7-day rolling average of deaths drops to 560 on July 1

lol, we're leading the world in shitty responses and you people are talking about optimism and football. It's surreal.
We can't even get a majority of people to agree to wear masks because - freedom!!
I want some of whatever you all are drinking because that's some good kool-aid.
What I see is another lost year for my kids because our adults couldn't act like adults for 3 months like the rest of the GD world.
This is it precisely. I am beyond fed up with the assholes who refuse to realize they are the problem and jacking things up for the rest of us. Won't wear masks. Say it's the flu. Believe Dear Leader and his administration's lies. We can't have nice things now because they are entitled American babies.

On the positive side, less brain trauma for your son.

My son has had 1 concussion from sports and it wasn’t football. He got one in a Jr High basketball game where he was undercut while attempting a layup. We watch him very closely and will pull him from football if another happens.

I’m not denying that there isn’t an head trauma issue from playing sports, but to focus so much on football is an easy route to take. I’ve had 5 or 6 concussions in my life, none were from football. Most were from me doing stupid things.

Unfortunately, I agree. For so much talk about "listen to the science" and "decisions should be data based" most of the reactions have only involved listening to the frightening science and making decisions based on panic.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends in-person school for this fall, and lists all of the reasons online classes will create more harm than good. But do you see this mentioned in the media anywhere? And is it even influencing anyone's opinion?

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is now mandating people wear masks ON THE BEACH. Never mind that this environment is about as safe as can be - cases are up in some southern states, that is the loud headline every day, so they decided to virtue signal rather than be pragmatic.
Have you seen the data and analysis offered by @EthicalSkeptic on Twitter? I don't know who the person is, but he has done a great job, in my opinion, highlighting the fuller context and giving rational explanations that do not support most of what has been and continues to be emphasized in the media. He is a must follow during this pandemic.

Tell the 40% of the people that think it is their constitutional right to not have to wear a mask in places that require masks that they don't have to and then when they complain and don't comply be willing to punch them right in the mouth.

Do you really think it’s 40%. I think it’s much higher. When we actually leave the house and go somewhere, we are in the 10% wearing a mask. Anyone who thinks this is an R vs D thing, there are plenty of people under the age of 30 out there partying it up, not wearing masks, who I guarantee you are not Republican voters. I know a whole crew of 19 and 20 year olds who just hit the Lake of the Ozarks this week. No masks or social distancing in any of their FB photos.

I cannot argue that those stories are out there but you heard about the recommendation from the AAP through the media, right? Those stories are out there too. If, and I know this is a HUGE IF, people would act responsibly and both sides would stop politicizing it, many of the horror stories would go away.

Actually, lol, I heard about it through a Facebook post that had a link to the AAP website. Sure, the major media outlets have the story. But it’s not exactly the lead story on the 6:30 news, or a newspaper headline. And, as was my initial point, people who want schools to be online are unfazed.

They are the dumb****s throwing Covid parties to see who gets it first.
The bad thing is to ever achieve herd immunity this thing needs to burn through the younger population. Might be better off getting everyone to campus and just letting it happen.

Problem is people still think concussions are the problem. It’s bigger than that.

The deeper statistics show that this is exactly what is happening in Florida.

The average age of those diagnosed in June is 38 compared to 52 in April and May.

Hospital rates are 4% in June compared to 15% in April and May.

Known case fatality in June is 0.4% compared to 4% in April and May.

There are plenty of ICU beds and ventilators still available, and it is very likely to stay that way given the demographics of those getting diagnosed.

Everyone should. We wouldn’t be where we’re at today if people had. 128,000 dead and counting, think about that number.
Nobody is stopping you from staying in your home for the next 1-2 years. I hope you have enough money saved up to live on.

So.....a mortality rate of 0.00039000609 (128,000 deaths divided by the US population of 328.2 million).

Meanwhile, 647,000 people die of heart disease per year. It is estimated that 606,520 people will die of cancer in 2020. 135,720 are estimated will die from lung and bronchus cancer.....that is more than have currently died from the coronavirus.

Available ICU beds have dropped by a third in Florida from ~1500 to ~1000 in the last week. While 1000 may still be plenty, it won't be if the trend continues.

I continue to be encouraged by the numbers on the areas that were hit really hard from the start- NY, NJ, PA- and their continuous decline. That hopefully means that it has run its course and near the end in those places.

I absolutely believe the majority of the fear and panic is media driven. Every "news" story is a drumbeat of the most frightening possible information, while any positive news is ignored. It is 24 hours a day of constant, shrill, screaming, panic porn. It has to be influencing people.

This is accurate. Those who own the information will always bend it however they want to. It is an indisputable fact that people cling to their tv's/radios/news sources more when in uncertain times. It DRIVES ad revenue. Again, this is not opinion. It's a fact.
I guess its that or advocating for actively spreading a virus that we know will kill and permanently change the health of many. Totally cool of you being for killing others.

Yes. Advocating for a safe and sensible reopening of the country is the same as telling someone to shoot themselves in the head.

Pretty sure he can't see my post but this guy is a freaking moron. Comparing heart disease to Covid. They are totally alike.

On a side note, in Florida, they have had more cases today, with their population of around 21 million than, China, Indonesia, Japan, EU, Australia, Vietnam, Korea combined...with 2.6 billion people. That is absolute failure that can lay at the feet of the idiot president, and their idiot governor.

Optimism? Arizona is talking about determining who gets care, we hit 50k new cases a day and people are focusing on when sports start instead of why we're the country where this thing is on fire....sure...optimism.

lies, sunlight and heat kill Covid. It should magically disappear in AZ soon.

The state is testing EVERY employee at EVERY nursing home in the state once every two weeks right now.

Florida has a LOT of nursing homes, BTW.

Even DeSantis and Scott admitted that the rise in cases is not explained by the rise in testing. That's why they've moved to prisons then migrant workers to kids in bars. Anything other that they screwed up.

128,000? Approximately 8,000 Americans die every day; or 1,460,000 since the first of January.

When are you going to personalize the 92% that DIDN’T die of covid? Can’t believe my uncle had the nerve to die of cancer instead of the Fauci Flu: how selfish can a man get.

Herr Cuomo said it’s NOBODY’S fault: not his, not God, not Donny, not Mother Nature.

Who are you to question Him?

There's obviously community spread. And Florida has a constant parade of visitors to ensure everything gets mixed around.

Peak was about 2250 in mid-April
May 1 : 2000
June 1 : 1000
July 1 : 560

Yes, I know cases are skyrocketing in a few southern states. And they are slightly rising in others - though in many states the rise is easily explained by more testing. But as health officials tells us the rise is primarily among young people, whose mortality rate is about 20x smaller than older people, I think there is at least some room for cautious optimism; at least until the death rate starts to increase.

If we could stop talking about shutting everything down, and focus on wearing face coverings and convincing the minority of folks who are the greatest risk to be extra cautious, it would seem we could control this thing.
Watch the press conferences by NC Gov. Cooper on Facebook. And read the comments. The Trumpkins are NOT going to wear masks, are NOT going to social distance. The states that were heralded by those morans for defying the lockdowns - GA, FL, TX, AZ - all seeing cases go through the roof and putting stress on their health care systems. Meanwhile, Michgan - under Whitmer who was blasted by the right - had fewer than 600 new cases yesterday. AZ and GA - with similar populations - had over 3,300 new cases. Each.

A person would have to be a fvcking idiot to post that and think it meant anything. First, your "mortality rate" is 0.04%. Second, you calculate a mortality rate using the number of deaths divided by the number of infected people - not the total population. Third, would you worry, for example, if your "mortality rate" was 0.6%? Would THAT flip you out?

I agree but I doubt it happens.

I think the media basically forces colleges to send kids home and the economy tanks around October.

I think we get back to normal in 2021 because it will be apparent the cure is worse than the disease. Vaccine or no vaccine.

UGH! JFC!!

WE. DON'T. GET. BACK. TO. NORMAL. UNTIL. THE. VIRUS. IS. UNDER. CONTROL.

How difficult is it to get this? You can't "will" this away, or pretend it goes away if we get sick of it or "the cure is worse than the disease".

The virus has to be brought under control or defeated. Until then we're effed.

We get back to normal whenever we choose. Either the “new normal” for a few years is social distancing - with all of the accompanying ills - or the new normal is 100k a year die of COVID19.

We will decide which.

There is no statistical correlation between lockdowns and case control. California had one of the most stringent lockdowns, and their cases are increasing. Most of the population centers in Texas had serious lockdowns, bit cases are rising. Wisconsin had a court ordered suspension of lockdown a long time ago, and the virus is well under control there.

A Stanford study indicated that cloth facemasks allow small particles to travel at least 5 feet. We have no real evidence that cloth masks help.

I'm not promoting that people shouldn't wear them, but the idea that they are absolutely necessary for this virus is not supported by the evidence.

People are cherry picking data to prove their biases.

We’ve done a great job, a great job. But the numbers are climbing due to an increase in young immigrant convicts gathering at bars. No masks or social distancing.

This is an article printed a few days ago written by a epidemiologist who specializes in bat borne viruses where he outlines the lack of evidence that surgical and cloth masks do anything meaningful to stop COVID-19 spread.

Again, I encourage use of cloth masks in indoor situations where physical distance is difficult to maintain. It is unlikely to do any harm and may help. We just don't know for a fact that they do.
