Multiple trips to various beach communities between Orange Beach, AL and PCB, FL. Although I’ve been vacationing in those places for decades, it will be big fun swimming, fishing, and boating in the Gulf of America for the first time!!!!!!!

PROTIP: it's the same water.

We are going to Belgium, the Netherlands and Paris in May.

My dad was a part of the Battle of the Bulge. His tank destroyer was hit. Everyone in it was either killed or ran away except for him. He was blinded and deafened. He was taken prisoner and a German doctor brought back most of his eyesight and hearing.

We are going to start in Amsterdam and see the tulips and visit a friend who is a professor at a Dutch University. Then we are taking a quick trip to Paris for two nights to see the fixed up Notre Dame. We have been in it numerous times but it was always rather dark because of the hundreds of years of burning candles to light it up. The videos we have seen show a sparkling clean interior that we are eager to see.

Then to Brussels and Bruges. Looking forward to the chocolate, especially the hot chocolate.

Then, the impetus for the trip, heading over to Bastogne to check out the Battle of the Bulge historical sites. My younger brother has been there and says that the museum there is the best he has ever been to.
My uncle also fought in Battle of the Bulge as did his lifelong friend. His friend wrote a short memoir and it is just insane for me to wrap my head around.

Torg, that's terrific. Not TD (though the 705 was involved), I'm planning on putting together a tour of a regiment in France and then scouting my next tour group for Netherlands and Belgium.

If you don't have a room in Paris, this place is terrific and quaint : https://www.mylittlehomeinparis.com/ and relatively cheap.

Make sure you have an idea where you'll be going on the WW2 stuff. Most tours highlight an area or a famous unit (in Bastogne it will be mostly Easy 506 which didn't actually see much fighting there compared to other companies/regiments.

The main group of TDs at Bastonge were with the 101st Airborne with the 705. 609 was around too. The armored elements were scattered due to the German offensive. Might have been attached to the 10th. Do you know his Team? O'hara was 501 and 327 and saw a hell of a lot of fighting near Wiltz/Wiltz Road near Marvie and Arlon Road to the west of Marvie.

Was your dad in Market Garden?

If you need some help, I can put you in touch with a couple of different tour guides/experts, but I prefer doing my own research.

My Dad was in the BofB as well. 2nd Armored Division. What a miracle for your Dad, and how blessed that was for him.
Just doing some research on Fold3. He was in the 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion. "B" Company First Platoon. He was a First Lt. They list all the folks in his and all platoons.

Check out my response to Goldmom.

In reading the history on Fold3 about the 811th I discovered that his Tank Destroyer was hit by a bazooka on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge, in the Mullerthal region of Luxembourg. He was taken prisoner then.

IIowaFarmBoy: 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion is in the 80th Division of the 101st Airborne Division, I think according to Fold3.
What is Market Garden? I would appreciate any info you can provide, thanks.
We have been to Paris about a dozen times, thanks though.

Last year in Paris we stayed at https://www.patiosdumarais.com and liked it a lot. We usually stay in Le Marais. But I do like the area you recommended also.

My daughter (I've posted a pic or two before) is doing her last OT placement in Colo. Springs, so hope to get out there in March. In late May I'm gonna take a kayak up to Voyageurs National Park (never been) and do some exploring.

Market Garden was the invasion of the Netherlands (bridge too far).

at Bastogne, things were chaotic. I'm an expert at the 101st there, and 10th armored. He was likely west, but I do think a group of TDs from the 811th was near Mageret on the east side of Bastogne fighting with Team O'Hara of the 10th. Depends on the company. If you have someone who really knows what they are doing...great. Otherwise, I know a few guys who likely can give a lot of detail. Otherwise familes go over, get a general tour and leave not really knowing where their relative fought.

On the east side of the town, elements of the 811 fought against Panzer Lehr, blocking the Longvilly Road long enough for the 101 and 10th to set up better. Hell of a bunch of fights. I think other elements of the 811 fought the Germans bypassing Bastogne and fought to relieve the 101, first making contact on the 28th (?) with the 327 Glider Infantry on the sw area of Bastogne.

The 101 was light infantry and generally didn't fight with armor as they weren't equipped to defend tanks or what the Germans sent at tanks/tank destroyers.

Regardless, have a great trip.

Let's move on to something more pleasant, shall we. What are y'all's 2025 Vacation Plans? My middle daughter is stationed at NSA-W, so we're going to spend the week of Thanksgiving in D.C. getting a personalized tour. ...probably a beach trip over the summer.

What about my fellow HBOTers?
Lake house on a small lake connecting to Lake Michigan over the 4th.

My uncles’s friend was a POW. He was around 6’5” and came out weighing 125#. His memoir talks about watching soldiers get executed, being fed maggots as meal, and dog being considered a delicacy.

My Dad’s cousin was also a POW of the Nazis. Beaten so much he lost hearing in one ear. Tough young man who came back home and had a very successful Wall Street career.

A couple more Key West trips before March; Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City early March; National Park trip in early May; NYC for Fleet Week for Memorial weekend; Looking at South America (Argentina?) early winter; the Key West trips start up again in September

Anyone ever done an African Safari?
I have zero interest in a safari. The unrest over such a wide portion of the Continent is a bit too scary and the sort of fake stagey viewing of the animals does not appeal to me in the least. But that’s just me.

We had a big travel year in ‘24 and don’t have anything on the books for this year. With where we think the economy is headed we are focusing on battening down the hatches here.

My wife is trying to talk me into a Disney cruise with the kids. I'd rather commit hari-kari with a spoon than be stuck on Disney for 7 days

Trying to talk her into going back to Turks and Caicos.

Also talked about the Dominican or skiing in Colorado. Basically, we're not sure yet.

We did a 3 night cruise to The Bahamas last year and throughly enjoyed it. The kids loved it as well.

A river cruise in April and May thru Portugal and Spain. A river cruise in September thru Hungary, Austria and Germany. A week in Key West at the start of october. A week in Mexico somewhere in between.

Wait until you know who is older. PLEASE.
I have friends who took their kids on that cruise. Chicken nuggets and French fries on the high seas. 😵‍💫🤮
Do something else instead. Do Colorado in summer. Or Grand Canyon maybe.
A cruise with a hyper kiddo is just a bit scary.

Everyone I know that has been on a Disney cruise say they're fantastic. I'm just over Disney.

We've had APs for 7 years and the Disney thing has gotten old for me
I get it. I questioned it as well. I don’t know that I could do 7 days, but 3 was pretty nice. The kids got to go off on their own and the No pic wife and I had some time to ourselves. I’d prefer other vacations, but the Disney Cruise wasn’t horrible.
