Anyone get any birds today?

I'm trying to sneak an afternoon hunt 😄 shoot straight. Where are you at (N/S) roughly, as far as starting to see migration? Central Iowa still seems dry but my buddy is up by the MN/IA border and has said the last 3 days have been a really nice push.
SE Iowa, hunting Hawkeye WA. Yesterday was weird. Felt like we should have had a push Thursday. birds but it never really happened. Scratched out 3 mallards, saw some migrators working the big water, but I think we lost more birds than we gained Weds/Thurs.

Unfortunately I agree. Thr push was tues/Wed. I took the long way home after dropping my daughter off at daycare and there was NOTHING on the lakes around me. Maybe 20 geese on one lake.

I should be deer hunting right now but...... work...

My youngest went out with a buddy this morning to a hole that's been super productive and they got skunked. They got crowded in on by 2 other groups but no one was doing much shooting regardless.
We did have a new buck pop on tactacam this morning so going to try and get in the stand tonight.
As I told my boys, "we're in the endgame now" ;)

My buddy killed a 184 inch non typical yesterday. Was excited to help him drag it out, he's 63 and got me back into the deer hunting this year, 20 years after I introduced him to it.
I do love the stretch from like the 16th-22nd or so for killing a big old buck. In my experience if you can't get them on an early pattern it's the next best window. I killed a 182" 3 years ago on the 19th after he evaded me all season. He got just dumb enough looking for one last bit of lovin.

Man, anyone else struggling to keep roosters close? I'm beginning to think my dog is a dyke, only finds hens! We could have shot limits the last three times out if we could shoot hens, holding tight as usual. Roosters, not a damn chance. Also, I missed a damn gimmie yesterday that I'm still angry about.

I had the experience in the crp the other day of all hens and a single rooster 50 yards out.

So that’s going to make for a bunch of pheasants next fall is how I have to look at it.

Hitting some ground Friday with family all home that hadn’t been hunted this year yet, so hopefully I get one more chance at some birds this year.

What we hunted yesterday was private ground, leased by my buddy to keep people from hunting deer. 100+ acres of CRP that hasn't been walked all year. Doggo was good, doesn't bump many birds, but she'd get birdy and they'd just run. Frustrating. Had the same thing last weekend, all private ground, and I'm the only one that gets on the majority of it. It's been a battle since opener.

Can't wait to not show up to work on the first snow fall of the year.

I still like to tell myself its the weather....looks like this week it is going to get cold....and then you hope for a little skiff of snow and then the birds will really sit tight.

(or at least that's what I tell myself when I experience the same thing you are discussing here)

Yep, I get it! Hoping this cold spell will bring them into the grass, and maybe hold a bit tighter. Then, when that doesn't work, and I get grumpy, it'll just be a daily forecast check waiting for the snow to fly.

Fellas..I just bought a Browning Citori 4 barrel set, for 805. Did I steal it? Did I mention it is a grade 6
Unless it's a skeet set, and even then it would be a steal just a lot less desirable, you should feel guilty ;). Where'd you find that for so cheap?
Gray or black receiver?

yeah...fvck. It was no reserve auction..thought I just got lucky
If it seems to good to be true...
no money lost...I asked to see a pic of the manual to see if it was the skeet set or just Citori. He was like, no manual. Pretty clear in the pics the manual was there. Then I noticed the pics had a guys white hand...while my boy Raheim, was black and after facebook stalking, loves thug life.

Well, a buddy and I went for a cold walk on Saturday morning. Wunderground said it was a -6 windchill when we started, but it didn't feel too bad after the first unsuccessful walk of the day. We hit one larger piece of CRP next, dog was birdy, but the piece of ground was much too large for 2 guys and one dog, with birds running. Another 0, with 0 shots fired.

With a change in our game plan, we hit a dredge ditch that I've walked successfully once this year. It's a mile down, and a mile back, nice grass with a 1/4 mile of trees lining the dredge. First mile yielded broken ice in the dredge ditch, and a wet pant leg, but we continued. The mile back to the truck was fruitful, a few points by the dog, 2 roosters killed. She bumped one more, and we had one wild flushed bird that we hit and injured that flew onto the dredge bank. Sent the ole mutt down, she locked up on point, and drug the damn thing out of the grass for us. 3 more birds down for the year!

There have been a lot of geese moving in our area, certainly new birds. Feeding areas have drastically changed, larger groups, flying much higher than our local ones. Entertaining to watch, would be more entertaining to be in a layout blind killing the damn things.

And I was just glad I got some redemption Saturday compared to my hunt the week before. It was nice to pull the trigger a few times and fold a few birds.

Had our annual "Feasant Friday" hunt the day after Thanksgiving.....froze our ass off....damn was that wind cold, but we did manage to shoot 7 birds as a group and Mr. OV himself was even 3 for 3 shooting.

Then we partook in some fellowship in the garage with the heater on, 90's country on the AM Radio, Busch Light with home made tomato juice and fried up some of the pheasant and had ourselves a day.

I'm glad I'm not an Indian. I would have starved to death a long time ago. 4 gimmies and I ****ing missed every single one. 😒

What are you calling a gimmie?
Fricken rooster flying up 10 yards from me. The first ones were 3 all together in one spot. They flew one at a time and I missed all 3 one at a time. Lol. Then missed a fourth one an hour later for good measure.

I did get 3.5 miles in and found some new ground that I'm excited to get back to at some point. I do love it. I just wish I was a better shot.
