I spoke with UI baseball ace Brody Brecht today about his recent dominant stretch.

In his last three starts, he has struck out 36 batters(!!!!), allowed just 2 runs and 5 hits.

Brecht tole me the biggest difference in himself between now and just a couple years ago is his mental approach.

We'll have more from Brody tonight at on KCCINews at 6 and 10.

Check this out & Watch:

Brody went 7 innings today at Illinois. He gave up just 3 hits, just 3 walks and just 3 earned runs in Iowa's 10-4 win.

Oh, and 9 more strikeouts, too.

Check this out & watch:

Im still hoping Twins can grab him at #21. Really started to improve at the end of the year specifically the command of the fastball and improving his third pitch the splitter. I don't think we can underestimate how much the pitching coach was effecting performance. Langerberg did very well in 2022, took a step back last year, and this year is doing extremely well with the Twins. He just got promoted the other day.

The Colorado Rockies select power pitcher Brody Brecht 6-4, 235) at No. 38 after the first round. Brecht becomes Iowa’s highest-drafted player since Tim Costo went No. 8 overall in 1990.

Brecht was 4-3 with a 3.33 ERA, 128 Ks and 49 BBs last year. He was 4th nationally in Ks per 9 innings (14.71) and 7th in total strikeouts.

In 3 seasons, Brecht was 10-9 with a 3.49 ERA, 281 Ks and 135 walks. He also played WR for 2 seasons for the football team with 9 catches for 87 yards.

Watched the draft unfold last night . . .

After Brecht wasn't drafted in the first round, I'll admit to having thoughts of "geez, if he drops much further, is there a chance that he comes back to Iowa to try to move up in the '25 draft?" I painfully recall Mark Appel being picked #8 overall by my favorite MLB team (Pirates) and asking for 1-1 money (pretty sure Boras was his agent). When the Bucs didn't pony up 1-1 money, he returned to college. From a purely dollars and cents standpoint, it worked well for him He was the 1-1 pick in the following draft.

Perhaps "Brecht coming back in '25 to increase draft position" involved some wishful thinking on my part after a really disappointing '24 season. (But, seriously, who wants to be a pitcher in Colorado?!)

Slot value at #38 is just under $2.5M. If he could jump to #20, slot is just over $4M. The risks of (a) potential injury; (b) not having a dominating season; and (c) losing significant bargaining power after one's Senior year all point to a relatively easy decision for Brecht - he should start his professional career.

Short of something "weird" happening . . . something revealed in pre-signing medical testing, Brecht will be the latest Iowa pitcher to try to climb his way to the bigs.

I wish him well.

Picking Condon, I don't see anyway the Rockies went underslot to spend more money for Brecht. Maybe they could find a few more dollars from lower picks. Otherwise I think Brecht is pretty much locked into the slot bonus for the pick. Ultimately I don't see him coming back to try to improve at the 2+ million slot. Yes if he had dropped deep into the 2nd round he may have been willing. I still think he has a high probability at succeeding. The only thing that would change that is if he doesn't have a significant drive to succeed.

There are still 3 more pitchers in play for the Hawkeyes. Morgan, Obermueller and Oakie. Should know in the first couple rounds today whether they will be coming back or not. If they get past round 5 should be good for the Hawkeyes on all 3.

MLB.com had a pretty damning assessment of the Iowa coaching staff and their pitching usage in regard to Brecht.

Despite displaying first-round stuff during his summer high school senior season and getting overtures of first-round money from pro teams in 2021, Brecht turned them down because he was set on playing wide receiver at Iowa. He redshirted in football in his first year with the Hawkeyes and played sparingly in his second before deciding to concentrate on baseball last March. He led NCAA Division I with a .143 opponent average in 2023 before getting off to a slow start this spring as scouts complained about how Iowa has messed with his pitches and mechanics. He made some adjustments on his own and finished strong, which should allow him to become the program's first first-rounder since Tim Costo in 1990.

I read that as well. A mock pre-draft also unveiled some not-so-complimentary commentary.

As for the contention that "Iowa messed with his pitches," I'll leave that to others with more knowledge on the issue.

Brecht has MLB velocity.
Brecht has MLB movement.
No doubt about either of the above.

It's always been about harnessing the potential. Hitters at the highest level have an outstanding eye at the plate and will exploit pitchers who have outstanding "stuff" but can't consistently find the K zone. Mazur has experienced that first hand this year during his call-ups. Guys at AAA will chase pitches out of the K zone far more frequently. Brecht can get guys out with pitches in the zone. His velocity and movement allow for that. It's the ability to throw pitches into the zone which will dictate his success going forward.

With the 78th pick, the Rockies just picked a catcher who is the #100 overall prospect (by MLB.com). That's another possibility for below slot signing bonus.
