Anthony Knox recruitment day

It bothers me if true. Especially if the staff know the kid wants to be coached by Terry.

My guess is that either it isn’t true, or the coaching staff didn’t know the kid was open to the idea of competing in IC. I can’t fathom the idea of Hawk staff knowing a top shelf recruit has interest and not making more of an effort.
I can't imagine not pitching all top level recruits wether they have shown interest or not. We had this convo once though. 🤣

I like our guys and if I was a top recruit or the parent of, I would understand that getting a phone call on the first day of recruiting is not what matters.

What matters is how much those coaches will put in to make my kid a successful student athlete and give them the proper guidance that would make me comfortable saying “Im at ease knowing the Brands brothers are at the helm of our ship”

Lets imagine this recruit has interest. Are we to believe he (Knox) crosses IOWA off his list because TnT did not reach out to him first and at midnight!

If Bobby spoke with him and said Iowa is interested and the coaches will talk to you further. Maybe leave in the recruits hands and say here is their private numbers, well I may be even more impressed and I would think a top athlete leaves those doors open until they are shut completely. JMHO
There’s a reason why Tom drove through the night to talk with Kemerer in person instead of a phone call.
How you deliver the message matters.

Hard to imagine a top recruit who REALLY wants to be coached by Terry not getting more than a courtesy call…

I watched the podcast of this story and always wondered why he didn't just fly and rent a car once he landed. The Pittsburgh airport is 37 miles from Murrysville so it made no sense to drive from Iowa. Oh, the podcast I listened to was Tom stating he drove through the night to recruit Spencer, but I suppose he could have done the same with Kem.

tom's willingness to go above and beyond for recruits he really really wants (spencer, kem) is well known

he'll do it when he wants to...
That doesn't appear to be working very well. We are getting our ass kicked by Cael.
If "he will do it when he wants to" is true. He needs to go.

I remember Tom's initial press conference at Iowa where he said helping kids get better was the most important thing in wrestling. You could tell from his personality and all of the interviews he has done since being an athlete and a coach that winning championships is really not important to him and Terry.

If you think winning championships is important to him and his brother you don't really understand them. He was tutored under Gable who was most focused on athletic and personal development over winning.

I bet you a Ferrari you’re wrong.

Iowa has been such a dominant force in wrestling in the past. Add the largest fan base in the nation, I would have thought it would REALLY be at an advantage in recruiting top talent. It has surprised me how few top kids have ended up in IC in the last ten years.

No sense dwelling on the past, but I’m genuinely interested in knowing how many and which elite athletes didn’t come to IC due to lack of interest shown by staff.
Things like history and a large fan base mean less and less as time goes on. I’ve seen PSU and Notre Dame talk about that in recent years to maybe 20 years ago. It’s more what’s going on right now that seems to matter to recruits.

That was not on the first day of recruitment and I for one like the way our coaches send the message. They would go to war with our guys they would climb mountains for them and at the end of the day that is what matters.

Do your research recruits and go where you will not be left behind no matter what, or don't. I and many others will stand with integrity and traditions of doing what counts the most! GO HAWKS.

I guess it would make sense to replace TnT with someone who has never won a championship in the past 40 years and finishes behind them every year. Or they could go with an unproven guy, because winning championships are easy. Almost every coach has won a couple. (that was sarcasm - just in case it did not come across that way)

Saying you want to win titles is one thing. Saying you should fire the coach because they are not winning at the rate you want is another thing. Let's remember - there is no team that is even close to the Hawks other than PSU. If you think there is some magic formula to winning at Iowa and someone else knows it but TnT can't figure it out - you are kidding yourself. PSU is the giant right now. The Hawks are doing what they can to chop them down to size. No-one else is even close to doing that.

Well, how about…. They have keys to a Lamborghini and need to stop putting regular fuel in the tank when offered premium. Lol (even if offered free Casey’s pizza with each tank of regs..)

I said, if his attitude is " I'll do it when I want to" is true, he needs to go.
When you are green you grow , when you are ripe you rot.
Coaches can get burned out and lose their fire just like anyone.

It's probably more along the lines of, "He'll do it when he thinks it is the best time."

I guess I really don't get it, although I'm not a coach. How hard is it to spend 5 or 10 minutes and make a phone call? Maybe for top 10 recruits? You can do that in a matter of an hour or two. I would think it's time we'll spent.

I caught that after I posted but decided to leave my post up, just because I think a lot of people think it is easy to be a consistent winning D1 coach. So many things and factors come into play and right now the recruiting ball is in PSU's court. Firing TnT will not change that. I think they are doing an amazing job and they would be best served by being supported rather than having their resignations asked for.
PS... I love the green /grow - ripe/rot quote. I am going to have to use that sometime. Thanks
