2025 MBB Recruiting Thread

I see a futurecast predicting Chase to Iowa. He would be a great start to the class.

Good catch.

Our very own Eliot Clough put in that prediction yesterday, Sep 9, at 7:33 PM.

Alexandria, MN is 137 miles (just over 2 hours) northwest of the University of Minnesota/Williams Arena, home of the Gophers.

Good get (hopefully) for the Hawks; another in-state miss (hopefully) for the Gophers, although Rivals reports him with Power Conference offers from just Iowa (officially visited Sep 7), West Virginia (officially visited June 23), Nebraska and Clemson.

Kinda figured going into the weekend he was near a verbal. Down to Iowa and West Virginia and he’s from Minnesota. Now Iowa needs some guards. Will be interesting if they can make any headway with Mosley this weekend. He is considered a combo guard by most services.

Agree. Good to add a good player at any position with several scholarships available, but Iowa needs to add 2 guards, preferably at least 1 who can play PG.

Mosley would be the guy to get. But see he’s visiting LSU after Iowa and we all know how that usually works out.

Spoiler alert: He's not down to Iowa and West Virginia.

So, for those more in the know, is there a good chance that Iowa will have two commitments in the next week or so? Thompson isn't a position of need, but he gives quality depth and helps insure against portal transfers out. Some players might be unhappy with playing time, especially at the 3/4 positions. Mosely/Walker is a high position of need, but IMO, a PG is an even more important need, either through recruiting or the portal.

An under-athletic 6’8 white guy? Can never have too many of those!
I am not really sure how to phrase this question, and I am not trying to be curtisj here, but does Fran purposely try to recruit as many white players as he can?

It just seems to me most of these out-of-state recruits are white. Again, I am not trying to be curtisj, but it just seems odd in this era of college basketball.

You know what, screw it.

@curtisj157, what the hell is going on here?

It’s been a bit of an issue at Iowa since the mid 90’s it seems.

I was worried my comment would awaken the likes of curtisj. . . Before he gets here, I want to give my take.

I think the problem is twofold:
  1. Fran prioritizes shooting and ball control over athleticism. That's why Toussaint struggled to see the floor over Bohannon in '21 and '22.
    • Not saying black athletes can't be both uber athletic and great shooters - but those types of players are 4-5 star recruits that would never come to Iowa. You rarely find an all-around player like that outside of the top 100, so schools like Iowa kind of have to pick and choose what skills they prioritize. Fran has a track record for taking lengthy shooters over athletic players that lack fundamentals. Just so happens that white players typically fall in the former category rather than the latter.
  2. Fran might have trouble connecting with black athletes since he is labelled as the "old angry white guy from Iowa". That moniker is fine if you win a lot (see Bobby Knight) but it makes things more difficult on the recruiting trail when your program struggles to raise banners. Perceptions shape reality . . .

This makes a lot of sense.

It's not like Fran doesn't offer scholarships to black kids. There obviously has to be mutual interest to get that black kid to commit.

Of the 13 on scholarship for 2024-2025, there are 4 black players. And I am sure that is not enough for some of you. And I am sure Fran is sorry for the outrage he has caused. NOT.

Okay.

I am not curtisj.

There is no outrage.

I’m just curious what other opinions were and if there was some reason for it. It’s just unusual in today’s game is all.
