Angelo Ferrari interview

If the past is any indication, yes they would wrestle. Tom has not kept these matches from happening in the past tournaments (Midlands and SS).
If the Lee vs. Ayala match is any indication, I think they let the wrestlers decide. If they both really want it, they get it.

Didn’t Lee pretty much say, “You got what you asked for!”?

In the video it looked like Lee was saying “he wanted it”

I thought this board had a consensus that they let the best guy wrestle and don't worry about 2-3 years down the road?

Get those matchups at 174/184 and the loser sits!
TnT don't know if they can match having Parco/Teemer/Buchanan level replacements next year.
Make the serious run in March.

Yes, but it isn't absolute. If PK beats NB or vice versa then go with the winner. If AF beats GA in a very close match, I don't think you pull the shirt for negligible points if any difference. You burn 1 year for each guy then. Who knows though, maybe AF wants to go or doesn't want to go and that should factor in as well. Now if AF beats Gabe by a couple takedowns (I doubt it) then that changes my position, but still might not matter if he wants to RS. The reality is we are all just armchair coaches and our opinions don't mean crap. Just enjoy the matches and it will be what it will be.

I think the Southern Scuffle will have better competition. I think his best comp at Soldier Salute is Gabe and that's assuming Gabe don't compete for 74 there. Southern Scuffle is on Jan 4th and 5th so it could be possible to do both.
I can't find anything that shows which teams will be at the Scuffle this year, do you know who's coming?

If in fact they do wrestle, no matter who wins it will certainly fuel the fire of wishing we could have both in the lineup instead of a different “Brand”. Speaking of which a potential PK vs Nelson matchup at the Salute should be intriguing as well. A clash of styles if I’ve ever seen one.

I am certainly pulling for him; however, we won't know much about his character until he loses a match. Everyone can be "a good kid" when things are going smoothly.
True, but he's giving me good kid vibes. He handled that interview pretty well. I know Wayne and Zach are bad guys pretty big fan of a sport and they don't want to contentious interview, putting in like make any mistakes in it in my opinion.

He will be OK.

If Gabe and Angelo make the SS finals would they still wrestle? Flo said last week they don’t expect them to wrestle the match if they both make it.
I didn't realize that's how somebody's torments work but I did see that at a recent tournament that Penn State competed in. When it was Penn State versus Penn State they didn't wrestle the match. And it makes sense so you don't risk an injury. The guys can settle the starter issue in the practice room,

Minnesota did it as well last year at the soldier salute. Salazar and McNelly both forfeited.

With the impending transfer from Iowa to Rutgers, as discussed a few weeks ago, let the best guy wrestle.

With donor $$$ filling in the gaps, don't worry about burning redshirt unless a specific wrestler wants it.

Penn State wrestled the matches that were considered "live wrestle-offs" (i.e. Barr vs Cochran and Kasak vs Facundo) and abandoned the others. If the Brands are using a potential PK vs Nelson or Gabe vs Angelo match as a live wrestle-off in the same way, then they will go. That Black Knight tournament was more like a PSU exhibition anyway. The SS tournament looks to have a real field if the teams show up with at least an A- lineup, so it would definitely mean for a guy to win it.

I thought that as well. But then he was wrestling at 184 the next match.

Even if Angelo would win that match, I think he will still redshirt. Angelo himself would likely be happy with a shirt year, it is an extra year of NIL money for these athletes that shirt. Or so in my limited knowledge is what I think, unless their contracted a total no matter the number of years.

Wonder what he weighed in at for Princeton/Army. He did not really look him self against Army wrestler.

Only in finals when the two wrestlers were competing for the starting spot. There were several shared titles in the Black Knight Open, wherever the outcome wasn't going to affect who starts.

Part of the reasoning given by Cael was that 'The Dresser Rule' doesn't count matches between teammates towards the NCAA championship qualifying criteria.

That’s not true either, it took me 15 seconds of research to find Gary Steen wrestling Robert Howard in the 2023 black knight quarterfinals.

The intent of what I wrote is "only in the finals" do they not wrestle unless it's for a starting spot. It was based on your assertion that Cael routinely has his guys wrestle. I was saying he also routinely does not these days.

Plenty wrestled against one another in Black Knight before the finals this year, when not competing for a starting spot (e.g. firmly planned red shirts).

Lastly, in 2023 the starting 125 spot was still open at the Black Knight. Davis could've red shirted.

Being that the SS is Iowa's tournament, I can't easily see them wrestling each other to grow the tournament and attract attendance. If Iowa is the main program in the tournament and forfeiting finals or semi matches, it won't be long before nobody is in the stands

Very good point. I don’t see a semifinal match up as an issue.

Of course we seem to be assuming the Iowa wrestlers of interest are on opposite halves of the bracket when it comes to the finals. Depending on how seeding is done, it seems easy enough to ensure all Iowa wrestlers are on the same half of the bracket. That seems a simple solution.

Regardless, I expect Iowa wrestlers would meet in the finals when they are seen as vying for a team starting position come the B1G tournament, from TnT's perspective.

My bottom line on any Ferrari vs Arnold match up:

1) In the winners bracket but before finals, they will face off, because remaining matches would be needed for NCAA qualifying, regardless of future starter.

2) In the finals, if they don't face off, that means Ferrari redshirt (barring any future injury and Medical RS for Gabe). No benefit to Iowa to have them wrestle.

3) In the finals, if they do face off, that means Ferrari would be coming out of redshirt, should he win by any margin. This means they are vying for this year's starting spot.

4) However unlikely, if in the consolation bracket, they won't face off. Neither making finals of this tournament means potential NCAA point difference is too small to pull Ferrari redshirt. Ferrari would forfeit to Arnold and stay in redshirt. No benefit to Iowa to have them wrestle.

To me, FRL asserting they won't face off in the finals is as much an expression of their belief Ferrari will stay in redshirt, as it is anything else. They know, by 'The Dresser Rule,' matches between teammates won't count towards NCAA qualification criteria. So they don't see any benefit to Iowa to have them wrestle.

Yeah, last year's Journeyman & Black Knight were the live wrestle off for 125 for Penn State. Going in, it was assumed/hoped that Robbie Howard would win and be able to fulfill at least some of his potential, and they were also giving Gary Steen a chance to improve and win the starting spot he was forced into the previous season when Howard was injured. Davis wasn't viewed as a blue chip recruit and was ticketed for redshirt.

Of course, that's not how it played out. Howard's shoulder never responded to a point where he could be effective, and he lost in the Journeyman before even facing either PSU guy then Davis majored Steen in the finals. In the Black Knight, Howard edged out Steen early in the tournament but eventually MFF'd out and retired from competition, and Davis's shirt was pulled and the rest is history.

Just watched the interview. Angelo seems so levelheaded, I don’t expect implosion after a loss, just intent to improve. He clearly enjoys the total Hawk environment (coaches, teammates, facility, fan support) more than the personal spotlight AJ craves. You got the brother with the “team first” mentality, a critical difference between the sibs. And redshirt or not, gotta believe he’ll be irritating us Lions solely as a Hawk for the next 4-5 years. Selfishly wanting both bouts, I’d like to see Angelo v Carter on Jan 31, then Gabe v Carter at B1G tens. In Star’s last year, it’d be too cool—and great experience—to see both young bucks battle the old bull.

He has always seemed much more reserved than AJ and Anthony. May actually be the most athletic and talented wrestler of all of them. Says he’s getting all A’s and B’s so grades are not a problem. He managed to stay out of trouble in high school, so hopefully that trend also continues. Too many people wanted to not like him because of his last name. I agree would love to see Star wrestle both our young up and comes this season, it would be a great experience for Gabe and Angelo even if they lose.

No doubt about it now after watching that interview. This kid has some moxy. Seems like he's got his mind in a great place. He's got the good cocky. I hope we get to see him vs Gabe and then vs Starocci later.
