*** #7 Iowa vs #5 Maryland WBB Game Thread ***

Watching some of the games down the closing stretch, and now today ........

it makes me wonder how good some of these women's teams really are. How much of their record is "them" and how much is "favorable officiating".

For instance, the Hawks (likely) beat the pants off MD today if refs don't make it a closer game with all those bad calls.

One thing I'll say watching our rotations in the Zone. We commit to helping, and then stop rotating/recovering too much and that's where we get burned on the extra pass.

The help should come and then they have to either recover when the defender in their original space is good, or someone else needs to rotate to fill the gaps, and there's just too many breakdowns at times and players overcommitting or not recognizing when to rotate/fill in (i.e. late close outs) and that is what leads to these open shots and driving lanes for the opponent.

Hopefully that's something they can continue to look over as the tournament approaches.

Two TOs by Miller no calls were

1, at mid court she dribbles and lets the ball get up to her face height, hand under ball, she does a scoop over and down motion with the ball above her head, puts it down, keeps dribbling she passes for a layin for 2. That’s a carry or double dribble. Either way it’s a turnover. Happened directly in front of a ref, 5-7 feet away staring directly at her. No call.

2, under the hoop late, she is spinning on her established pivot foot, can’t pass it out, take another step, comes off pivot foot to underhand shoot it at the rim, scores. No traveling call.

BS call on Clark late when girl trips in front of her and impedes the offensive players progress in a non defending position. terrible call. 100% blocking foul on the girl who tripped. Clark should be on the line, instead they hand it to Maryland.

Just dogshït crew. Hope they are not back tomorrow.

Caitlin took a pass at half court yesterday turned to face the hoop and switched pivot feet in front of the ref.

It was bad, particularly 3rd & 4th Q they made 90% calls & no calls to favor one team.
That is the difference between dishonest officials and simply inept officials. The latter scatter their mistakes randomly. The former target the bad calls/no calls in primarily one direction.

You almost never notice the best officials during a game. It's kind of shocking when they make a major error.

Bad officials get noticed. Dishonest officials are obvious. Today's officials were dishonest.

Maryland daring McKenna and Gabby to beat them, So far so good!

Holy cow... box score shows Iowa with only 2 more fouls than the turtles. That shocked me. What, did Iowa have 0 fouls in the first half?

Worse than a BS call on Clark on the inbound play, the Maryland defender slapped the ball while it was in Kate Martin's hands out of bounds...so loud you could hear it on tv, and Kate Martin yelled "she just slapped the ball" but there was no call. That happened before the called foul on Clark.
