2025 MBB Recruiting Thread

You would think that after 3 years in the program and having been redshirted last year, Fran and his staff would have some inkling of what he can or can't do. Iowa is known as a developmental program. As you have said, why hold on to him if you're going to recruit over him every year with players that are smaller. Doesn't make since to me, so I guess that we have to wait until Friday or whenever to find out whether he was a bust or not.
Either way, it doesn't look good that Fran recruits a three star and near 7 footer player that had offers from other D1 programs and barely plays him.
Scholarships are precisions and shouldn't be given to players that can't contribute to winning games and if Riley is one of those players shame on Fran.
I think the better question is WHY in year three would you redshirt a 7' player who supposedly has upside when we were in desperate need of a post player, and had to bring in a 6'9" forward who couldn't defend literally anyone, and another guy who evidently just came in to carry Pmacs gym bag to practice.

Looks like another skilled 6'8 PF that ends up at OSU and not Iowa. Sutherland, Sensebaugh, et al...
A boat load of $$$$$. Nebraska was offering North of $100K, I've been told by a buddy in Omaha. OSU has insane NIL $$$'s for sports. Most goes to Football, then Men's basketball, Women's basketball and Wrestling.

Is it too early to start looking for players who may be hitting the portal for next years roster? Seems like we need players who can come in and contribute asap.

If Fran doesn't find a quality HS PG, he definitely needs to hit the portal. Maybe 2 guards would be better, a PG and a combo guard. I hope we can keep our core players after this year, but it almost seems likely that the 4 who doesn't get much playing time could move on. Still haven't seen Traore much, but he could be the logical replacement for Payton, along with Pryce, at 3. He might not hang around if he isn't getting significant minutes.

Still no commitments.

The portal will be more important than HS recruiting the way the current system is set up. Iowa is set at the PF & SF positions for the next couple of years. Just need guards, guards & back up centers.
The current system is dysfunctional at best. The idea that we don't need high school recruits, that we can just wait for the portal to open, and all of our needs will be fulfilled, is pie in the sky thinking. Iowa's NIL is substandard and we need guards, guards and more guards.

We need both, especially given our limited NIL $$$

What ever happened in the recruitment of Diakite and the forward from Canada? I thought we would hear something positive from both by now.
I’ve read (on another board) that the forward from Canada wanted NIL that we couldn’t or wouldn’t meet……don’t know how strong that info is…..take it for what it’s worth.

Iowa should focus on foreign players who aren't eligible for NIL. Not only easier to get, probably easier to keep too. Takes awhile to build that pipeline though. I like the angle we're taking with Tadjo, Dembele and the new kid to perhaps create a niche we can use in recruiting. We're going to need strategies like that to compete.

I’m gonna “yes and” you by adding to the list under-the-radar transfers like Traore and Thelwell. Behind the scenes, the Iowa staff has been building relationships with the agents who represent these types of players. I think there’s a lot of opportunity in this area, as we’ve seen with this year’s newcomers.

While true by rule, we might be naive to think money doesn't change hands there too.

As my wife Margaret tells me often, Fran is no dummy. ;)

Next year, 4 of the 13 available scholarships (31%) will be going to players from West Africa.

The West Africa pipeline to Iowa City:

(1) 2025 commit Badara Diakite is from Bamako, Mali (located in West Africa).

(2) Freshman Nogbou Chris Tadjo was born in West Africa before moving to Montreal Canada; his parents/family are from Ivory Coast (southern West Africa).

(3) Seydou Traore is originally from Mali in West Africa. His parents are Abraham Traore & Mariam Sylla.

(4) Sophomore Ladji Dembele is also originally from Mali in West Africa.

Not sure if it's by plan or by coincidence, but if these 4 West African players find success at Iowa, that could be a very valuable recruiting pipeline for Iowa for years to come.

Coach Dillard recently went to watch JJ Frakes, a 6-4 guard out of Michigan.

I know highlight videos make a lot of prospects look like a 5 star but that is one white boy with some serious game. That kid can get any shot he wants off the dribble and has some bad bunnies.

If Iowa were to land him, I think even curtisj would be happy with this Panera Bread hooper.
