Spencer Lee is 27 points away from breaking Iowa’s school record for most career points at the NCAA championships. He has scored 76 individual points thus far in 3 seasons (27, 24.5, 24.5). Ed Banach is 1st in school history at 102.5 for a career.
Spencer needs 12.5 points to pass Tom Brands.(20th) and 24.5 points to become only the 4th ever over the century mark (Cael, Stieber, Ed).

Let’s hope he’s close to 100% so he can make a run at these records.

(I also know that some of these are with old scoring)
Interesting List

The top career bonus points at nationals:
1. Cal 27.5
2. Gable 27
3. Taylor 27

It is amazing what Gable did in 3 seasons. To put it in perspective, if Spencer pinned his way through nationals his next time through he would only get to 26 (unless he could find a way to get seeded 32nd or 33rd).

A champion has to win all five of his matches. You get 21 advancement and placement points for winning, and Spencer could gain 10 bonus points for pinning his way through the tourney. So 31 possible points.

Spencer has 16 bonus points so far. He can get 10 more. That is 26 bonus points. You seem to have confused my post about bonus points with total points.

Can someone exlplain the scoring differences changes from Banach’s time for the younger crowd? TIA

No tech fall.
No bye point.
Partial consolations - only those who lost to a semifinalist got to wrestle back for 3rd. (Full consos didn't start until 1996.)

Placing then: 16-12-9-7-5-3-2-1 (8 places started in 1979)
Placing now: 16-12-10-9-7-6-4-3

Bonus then: fall 1, superior decision (12+) 3/4, major decision (8+) 1/2
Bonus now: 2, 1.5, 1

1 bonus point for a pin and 1/2 point for a Major Decision. Bye points were not awarded for advancement, if you won your match following a bye.
1980 2 falls & 2 majors. 3 bonus
1981 3 falls & 2 majors 4 bonus
1982 3 falls & 1 major 3.5 bonus
1983 2 falls & 1 major 2.5 bonus
13 bonus Points
