It will be interesting to see what happens here.

Drake has been in on Josh the longest (they offered June 29, 2020).

Iowa offered Josh on April 21, 2021.

Wisconsin offered just recently (August 5th).

On June 8, 2021 Tom Kakert forecasted Josh to IOWA

Will that forecast hold up?

Sep 3rd is a big weekend for Iowa basketball with both Jaxon Kohler & Josh Dix visiting.

On today's Hawkeye Report Podcast, at the 31:30 mark @TomKakert and Matt Randazzo talk the latest on basketball recruiting.

They open talking about Dasonte Bowen.

Josh Dix is in Iowa City Sep 3 and in Madison Sep 10. Tom said that these are the only 2 OV's he's scheduled so far. Tom said he may make OV's to Drake &/or Utah. Tom discusses which 2 schools might be Josh's finalists.

Tom said to plan on Josh being deliberate about the decision process (ie, he won't leave Iowa City & commit the next morning)

Tom also discusses Jaxon Kohler and what he would bring to Iowa. Jaxon also plans on visiting USC, Oklahoma & Nebraska.

Tom gives an update on Aidan Shaw. One school apparently has a 0% chance of landing him. Guess which school that is. Aidan is gonna decide by Sep 17.

Tom gives an update on Tyler Nickel as well. He visits Sep 17. Virginia Tech & Iowa (the schools he's scheduled OVs) seem to be in pretty good shape.

Sep 17 could be a big day/weekend for Iowa when Aidan Shaw & Tyler Nickel make/could make their choice.

They then discuss if Iowa would take Dix, Nickel and Shaw with only 2 scholarships remaining.

Lots of good stuff here.

I've seen this question discussed often. I'm not sure if my opinion will be popular, but in this new age -- when players are able to easily enter the transfer portal and change schools without penalty; and when there are increasing incentives to go pro early (even if you can't make an NBA roster) -- I think it only makes sense for coaches to over-sign in their recruiting classes.

In many cases, it will work itself out. If not, you simply ask someone who doesn't fit into the team's future plans to move on. A few years ago, we used to call that "Creaning," in a disparaging way. But if there's going to be an erosion of player loyalty to a school (out of an interest of "doing what's best" for the player), it only makes sense that there be a corresponding erosion of school loyalty to players (out of an interest of "doing what's best" for the program.)

In other words, given the opportunity, Iowa should absolutely take all three of Dix, Nickel, and Shaw -- and Kohler, too, for that matter.

Of course, at Iowa, Fran has the added flexibility of taking his own kid off scholarship. But even if he didn't have that flexibility, I wouldn't blame him for over-signing, then letting the chips fall as they will.

I think Fran can sign up to 3 because one of three things would then happen to get to 13 on scholarship:

* Keegan leaves early for the NBA
* A player (or 2) leaves via transfer portal
* Worst case, if the 2 items above don't happen, Fran takes PMac off scholarship

Thanks.

Also, on June 8, 2021 Tom Kakert forecasted Josh to IOWA.

I think Dix is Iowa's to lose.

And, as was discussed, a lot of good things could happen the weekend of Sep 17.
Where? Where are the comments from Dix, a coach of his, or any other insider that he is Iowa's to lose? Kakert said on that podcast it seems like it is down to Iowa and Wisconsin. Wisconsin is the new kid in town and had far from the same playing style as Fran. Taking an OV there despite that makes it seem like he's just not totally feeling like IC is home. Now, I'm sure that will be countered with someone saying he's taking his time, and that may be the case, maybe.

Don't get me wrong, I would be very happy for him to commit, but this unsupported implication he's a slam dunk to be a Hawkeye is, still, beyond perplexing.

Feel better Fitz, why all the emotion?
ha! I mean, I do have a sinus infection at the moment...otherwise all is well.

I have loved following this thread and thank Franisdaman for maintaining it, it is just confusing to me why he has that opinion and keeps stating it with only citing Kakert as the reason. To me, saying someone is Iowa's to lose means the kid has had glowing reviews and praise for Iowa. I haven't seen a single article that has that tone or feel to it in terms of his feelings for Iowa.

I get exactly what you are saying…. I think the assumption (I know what they say) is that TK interviewed the kid and either got some comments or got the read that the kid favored the Hawks….but that is no guarantee.

On June 8 Tom forecasted Josh to Iowa. Publishers normally don't forecast a prospect to a school unless they have solid information.

So, that was close to 3 months ago. Fran now needs to close the deal on Sep 3.

And nothing, unfortunately, is a slam dunk in recruiting.

Just an fyi....

Iowa offered Isaac Traudt on Sep 16, 2020.

Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina and Virginia were among his final schools.

He picked Virginia, which obviously implies that the head coaches at Michigan State, Nebraska and North Carolina are lazy and horrible recruiters. ;)

First time I've watched this kid's film. I think even Ray Charles could see the striking similarities to Garza's game. His footwork, high motor, below-the-rim wizardry, all Garza to a T.

If he had a similar work ethic, he'd do great in the B1G Ten. How's his outside shooting? Still a work in progress?

from everything I have seen and read, he can score from everywhere: down low, mid range or from 3

If you missed this podcast, it is worth a listen. Besides Iowa, Jaxon also plans on visiting USC, Oklahoma & Nebraska.

And based on this, he might not be making his decision for a while.

I loved his comments about the Hawks....but he is a very well spoken and open young man who had pretty good things to say about each team...just a little more detail and at a little higher level than most recruits.

Check this out and watch:

These last two clips in this thread show A LOT more about his game. He is crafty AF and that one legged fade away shot is saucy. He knows how to use his body, use pump fakes, use his pivot, use the spin dribble, how to keep the ball high on rebounds, and how to create space. He then also can put it in the hole.

He scored 53 because the other team was athletic but not thick, and they couldn't stop him from getting where he wanted because he was too skilled. Against players his own size and strength it would have been much harder, but he still would have had 30 and 10 perhaps.

As Garza learned, it all works great until you run into a 7 footer with length and strength and then he couldn't score inside. This kid is a bit shorter by 1-2" with only slightly better foot speed so more of a PF perhaps. Ideally he could grow a bit more if possible because he's ahead of Garza at this stage, but not quite his size.

Love, love his game though. Add in a hook shot to handle the bigger posts who won't let you get where you want and he will kill at the college level - and stay for all 4 years too. Has a little Doncic flair to his game although missing the euro slow step finishes :)

This was my take too - incredibly skilled, but would be limited against guys with talent + size + are a little more wily/experienced on defense.

But we'd also all sign up even 50% of Garza, and while I am *not* comparing them as players, I would have never thought Doncic would be able to do what he does in the NBA, so its probably a good thing my kids dont depend on my scouting acumen to feed them

I am glad I posted them ;)

Thanks for your insights.

I just wish he wasn't still taking OV's in October.

Its going to be interesting. Jaxon also plans on visiting USC, Oklahoma & Nebraska (October 8-10).

Iowa could be out of scholarships by the time he makes all his visits and makes a decision (likely sometime mid October).
