Anyone get any birds today?

Looks like we might see our first measurable snow on Friday night/Saturday morning! Anyone planning to head out? I'm debating between chasing birds or sitting in a deer blind, but I think birds might take the upper hand. If we were in a blind, I'd still need to get my daughter a deer tag, as I typically hunt late muzzleloader. We also don't have a lot of time during 2nd season to hunt, so she just might hunt late muzzy with me.

I don't know......tough to beat that first snow for bird hunting......just seems to make the birds sit tighter and its just beautiful as all get out.

My vote for you would be bird hunting.

(I am going to try and do the same, but probably won't be able to until Sunday morning due to youth basketball tournament on Saturday)

This! Nothing beats roosters in fresh snow.

Yeah, bird hunting is getting the nod. I've got a youth basketball tournament Saturday afternoon, and my Sunday is pretty booked up. So, we'll charge the collar and remote, find the warm clothes, and see how pissed off my shooting makes me dog this weekend!

I'm glad I'm not an Indian. I would have starved to death a long time ago. 4 gimmies and I ****ing missed every single one. 😒
Worked with a guy that had a dog that would sneak up behind you and nip the back of your leg if you missed a bird he flushed.
Another worker who hunted with him verified it. I never took him up to hunt with him.

Got our deer in one hour. 4 guys 4 bucks. Unbelievable. One push through the first spot and we're done. I got a spike with one antler broken off. My son got a nice 10 point. Kinda sad it's over already but man what a morning.
Congrats. Wished I had seen any. Sent a lot of hrs sitting and waiting
grandson got one so that makes me Happy.

From what I heard I was not expecting it. We have some private land that we push and the deer acted like they hadn't been hunted at all. They must have just been hanging out on this land all first season. They were not skittish at all and came out of the valleys walking real slow like they were taking a stroll through the park.

Now I have 3 more days off work with nothing to do. Lol it was damn near a miracle morning

Walked a few miles yesterday for my finale. Saw one hen and one rooster a half mile away. Ended up with two for the year which is two more than last year.

Also had the opportunity to make them in to Pheasant Ala King and share it with my son, fil, bil and the guy who owns the property that I got the birds from. It was an awesome night (except for the vikings score) and everyone loved the food.

Didn’t get anything on my last day out before leaving last month. Walked one of our 80 acres with my son and that was better than anything I could have asked for I need a bigger safe for the place in Iowa but it beats hauling firearms between two different states.

Decent day on the ice yesterday. We slammed 16 gills/pickles in like an hour and a half.

That is a cold boring way to collect 2 pounds of meat. Ice fishing is one outdoor activity I just don't get.

Is that top pump gun a real wingmaster by chance?

New A5 or lighting?

We're going to Big Stone next weekend to stay two days in an ice castle. I can't wait. That's the way to ice fish, in a warm camper on the ice!

The Franchi AL48 at the bottom is my go to bird gun. It’s at least 20 years old but light af. Same recoil operation as the A5, so I assume the receiver housing would appear to be similar. I have an older Wingmaster 12 gauge that belonged to my grandfather as well.

I've got a Colt semi auto 20ga that is nothing more than a Franchi al48 with Colt's name on it. Love it. Super super light. Kicks like a mule. My go to bird gun as well.

No fish. Spent a shitload of money to rent a sleeper shack for my dad and I on Big Stone for 2 nights. We fished about 26 hours and we saw one single 4 inch perch go by the camera in all that time. We came home a day early.

Worst part is my dad is 80 years old and can barely move. This was to be has last ice fishing trip. He was looking forward to this for 6 months.

Son on his way to Mable Minn to visit GF slowed for 2 does crossing the road when a buck came late and slammed into the door of his truck. Unfortunately, the buck with a broken front leg ran off into the woods to either die or taken by coyotes. Either way it will suffer.
He felt pretty bad about it. He also gets to call the insurance co as his door doesn't latch right now

That's a shame. On our way home yesterday by Marshall there was a dead deer in the road and a smashed up minivan parked on the shoulder. No one was around so it didn't just happen but it still sucked.

Had to get a possum out of my raccoon trap over lunch. I used a log to shield his face so I could get to his leg. He was gassed after a long night but when I went back to check on him he was gone:

Mabel, now that's one small town. 139 going south into Cresco is even worse for deer along with Lanesboro off 52. I incurred $11,500 damage from a buck heading to my place outside of Lanesboro on my way back from my Minneapolis office one night.

I've probably hit about 5 deer in my lifetime, 4 near the Iowa acreage and one in Minnesota. My insurance company probably hates me.

For some reason. I see this thread. I’m reminded of the time Dad and I came across almost a dozen hens frozen at a spot along side the rode. They apparently couldn’t find any better shelter.

Me, being all of 13 at the time thought Hey good eatin. He obviously had the better sense.

Love this thread and I thank you guys for keeping it going. Some of my best memories were the early mornings wtih my dad (R.I.P.) and his buddies, a cooler of beer and getting some birds. Dad had a group of six that went every weekend during season. One person was responsible for lunch each weekend. One guy was famous for braunschweiger and grape jelly sandwiches. The old Luxembourger liked to shoot right out of the passenger window. It was worth just going and listening to them give each other hell.

That's a bummer dude and unfortunately something that can happen with paid trips. Hopefully you guys realized 99% of being up there is the bullshitting and time with someone and enjoyed thst portion. But yea, good money burns fast.

Talked to one of my best friends from high school yesterday that is having the same heart procedure I just had. We have another buddy from high school that is a conservationist in SW Iowa that does an ice fishing trip to North Dakota every year. We are going to turn that into a buddies gig. I am pretty damn pumped about that!

Edit to add Devils Lake, ND.

Enjoy, that's cool when it becomes a tradition.

If you wouldn't mind asking your conservationist a question, I have one.

Do we have a program, similar to CRP, that would pay farmers to put land back into WETLANDS? ( In an effort to better filter our runoff prior to it dumping into a river) I know there was a project where they were looking at building sand filters next to waterways but selfishly I'd like to go this way due to the duck habitat created.
