As of today, the late Roy Marble, 2,116 points - Luka Garza, 1861. That’s a difference of 255 points. We have 14 games left. Regular season only, and God willing, no games getting cancelled. That means Luka has to average 18.2 points a game to catch up with Roy. And of course, there’s post season, hopefully. I don’t know about anyone else, but as someone who’s been watching the Hawks for the last 50+ years, this excites me beyond description, winning a Big Ten title, omg, getting to Final 4, I’ll be tap dancing on the streets (ok, maybe not, my knees and back wouldn’t comply), winning a national championship, and I’ll move back to Iowa City despite hating the weather. Here’s to all these history making moments we may be enjoying this season while some fans are navel gazing, without any coaching experience or having watched these kids play anywhere except on TV, which one of them should get more minutes!
Cheer the Hawks.
Enjoy the season.
We haven’t had and won’t have too many shots at history like this anytime soon again!
Oh, I’m so sorry I didn’t read every thread on this forum and violated your copyright on this topic. I’ll delete mine. And to be fair, I’ll donate the proceeds from my post to a charity.Wow. Did not know any of that!
And there are 16 reg season games left, not 14

No, it didn’t. And so what? Do you have a monopoly on this topic? Grow up.I thought the thread title might have stood out to you
And as you can see, we have been doing a countdown since Nov 25

i really thought he had a chance to break the record. oh well. i will still take a B1G title & national championshipNot sure if this is covered elsewhere but JBO is now in 9th place for made 3P. in the Big Ten. He's making 2.4 per game and with 16 games left, he would add 38 more 3P and finish with 348 made and be in 2nd place.

Well if he takes a 6th year...i really thought he had a chance to break the record. oh well. i will still take a B1G title & national championship
256 divided by 16 equals 16 points per game. Sorry, I thought we were still talking about Luka.i really thought he had a chance to break the record. oh well. i will still take a B1G title & national championship
Vallholl above was discussing JBo's scoring (he's currently 18th on the Iowa All Time List, of course) & how he is also in 9th place for made 3 pointers in the Big Ten.256 divided by 16 equals 16 points per game. Sorry, I thought we were still talking about Luka.
JBo still does have a solid chance. His 3pt made per game has been insane the past 4 games or so, much higher than his season average. It's doubtful he'll keep that pace up but he will average more 3's per game than he did the first month of the season. If Iowa doesn't have games/BT tournament cancelled, and they go somewhat deep in both tournaments, then he would only need to average around 3 per game (I did some quick math) to break the all time Big Ten record. A lot has to go right, but it would not be a crazy possibility.i really thought he had a chance to break the record. oh well. i will still take a B1G title & national championship
@perryhawk @Suterman @Ronman & others, do you remember John Johnson playing for the Hawks? Check out Scott's tweet at the end. Crazy how good John was in his short 2 years (and just 49 games!) in Iowa City.
John Johnson...1,172 (2 yrs: 1969-1970, 49 GP, .543 FG%,, 23.9 ppg)
Luka Garza...1,918 (4 yrs: 2018-2021, 109 GP, .556 FG%, 17.6 ppg; 98 three pt goals)
I loved John Johnson. He was terrific, a prolific scorer, and had the flattest jump shot I can ever remember.@perryhawk @Suterman @Ronman & others, do you remember John Johnson playing for the Hawks? and he was part of the 1970 team that went 14-0 n conference play, correct?I loved John Johnson. He was terrific, a prolific scorer, and had the flattest jump shot I can ever remember.
and no 3 point line or shot clockHe was before my time.......but those are astounding numbers for 2 years...with a high FG percentage.
That is correct. I believe he still has the 2 highest scoring games in Iowa history. Both in the 40's. Luka may do that again this year.and he was part of the 1970 team that went 14-0 n conference play, correct?
Yes, he and downtown Freddy lighting it up from outside.......averaged over 100pts per game in the BIg that year...and he was part of the 1970 team that went 14-0 n conference play, correct?

The answer to that, I think, is about 10 years later the 4 corners stall tactic was invented. You had some half time scores of 6-4, 10-7, 13-11 etc. Not long after that development the shot clock came about and not too soon.I can only imagine what John Johnson's and Freddy Brown's scoring averages might have been had there been a 3 point shot & a shot clock.
with no shot clock back then, did opponents ever attempt to stall to keep the score down?
Dean Smith was famous for it but I remember Bobby Knight getting a lead and stalling, too. As an Iowa fan, you simply feared to get behind because it not only was boring to watch, you pretty much knew the outcome. The answer to that, I think, is about 10 years later the 4 corners stall tactic was invented. You're right. Over the last 4 games, JBo is averaging close to FIVE 3 pointers per game. Hopefully we will get all 14 remaining reg season games in. And it sounds like there will be a Big 10 Tournament, which is hopefully 2 or 3 more games.JBo still does have a solid chance. His 3pt made per game has been insane the past 4 games or so, much higher than his season average. correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Aaron White has played in more games than anyone in program history (140).Can't McCaffery see how badly Bohannon is hurting this team?
