970, 1980, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1999)
Iowa has made 28 appearances in tournament.
Actually the late 70’s and early 80’s iowa had teams make it to the second round which would be the final 16 I believe.

In 1955 and 1956 they started in the round of 16. It’s a bit different scenario post 1986.

You have to win 2 games to get to the sweet 16. If you win one game and get to second round there are 32 teams left. So, if you win on Thursday or Friday in first weekend, you will play on Saturday or Sunday of same weekend.
What years are you talking about?

Yes but it doesn’t matter. All the schools played under the same rules. Historically, Iowa is better in any sport that matters. ISU likely has an edge in Cross Country or Under Water Basket Weaving.

So, the Hawks made and were in the sweet 16 in 1955 and 1956. Does it matter how you make the sweet 16. Every team had the same chance.

The tournament expanded to 64 in 1986. Before that it was one (or zero) games to the sweet 16.

Iowa State’s one final 4 they made I think they won one game to get there. It’s not as meaningful as a modern one.

The field didn’t expand to 64 until 85-86

I would put ISUs starting 5 against almost anyone. If they avoid a 8/9 seed (which they should), I think they are a lock for a Sweet 16 and can make a deep run.

This is coming from an Iowa grad who hates ISU.

ISU embraces a different type of athlete than what Fran does...and they play defense which Fran teams/lineups don't do.

ISU probably not going to go beyond sweet16 but since Iowa hasn't gotten that far in 14 years of Fran, I am envious when I see a coach start from zero and surpass Fran's lifetime achievements in NCAA tourney in year #1.

I think Fran ought to be able to embrace some defense, get more athletic and do something post season but he won't change. Being stubborn and having old man's disease towards change and nepotism are all character flaws imho.

As good as ISU may or may not be this year, they have a ceiling and aren't winning anything, just like us. In the end, they can advance as far as they want, unless they win it, nothing changes. Beating Houston does nothing to change that narrative.

Just like Iowa WBB last year or when we beat #4 PSU in football. It meant something to us fans but in reality, nobody else cares unless it matters at the end of the year and there's only one way to make it matter as we all know. ISU won't matter when it's all said and done, we know that. We've been down this road before with both ISU and Iowa numerous times.

So that's great for them on the win, that's cool. Hopefully ISU does something with it. History says no though. I know it's cynical but it's also unfortunately true.
I actually agree with this. CC is completely irrelevant to anyone but Iowa fans since she has never won a national championship. Better hope she gets one or the most celebrated athlete in school history has meant nothing!

I mean that’s what he’s saying. It’s just ridiculous. Enjoy each great moment or season. Some are better than others. If I was an ISU fan who wouldn’t enjoy knocking off the number 2 team in the country?

I don't think it's overrated at all. It's been an extremely strong conference basketball-wise for a number of years, especially recently. In football however, I'd absolutely agree with you although I doubt anyone would think B12 is overrated on that side. I don't see many people giving them any respect in football and I'm inclined to agree outside of a select few teams, of which, are gone now.

Gheez, reading comprehension is either lacking in the Cyclone world or this is a deliberately obtuse post to try and undermine my post. This is not at all what I'm saying and I'm sure you're probably aware of that, I hope anyway.

Maybe overrated was a bad choice of words.
I don’t think they’re as good this year as the computers say. Kansas is really good. I don’t know.

ISU currently down 18 at BYU (who doesn't have their leading scorer playing). And this ... Ward gets booted.

BYU must be DAMN good. Pounded ISU while missing maybe their best player. Meanwhile, 5 star Omaha B., the best recruit in ISU history played 3 minutes with zero points.
Wonder where he will be next season?

Enjoy b-ball season because the Little 12 will be a complete JOKE in football.
Houston was no more the 2nd best team in the country than any one of 30 other teams. They played a horrible non-league schedule and have already lost their first two road games in league play.

BYU is a very fun team. Reminds me of old Hoiberg teams. Just bomb away from 3 and really push the pace. Had Iowa State completely spread out. There will be games where they don’t hit and then it will be ugly. But last night was a clinic, good on them.

They are still #1 in the NET. Losing road games to TCU and Iowa State doesn’t mean really anything and they picked up 3 Q1 wins in their horrible noncon.

ISU is a tournament team, who plays really good defense and is very physical. As easily they could lose first round, they could definitely make the sweet 16, and I wouldn't be surprised by either. As for the Big 12, it's really good this year, the Big 10 looks like garbage.

As far as Houston, they are also really really good. Incredible backcourt, with Cryer and Shead (likely best in the country), who went a combined 2-14 from 3. There are no doubts that in games where a team has to travel acrossed the country, the home team has a massive home court advantage. Throw in Hilton's atmosphere, and that game was ripe for ISU to beat them. Props to their fans for actually showing up to a game compared to us. This is no different than when Wisky goes to PSU and loses, or ISU goes to BYU and gets handled. Life on the road in college bball is a struggle for 99% of teams.

One thing matters: only league champions could go. Both teams would have had more appearances under todays system.
And some teams got to play on their home court.

Way to jinx it. ISU beats 2 ranked teams (1 on the road) and another win against KSU.
