Iowa offered Tyler Nickel on June 24, 2020.

He has set up official visits for all 5.

Contrary to what @73CAV said in the other thread, UNC has not kept mum on when Tyler will visit UNC.

Here is an Aug 9 video of what Tar Heel Illustrated recruiting folks are saying. They talk about Tyler at the very beginning.

Some things discussed in the first 10 minutes that may weigh in Tyler's decision:

* UNC has 3 commits for 2022 already.
* UNC already has a full roster
* UNC has offered some big time, 5 Star prospects for 2023
* UNC won't be afraid of using the transfer portal in 2022

Does Tyler want to stand out and get a ton of playing time at a place like Iowa or get lost at UNC? ;)

They also discuss Cam Whitmore after Nickel. They think UNC lands one or the other, because both Cam & Tyler will be looking for playing time.

So, keep an eye on Cam Whitmore, who visits UNC on Aug 22nd & 23rd. When UNC offered, he called it a National Championship offer.

NOTE that one Rivals Publisher has Whitmore going to Maryland. However, if UNC wows Cam and he commits to UNC, then Nickel might be deciding between Virginia Tech and Iowa.

Here are North Carolina's 2022 Commits so far:

Iowa offered Josh Dix on April 21, 2021.

He took an Unofficial Visit to Iowa on June 8, 2021

On June 8, 2021 Tom Kakert forecasted Josh to IOWA.

Wisconsin offered Josh on Aug 5.

The orig post has been updated.

As you can see:

Iowa has now extended 31 offers for the 2022 cycle.

2 Have Committed (Dasonte & Riley, who later reclassified to 2021)
16 Committed Elsewhere
13 Still Undecided

With just 2 scholarships left, one likely goes to a SG and one likely goes to a big.

What's interesting is that the last 3 RECENT offers were to bigs.

Click on the blue name below to see their offer list & more. As you can see, 70% of fans project Jaxon to Iowa. ;)

Jaxon, of course, is visiting IOWA on Sep 3
.

The Last 3 Recent Offers were to Bigs:

Dominick Barlow (Offered Aug 12, 2021)
SF, 6'8", 205, Dumont, NJ

Braden Huff (Offered July 25, 2021)
PF, 6'9", 200, Glen Ellyn, IL

Jaxon Kohler (Offered July 19, 2021)
C, 6'8", 210, American Fork, UT

OFFICIAL VISIT is Sep 3

How does it work in basketball recruiting? With so many offers out and really only a couple of true open spots, how do we manage that? Is it first come first served? It just seems like a complex game of musical chairs.

What if, for example, multiple SG's phone Fran on same day and say I'm Committed!
Basically first come first serve. Many schools make “non-commitable” offers to players too, so their offer is only contingent on a top target going elsewhere. In your scenario, Fran is probably calling the second SG immediately after the first commits that the offer is no longer on the table. But if SG #2 is the priority recruit, then Fran could choose not to accept the commit from SG#1 - risky move!

Iowa has two scholarship spots opening up for sure next year, with Ash/Bohannon coming off the books. There is some level of likelihood that more will open up if Keegan decides to go pro (which to me seems highly likely) and/or Connor chooses not to exercise his COVID year (less likely, but maybe he decides he’d rather come back in a grad assistant capacity 🙂). With the growing popularity of the transfer portal, there is always the chance that we lose a player or two there as well

Anybody looked at Barlow’s videos? He looks like a very special player. I fear we may be late to the party on him.

I have said for a while now that I think Fran takes one SG and one big.

If both Jaden Schutt & Josh Dix wanted to commit on the same day, I think he takes Schutt and says sorry to Dix. But who knows what Fran is thinking; maybe he would take both when he considers annual losses to the transfer portal and possibly losing Keegan next year to the NBA draft. And if nothing else, he also has Patrick's scholarship to play with.

If that scenario happens…. You take both, no doubt.

He says I got you covered cmon down

Side note: I have never been fond of unbalanced classes.

Right now, half (six) of our 13 scholarship players will be juniors in 2022-2023.

6'11" C Josh Ogundele

6'4" G Tony Perkins

6'2" G Ahron Ulis

6'8" F Keegan Murray

6'8" F Kris Murray

6'9" SF Patrick McCaffery

But what does Fran say when Tyler Nickel calls Fran the next morning and says "hey, I see that you are now out of scholarships!" ;)
"Hold please"
(on other line) "Connor? Get your baseball gear ready"

Iowa offered Dominick Barlow on Aug 12, 2021.

As you can see in the tweet below, he has had a great summer and the offers have started to roll in.

On Aug 5 alone he received offers from South Carolina, Florida, IONA and Syracuse.

Whitmore is far more likely to go to UNC than Maryland. Maryland is not a factor from what I’ve heard. Whitmore is not a fan of Turgeon.

@Hawkstrat @eyesofhawk

My sense is that Whitmore moved his visit to UNC up ahead of Nickel's and that UNC encouraged this because they prefer him slightly. A UNC message board member has a contact to Whitmore who indicated if he visited UNC that he would commit, so that is best case scenario for us - a Whitmore commitment the week of the 23rd.

Virginia Tech is local but their offense is nothing like Fran's offense, so I'd like our chances given Nickel's comments about how his fit into a system - a fast paced system - seems a high priority.

The Tar Heels Illustrated guy also said UNC would prefer Whitmore over Nickel if they could only choose 1 or the other. But don't tell Iowa fans this; they will say it's more evidence that Fran only gets the table scraps and is a lousy recruiter. ;)

Nickel, in the interviews I have posted in this thread, also has made it clear he wants to be part of a program that helps him reach his goal of making it to the NBA. Garza & Weezy getting drafted helps a lot.

In addition, Nickel has been compared to Wieskamp. Fran can easily show Tyler how he will excel at Iowa and how in 3 years he, too, can make the jump to the NBA.

Here are a few more videos of Jaxon Kohler.

He has some Garzilla in him.

Jaxon lists himself as a 6'10” PF on his Twitter page. He is also listed below at 6'10." Rivals used to have him at 6'8;" they now have him at 6'9."

Guessing Rivals changed as Jaxon told our very own Blair "I'm 6'9"

The 6'10" on his Twitter is likely from the natural bonus points everyone gets on Twitter. For example, my salary as far as Twitter is concerned, is 7 figures.

Thanks to you guys for posting the videos.....

He appears to be quicker and a little more athletic than Garza at that age. He also appears to have a better handle than Luka, but did not see much evidence of a 3 point shot. I do think that I have seen the 3 point shot previously.

Obviously he's not as big or strong as Garza and the main Garza trait for success, is Luka's work ethic. We have no idea what Jaxon K's work ethic is like, but based on his current skill level it must be pretty good.

This young man is a recruit that I would love to see playing for our Hawks.

interesting. i wonder why that Rivals Publisher forecasted him to Maryland then.
You been following Iowa football recruiting at all? We had about half a dozen guys forecasted to iowa go elsewhere this summer.

Maybe these publishers do have a little scoop at one point, but things frequently change. The only reason the insiders have a high forecast percentage is because they change their picks at the last second.
