Are Iowa Players Frustrated With Uthoff's Aggressiveness? - Discussion including GIFs

I agree Uthoff needs to be aggressive and remain aggressive throughout the season for this Iowa team to go places. But just by the physical expressions from Uthoff's teammates, they seem frustrated when Uthoff goes into his iso mode. I've seen Gesell throw up his hands many times when Uthoff does this. Finally, there's video to prove it.

The situation was vs. Purdue at a pivotal point during the game. Iowa, from just being down 19, have made their way back to make this a 3 point game. Uthoff goes into back down mode and you see Dom Uhl (who was hot from 3) visibly upset that Uthoff didn't pass it. He throws up his arms in the air like "what the hell is he doing?" and looks over at Fran like Fran had this talk with Uthoff before.

No not really, I am sure the players get a little upset, but its basketball. They all have to understand their role on the team. Utoff is the straw that stirs the drink, so if that situation arises, I would hope all the players would be okay with him taking the shot. Utoff had a miss-match and had to exploit it. Uhl while I love his game, has been hitting shots from outside, but if were down to Utoff & Uhl shooting, Im picking Utoff 9 out 10 times.

If the players are getting upset, then they are not team players and should not see the floor. If they can't accept a senior leader taking the ball into his own hands and shooting it, well that's a problem and those players need a talking to.

Now if UTOFF was 2-15 shooting, then I could see where the players might have an argument, but Utoff was playing well vs PU. let him do his thing.

big stretch when you say Uhl was visibly upset...bigggggggggggggg stretch. His arms are up (not because he is upset) because that's what you do to anticipate a pass. Would UHL have loved to shoot a wide open 3? Why wouldn't he.

players miss wide open teammates all the time...it happens. I've watched every home game in person (don't need video) and watched every game in Florida.....I love how this team passes the ball and plays very unselfish.

In this video what you apparently fail to see..is your 6'9" leading scorer..backing down a 6'4" purdue guard..I would hope he doesn't pass the ball. In this video had Hammonds stayed with Uthoff .. you may have seen a pass out to the perimeter.

This. The double team never happened. If the double team comes, he kicks it out. If not, he shoots over a smaller defender. Pretty simple really.

If the Hawk players are upset then they are stupid. Uthoff needs to shoot more and not less. When he has had the three big first halves, it wasn't him shooting and missing in the second half that caused the lack of points, it was him not shooting enough.

I don't think it's a big deal but I've noticed 2-3 different times that Uthoff specifically doesn't give the ball up to Uhl when he has a wide open three. Maybe it's just a coincidence that it's been Uhl everytime but none of those situations were "missing" a teammate. I want Uthoff to be as aggressive as possible, so no complaints here.

Uhl usually comes in for Uthoff. The amount of time they spend on the floor together is very limited.

He's shooting 50% and 46% from three. Our offense stinks, visibly when he's not in. I don't care how much he shoots it because I feel like it's going in.

I like Uhl and think he's going to be a huge piece in the next couple of years, and honestly, I think I'd question the attitude of a player who wants to be great if he wasn't a little upset if someone else was being a bit selfish.

That said, Uthoff is the man, needs to understand he's the man, needs to play like he's the man and everyone else needs to know and accept he's the man. There are still times where he occasionally takes a back seat to teammates when he should be the one demanding the ball, he needs to quit doing that. I'm not saying he should take every shot, but he should be the main focus.

It is natural for basketball players to put the ball up and want to ball when they think they are open or that a pass may come. Uhl was open so he put his arms up looking for a pass, it didn't happen. I agree with whoever said that if he was just chucking and not making anything then you would see more frustrated reactions, I don't see that here.

Ridiculous. If Hammonds would have doubled yes...get the ball out, but Uthoff one on one with a back-up, smaller, weak defensive player...all day long baby. I'm pretty sure Uthoff's teammates want him to shoot more and be more aggressive offensively. I think they like winning.

Uthoff is the one guy I want to be selfish.
He should be taking the lion's share of the shots.
Other players might be frustrated in the moment if they think they could score too. That's what offensive minded players do. It comes, and goes, in the moment. It's only a problem if it affects their play as a whole.
I haven't asked any of them personally, but I'll bet most(probably all) of his teammates support what Uthoff has been doing.

Teams that are missing a player that gets "selfish" once in a while, hogs the ball, and swishes a jumpshot over a shorter defender wish they had a guy like Uthoff. He has earned the right, as a senior leader on this team, to do this - especially when the team really needs a bucket. Sometimes, it may seem like he's doing it when it isn't in the flow of the half-court offense, but who cares - he's good enough to make more than he misses.

What drives me much more nuts than the OP's bad theory is when you have 5 guys on the floor that can't create a shot on their own, and the offense isn't producing an open shot just from ball movement alone - such boring, poor basketball.

Just frustrated at missing an open opportunity. Doesn't mean he doesn't like watching Jarrod with his turn around fade away. I could watch that all day.

Original post is nonsense. If anything, Iowa needs Jarrod to shoot more, not less, especially when he is isolated on someone who cannot guard him. Fran would like to see more of this. Nice to see that Uhl has his hands up, ready to receive a pass.

It's how he did it. Everybody on Iowa had their hands up waiting to receive the pass. But you could tell Uhl was visibly frustrated (not upset) that he didn't get the ball there. You don't see Clemmons, Jok, or Gesell throw their hands up in frustration and look at coach once Uthoff shoots it. Like Uhl's physical expression clearly shows what he was feeling at that time Uthoff took the shot.

We all have our "querks" and we all have our personalities. Jarod has a personality all his own. If any teammate can't see that they have blinders on. Quite obvious they aren't wearing blinders. Go Hawks!!!

Go hide for another month.

When he jacks up a quick 25 footer it's human nature to think work the ball, but his range and threat to score gives these guys the a lot of wide open looks that they seem to enjoy.

you're reading too much into it.

seeing something that ain't there.

Uthoff is the team's best player and needs to shoot 20 times a game. Dr Fran's orders.

The guys like to shoot but they also like to win.

4-0 is pretty damn cool.

Do you see dead people too? Honest to God....................

OP when Utoff took and made that 30 footer you could see the guys on our bench were visibly mad because someone else was open.

And, Uhl is probably looking to the bench for instructions for defense. Players do it all the time. Agrees. Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig reach.
