Alex Thomsen

Long redshirted at Iowa State during the 2008-2009 season (so he graduated HS in 2008) which by my quick count made him 84 pounds following his freshman season, heading into his SO year of HS (05 as a FR, 06 as a SO, 07 as a JR, 08 as a SR, 08-09 @ ISU). Clark graduated in 2012 I believe so he would have been a freshman as well I believe.

Long was small as a FR, but I think he wrestled 112 for his high school season, then cut to 105 for Fargo.

As for Cullan, I think he cuts a little to get to 88, but not a lot. He won AAU state at 90 pounds and wrestled some at 94 (weighed in a full pound under at Northern Plains) this summer. I couldn't tell you his exact weight, but I don' think he is more than 95 pounds.

Andrew got 8th at 103 as a freshman. He weighed about 80 lbs.

I was just screwing around and have no actual knowledge. Others have said there is no way he comes here but now have backed off to saying they could be wrong. Things change and our coaches interest in him could go up or down and vice versa. A lot will depend on Murin and the Young Guns pipeline that is much more important due to the current status of Iowa high school wrestling.
I haven't backed off at all. I'm going to agree with Farmer Fred. Alex isn't going anywhere east of Underwood. Although, there is a school east of Underwood Alex has mentioned, according to Farmer Fred.

I would love for the Hawks to get Alex Thompsen. Every match he's in is exciting to watch and he seems like a good kid. But as many have stated, he doesn't appear to be headed for a college weight class that is a need for the hawks. Obviously weights change, kids de-commit and you can never have too much depth. But with Alex I make two observations:

1) He's good enough to get a full ride and be a 4 year D1 starter
2) He's not as good as Teasdale or Lee.

If it's true that Nebbie is in his future I look forward to future B10 finals against Lee or Teasdale.

Maybe you need to know more about Sebolt before you start saying things like, not panning out.

Should I have called him something like a bust instead? There are countless guys who have been top recruits who don't pan out (bust). I am willing to bet that at some point you yourself have said that a kid is a bust, in that case did you know the full personal life story for the person? I'm not saying that TJ isn't a nice guy or that he is a failure, I talked to him at USA state this year seems to be very happy with what he's doing and has an outstanding club. That doesn't change the fact that as a college wrestler he didn't meet the expectations people had for what he'd do. Now maybe he didn't have those same expectations for himself going into college but that brings up a whole new topic of what makes a recruit a bust. Which really gets us way off topic.

Back to the original topic, I hope Thompsen considers Iowa but if he doesn't feel it's the right fit for him then he needs to go where he feels he will fit.

Never before have I ever said that I thought a kid was a "bust". Didn't meet the "expectations" that people had for him? God forbid that you don't live up to what others want you to be. Frick that crap. Did TJ tell you about the injuries during his red shirt year? When I think of "bust" I think of a woman and when I think of "stud' I think of a horse. Your post is good because your not going beserk and saying meaningless crap. Your voicing your opinion.

Regarding the bolded part, not at Iowa imo. Iowa is a premier school, and many of the Alex Thomsen's of the world will take a discount to wrestle at a school like that unless several of those top schools are after you. I think we'd be surprised by how few wrestlers get a 4 year full ride anywhere. Now a Fresno State trying to restart wrestling may take a flyer at a wrestler like Alex to jump start the program, but established, high end programs don't have to do that to land kids.

I wish him the best, wherever he ends up. He's an exciting and obviously very skilled young wrestler.

I am not going to add anything to the bust or not bust conversation, but TJ was a beast in high school. And a very versatile beast at that. Sometimes really dominant kids wrestling in smaller classes can stick to a few moves and get it done, but he didn't rely on one or two moves. Hence, I can see why he has become a successful coach.

We didn't discuss what happened to him. and yes I agree with you what I think of him or you or anyone means nothing. The only person we need to impress in life is ourselves and if we can look in the mirror and say I gave it my best and really mean it that's all we need to be. However others will have an opinion, people have them of me, I'm sure some would say I wasted my god given talent does that make me a bust, sure it does to them but like you said does that matter? Was TJ a wrestler who never hit his full potential, based on recruiting rankings and things of that nature yeah probably, does that mean he's any less of a person or coach? not at all. I think we pry agree more on the underlying topic of this discussion which is does it matter what you, me or anyone else thinks of a person or what they've accomplished. And no it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. When I made the original comment on TJ I wasn't trying to say that him not hitting expectations was a bad thing was merely using him as an example of someone who as a youth and high school kid was seen as a can't miss prospect and for whatever reason he didn't reach that level.

92 in 8th grade, 119 Fresh, 140 Soph-Senior - 195 when I graduated college and that wasn't the fat out of shape 195lbs I am now :). Funny how 195 when your 22 and 195 when your 40 can look drastically different.
Butch you and I have been on very similar weight paths. I was a bit heavier than you in 8th grade. I weighed about 110. I unsuccessfully attempted to cut down to 119 my freshman year. Wrestled 125. Sophmore through senior identical to you and I weighed in today at 193 1/2. I was 203 about 3 1/2 months ago, but have been working my ass off to get into Hawaii shape! I still have an expired Driver's License that lists me at 195 as of 08/09/05 and I'm turning 40 next month. My high school wrestling coach told me what a lot of wrestling coaches tell their athletes as it turns out. Wrestling practice might be the hardest thing you will ever do in your life, but after you've done it, other difficult things become easier. Definitely helps instill the work ethic, determination, pride and fire.

Sebolt kids cut plenty of weight....everyone knows that.....look at Cullans twin brother for example

SoCal - I did the wrestler cut at the beginning of the year for a work weight contest. Let's just say I won. However, many of you can probably relate to this. I started at 213, finished at 182. However, the 182 was really a dehydrated 190 so I weighed 191 by lunch time. People in my office (no longer live in Iowa so not many wrestler types around here) couldn't figure out what the hell I was doing. They actually thought I cheated somehow.

I guess I am not the only one who has used my wrestling background to my advantage. I probably had similar weights in my company's contest except I would gain about 10 lbs by drinking fluids the day of the weigh-in. So I probably lost 10 lbs the first and last week of competition and 20 the over the rest of the time.
