Any update on the Sammys?

Was it the year St John won or the year he got 2nd to Dake when he looked like he was functioning at about 20% against Oregon State a few weeks before Big Tens.

Yes, he did and I was there. Not sure if it was 7th or 5th but think he went overtime to defeat Reader from ISU.
I just remember that he'd get a leg and the other guy would crush his hips and Morningstar would gradually enforce his will and slowly pull the leg in. It took about 1:15 to do, so the drama built.

It was 2012 when St. John had his bad knee injury. A week or two prior to B1Gs he got majored by Roger Pena 9-1. Then come Big Tens he beat Green 6-4 in OT after giving up a feet to back double in the 1st if i recall correctly. Then beat Dylan Alton 3-1 in OT in the semis, and Beat Welch in the finals, was down 3-2 with like 20 seconds left and got in a clutch shot and scramble to finish for the win 4-3. Then went on a run to the finals and ran into Dake. Heart of a lion. Hope Brooks and Stoll are able to go on some big runs at NCAA's even with their injuries.

For some reason I get the feeling "He'll be entered in the tournament." means that he'll weigh in but default out and get a wild card. Hope I'm wrong and he's healthy enough to go and take 3rd behind Snyder and Coon.

When asked how Stoll was doing in his presser, Tom said, "He's doing well and he'll be entered in the tournament. . . ." -- followed by that grin he usually flashes when he and the media both know he's withholding info. Reading between the lines, I think Tom was saying that Stoll will be entered and do the bare minimum necessary to qualify for Nationals.

You know, I was really thinking PSU was getting a tough break with Nevills' injury this year. Then, at the last second, the AIWHG stepped in and took out Stoll to level the playing field. Knew it was too good to be true.

From Todd Connor's interview:
What can you tell us about Sam Stoll at Heavyweight who was injured against North Carolina State..

Tom Brands: He’ll be entered. We’ll be basically one match at a time there as well. The injury is a significant injury. Significant injuries happen. Frame of mind dictates how you come back a lot. Our frame of mind is good, his frame of mind is good. We have a great plan. Wrestling is not really a sport where it’s high speed and explosive cutting. The explosiveness is penetration and getting underneath guys and then popping them up in the air to the moon. That might be a little uncomfortable doing those things with his injury but it’s not undoable. He’s embraced that, and that’s good.

Sounds like an ACL from his comments.

Agreed. Also sounds like Stoll will give the first match a go. But my gut says Big Sam is only going to wrestle 1 match this weekend, win or lose. A lot of points are being lost at HWT, esp when a healthy Sam likely could have gotten us a pin 1st round too.

I wonder how bad a torn ACL is for any upperbody Greco stuff?

Injury defaults shouldn't affect him getting a wild card(at-large bid), but it will DESTROY his chances of a good seed, and possibly, being seeded at all.

I'm no doctor, but . . . if SS has a torn ACL, can you really put him out on the mat against another hwt? What's holding the knee together? The torque and pressure that another heavy will put on Sammy's body will be enormous.

Ideally here's how I'd like to see it play out.

Stoll wrestles and wins his first two matches against guys he could possibly bonus which would be huge for the team points. We send him out there to wrestle Snyder, to keep it to a decision. Snyder has NEVER pinned a guy in college. If we forfeit that match they get 6 instead of 3 if Stoll can go.

Stoll drops to backside and would probably get matched up against a Kroells or Smith. This is where he bows out of the tournament so he doesn't risk further injury / seeding for the big dance.

Thoughts?

This makes me very nervous. Any further damage could ruin his next year, if he has to have surgery. Maybe he will have surgery anyway........

That is what sucks is surgery recovery is not optimal condition for making off season progress.

I don't think he would be wrestling if anything was torn. That would be pretty irresponsible by the doctors, trainers, coaches, university, and the athlete. JMO.

He won the championship the year he was hurt earlier in the season, if i remember correctly...

I had a player playing on torn meniscus all season long against our advice last fall - but it was his decision to continue playing. He had a surgery after the season in December and is already doing light workouts after his rehab. It all depends on a type of injury and athlete's pain tolerance and willingness to go through it...

Toms' talk of explosiveness and cutting most likely means it is an ACL. I torn an ACL. If it's an ACL he will be greatly limited. And with some people they can barely do anything. It depends on the individual. Very few people have the tenacity of a Dan Gable who can tear such and then perform in a couple weeks. But if it's his left ACL any sort of fast push off that goes off to the right, or is trying to stop from being pushed back to the left means the knee could go out of joint.

I went years before getting mine fixed. It went out at those times I described. Fortunately for me I never did have meniscus damage.

Isn't tournament scoring more like 1 for champ round advancement plus 2 for a forfeit?

If it's an ACL, no way is he wrestling, especially at that weight. Probably a torn MCL. I believe that was the same finish Gwiz hurt Jensen with. No offense to Gwiz, a legal finish, but still, dangerous.

If only we had a stable of other state champion heavyweights on the football team. Are there minimum match requirements for being eligible to compete at the B1G tournament? I know this isn't realistic before anyone tears down the idea of it.
Ask Penn State how well this worked out. A hint: It didn't.
