2022 Recruiting (1 Scholarship Left): Jaxon Kohler & Josh Dix VISITED Sep3, Tyler Nickel Sep17. Aidan Shaw VISITED Jun23. Kyle Filipowski to Duke

But you have to admit, for being a lazy and horrible recruiter, Fran sure did throw the kitchen sink at Jaxon & Josh this weekend. ;)
Just who in the holy hell is saying Fran is lazy? You keep saying this, who are the posters stating this???

Fran needs to C-L-O-S-E on kids like Kohler, Dix, Nickel, Shaw. Close, not get them on campus and have them say great things about their visit then go and commit somewhere else. GET A COMMIT TO BECOME A HAWKEYE, not some participation trophy and a "well, he got them to visit!"

The good news, thus far, is that none of the above have committed elsewhere, yet. So there is still time and open slots for Fran.

See the thread linked at the end of this post, where someone reminded everyone, and I quote, Some say that he's lazy.

Start by reading post #8 and post #9 and then keep reading; you will see the "lazy" discussion and a couple posters who called him that.

On today's Hawkeye Report Podcast, at the 31:30 mark @TomKakert and Matt Randazzo talk the latest on basketball recruiting.

They open talking about Dasonte Bowen.

Josh Dix is in Iowa City Sep 3 and in Madison Sep 10. Tom said that these are the only 2 OV's he's scheduled so far. Tom said he may make OV's to Drake &/or Utah. Tom discusses which 2 schools might be Josh's finalists.

Tom said to plan on Josh being deliberate about the decision process (ie, he won't leave Iowa City & commit the next morning)

Tom also discusses Jaxon Kohler and what he would bring to Iowa. Jaxon also plans on visiting USC, Oklahoma & Nebraska.

Tom gives an update on Aidan Shaw. One school apparently has a 0% chance of landing him. Guess which school that is. Aidan is gonna decide by Sep 17.

Tom gives an update on Tyler Nickel as well. He visits Sep 17. Virginia Tech & Iowa (the schools he's scheduled OVs) seem to be in pretty good shape.

Sep 17 could be a big day/weekend for Iowa when Aidan Shaw & Tyler Nickel make/could make their choice.

They then discuss if Iowa would take Dix, Nickel and Shaw with only 2 scholarships remaining.

Lots of good stuff here.

So ‘a couple’ of posters have gotten us this ‘beat the dead horse’ again and again approach? That is so nice that so few have earned so many the joy of seeing it repeatedly. If they come here and ‘take it back’ could it stop?
Or do you want to fall into the ‘we want more’ category?

Calm down and quit overreacting. Fran has been criticized over and over when it comes to recruiting.

And it is not just me who has sarcastically mentioned that he's lazy (when, of course, he is not). But you conveniently ignore that.

Gotta agree with Fran. If all the hullabaloo that occurred in IC this weekend didn't impress these kids, then I'm not sure what would. Great weather, great football atmosphere and the pummeling of Indiana. Great fan reaction to the recruits. Everything was practically perfect. Hope they make the right choice.

I would go more with annoyed. The majority of the criticism that I see for Fran and recruiting is that people wish he could close on a few more top prospects. He gets praise for ability to spot the talent early and be ahead of the curve in offering. That is the overwhelming opinion that is on this board.......but you conveniently ignore that(sorry I had to, it fit perfectly) there have been some(few to very few) who use the 'lazy' tag.
For whatever the reason those few to very few have stuck in your craw and you keep playing that card. If it is for potential new readers of the board then rock on. As someone who follows it fairly closely it gets old. I would post a gif of someone beating a dead horse for emphasis but that is old as well. Love your content and how you keep us informed. I do thing that your first line to me could be used as well on certain issues that strike a nerve with you.

Fran does a good job evaluating talent - they don't always hit, but his hit rate on kids ranked 150-300 is very high relative to average. I also think he and the staff work very hard at it and do a lot of good things.

The difficulty is getting Top 150 kids from out of state - especially black kids (who make up 90% of the Top 100 give or take) when the program hasn't yet cracked the Elite 8. So while I get that some people are frustrated, he's still running up hill a bit trying to get Top 100 out of state black kids to Iowa when our facilities and brand don't stick out much.

Last year did help our brand quite a bit, and Fran's offense is something to sell for sure. As is the stability of our staff and our fan base. Eventually it will pay off, but I don't see any other coach we could get do much better as long as they aren't cheating. Alford had tons of brand recognition and didn't do any better.

I never added up all the people on here who called him lazy; I clearly just gave examples of people calling him a lazy recruiter when OTHERS brought up that Fran had been called a lazy recruiter. So you are being dishonest about what I posted.

And as I stated already, others have sarcastically brought up the lazy recruiter theme that exists on this board; it is not just me. But you conveniently forget that. (sorry, had to fit that in perfectly). One would think that everyone who does it would stick in your craw and you would respond to everyone doing it. But, you are anything but consistent when it comes to what annoys you.

And those same people like yourself who wish he could close on a "few more" top prospects forget about him landing Dasonte, Luka, Tyler Cook, Adam Woodbury, Mike Gesell and others. You conveniently ignore those facts (sorry, I had to fit that in perfectly).

And those same people like yourself who wish he could close on a "few more" top prospects forget that it is not just Iowa losing out on some of these top prospects. 28 other schools missed out on landing Kyle Filipowski. 13 other schools missed out on landing Jaden Schutt. And those are just 2 examples. But you conveniently ignore that (sorry, I had to fit that in perfectly).

And, no, he does not get overwhelming praise for spotting the talent early on, and you know why? Because there are many "experts" on here who quickly counter that and say it does not matter unless he lands them.

Gosh, your post is full of holes. You can do better.

But, hey, you want a "few more" commits and expect Fran to do better? And, of course, you don't define what a "few more" means.

It's pretty clear that what Fran has accomplished in recruiting & will accomplish this year and in years to come will never be enough. You will always want a "few more."

And it was perfect having Luka (an East coast kid) there to tell a West coast kid how great Iowa City is and how Fran's system is perfect for his game.

FWIW, in October 2019, Kenyon Murray posted this about his kids, recruiting, getting kids from out of state, and our facilities.

My boys did their announcement and then turned off their notifications. They never wanted to do the showcases that “rate” players. They wanted to stay in the gym, work on their weaknesses and play the game the right way.

We have the facilities to compete with anyone, and I think having some very good home grown talent meshed with kids like Toussant, Ulis and Perkins (all major cities) will help open up recruiting in the future!

It is very hard to recruit kids to Iowa. I am not sure it is even worth the time and effort to get one and done kids. Sure you would take one if you could get him but it may be much better to get a Tyler Cook for 3 years or a Luka for 4. Given the limitations of our location, I think the staff does a marvelous job.

What I posted
‘The majority of the criticism that I see for Fran and recruiting is that people wish he could close on a few more top prospects.
‘I see’ is far different than ‘I believe’ or even ‘I think’
Maybe I should type in bold to help you understand the difference.
The good news is you went to a decent amount of work to use a bad basis to poke holes in my post.
“you will see the "lazy" discussion and a couple posters who called him that.”
Odd that you mentioned ‘couple’
Perhaps I need to review other posts to see if other people have mentioned ‘lazy’ as often as you have.

It is absolutely better to get Cooks and Lukas. Literally NO ONE is asking for top 10 recruits/1 and dones. LITERALLY, no one. I don't think anyone is asking for 5 stars. Live life in recruiting in the HIGH 3 star and 4 star range. That elevates the floor of talent on the roster and hopefully means more than the customary 1 and done...in the NCAAs... which, gasp, leads to better players.

The program has had more airtime in the last two years due to Garza than any other two year run this century (and likely back to the early 80s) and this class needs to be a reflection of that. Bowen is a GREAT GET, the great gets can't stop there in this class or it is a failure to capitalize on that exposure.

The class is not finalized, we all know that, but the home stretch is on the horizon.

Well since you have responded you must have felt they were worth reading

I will do all I can to stop being annoying, irritated and irrational poster.

If you would do me the favor of responding to what I post rather than what you thought I posted that would be great.

I am also aware that when posters stop addressing what has been posted and start the name calling and grammar critiquing that their position doesn’t have a good foundation.

Once again, I enjoy the information that you post and that you are meticulous on keeping it accurate and up to date. This isn’t personal. My apologies that you have taken that way.

Is 53 points and 23 rebounds good? That seems good. ;)

Jaxon visits Sep 3.

Good story on Aidan Shaw & Jaxon Kohler, 2 prospects Iowa is after.

8 days ago, Sunday Aug 29, is when the Championship Game was played where Jaxon put up 53 pts/ 23 rebounds.

Event Recap: Pangos All-American Festival

Updated: a day ago

In the latest edition of ‘P.I. Pulse’, Pro Insight’s Conrad Chow recaps the Pangos All-American Festival by highlighting the top 2022 standouts in attendance after spending the weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the annual Pangos All-American Camp to be cancelled due to the overcapacity of having 100+ campers in one building. However, the silver lining was the creation of the Pangos All-American Festival, a top-40 showcase, which focused on honoring rising seniors and celebrating their accomplishments to date.

Split into four regional teams (East, West, Midwest and South), the Festival consisted of a final four format with two semi-finals and then a consolation and championship game the next day.

The 2020 inaugural edition featured a plethora of now big name college freshmen including Paolo Banchero (Event MVP), Nolan Hickman, Jabari Smith, TyTy Washington, and Chet Holmgren among others.

While some class of 2022 invitees were unable to attend due to injury and other commitments this year, there was no shortage of talent at the Amplus Academy - Durango Campus.

For those not in the building or able to catch the live streams on BallerTV, here’s our breakdown of the 2021 Pangos All-American Festival:

Class of 2022 Standouts

Jaxon Kohler
Southern California Academy (CA) | 6’9 Big

Going for 53 points and 23 rebounds in the championship game, Kohler took home MVP honors and put on an offensive clinic. Standing at 6’9 and weighing in at 230 pounds, the Utah native is a skilled big man with impeccable footwork, soft touch, and craftiness in the post. While not overly bouncy, he uses his size well to get inside the paint and score with high efficiency down low. Kohler can hit face-up jumpers as well with the capability of stretching out to the perimeter. There are not too many high school bigs in this era who have a developed post repertoire that includes such a varied series of shot and ball fakes. The next step in his development track would be to hone skills as a facilitator out of the post, similar to Marc Gasol and Nikola Jokic.

Aidan Shaw
Blue Valley HS (KS) | 6’9 Forward

Invited to his second Pangos All-American Festival, Shaw proved this year he not only belonged, but also stood out by showcasing his inside-outside presence and versatile upside. Shaw was the top performer of the consolation game (11/15 FG and 3 threes) and took no plays off, using his length to block shots and finishing with force in the paint. It was impressive to see a lanky forward with a functional handle, rim protection ability, and an ever-improving shooting stroke. The potential as a pick-and-pop guy is clearly there as Shaw confidently knocked down spot-ups and even dribbled out into a smooth three-pointer, or two. Shaw has narrowed his list down to six: Kansas, Missouri, Maryland, Arkansas, Iowa, and Oklahoma State.

'Team West,' the 2021 Pangos AA Festival Champions.

Fran....in that video there are two guys to the left and slightly in front of Patrick. One has a grey T Shirt and appears to be taller than Patrick and one has a white T Shirt and appears to be about the same height as Patrick. Is Kohler the kid in the white T? If so, who is the kid in the grey T?

Jaxon Kohler (white shirt, pointing)
Josh Dix
Cooper Koch

white long sleeve shirt, not sure

"white long sleeve shirt, not sure".......thinking this is Koch's younger brother Looks like the same kid standing next to him in the picture of the Koch gang? That's my wild guess anyway.....I wonder what 6' 11"ish kid we are recruiting in 2023....the Gray shirt, not sure to Kohler's left? Owen Freeman?

Could be Owen; I wish he'd look towards the camera.

Another option is Braden Huff who Iowa offered July 25, 2021.

That would be nice if it was Huff.....an unofficial visit from him on a weekend like that should at least get his interest to the point where he would consider taking an official for another game.

Huff might be a better guess.

Yeah, it's hard to tell just by looking from the side

And all the buzz was for Jaxon and Josh; very little was mentioned concerning other visitors

Kind of looks like Reed Bailey's profile as well

Thank you for that observation.

You & @perryhawk are good detectives. We have 4 of 5 ID'd and we have several suspects who could be that final, unidentified prospect. ;)

You know what's weird about Reed, who's listed as 6'10", by the way? He committed to Davidson on Aug 4 but now Rivals has him listed as uncommitted. So, not sure what's going on with him.
