*****Auburn QB Hank Brown COMMITS to IOWA while visiting Dec 12 & 13 (3 Years Eligibility)*****

Our pass blocking was fine. 0 deep passing threat , a terrible QB for most the season, and frequent predictable passing situations contributed to our passing issues. The line wasn’t perfect, but they are far down the list of issues with our passing game.
Iowa only attempted to pass the ball 242 times, they still allowed 15 sacks. That 242 passing attempts is ranked only above the service academies for attempts. I would not say they had great pass protection.

But how many of those times were obvious passing downs, where the defense could pen their ears back and come after the quarterback. You can play man coverage because we didn’t really have a deep threat and our noodle armed quarterback had no chance of completing anything very deep, so the offensive line is already at a huge disadvantage. You can blame the offensive line coach if you want, but I simply just don’t agree. Again there were moments where some guys miss some bad blocks, and that’s going to happen. I’m not saying they were perfect at pass protection. I just think we had bigger issues.

There is no metric that shows this line was great at pass protection. Watching it with my own eyes illustrated that all season. They were better than previous years, for sure, but good, absolutely not. Iowa was tied for 54th for tackles for loss allowed. This stat is even worsened when you look at the number of plays the offense was on the field, tied for 113th. You don't have to agree, the stats speak for themselves. Ever since Morgan walked away, the lines have dropped off.

So, anyone hear how his (Hank Brown's) visit went?
He's here today, along with Kitchen. I'm assuming he commits. I haven't seen/heard he is visiting anywhere else. Kitchen is the target we really want to land, he's been to KU, Wisky, ISU, and will be at Missouri.

If you watched the games you can't possibly say that with a straight face.
I’m exaggerating for effect a bit. There is nothing that has happened at Iowa to suggest he is great coach to jackasses on a message board like you and me.

I did watch all the games. Iowa’s line was good. Not one of the best under Ferentz, but good. Maybe it was a Herculean coaching effort that got them to that point? Maybe they were so unbelievably talented, only Barnett could coach them down to make them just a goodish line?

IMO, I think they played at or above their talent level. So yeah, I think they were probably well coached, but they have warts.

You look like a great coach when your bookends are Tristan Wirfs and Aleric Jackson. Barnett didn’t have those guys. I have yet to hear anyone I would consider qualified suggest Barnett is anything other than a good coach at worst.

Copeland looked like a good coach when he had ISM and Smith. Then he was trash a few years later. I think it had a lot more to do with Brian, and the talent. While not even good, the receivers were better this year with Budmayr than under Copeland last year.

Like everyone else on this board, I bet you don’t think Budmayr had nothing to do with the improvement? Am I right?

I think he had better players and a different scheme, but the fvck if I know? Maybe it was Budmayr? I am at least smart enough to realize him being the connection to Deacon Hill has absolutely nothing to do with his ability to coach. I feel like a unicorn in that observation.

Anyway. The line was as good or better than I’d hoped this year. Maybe my expectations were too low, but I was pleased with their play. Kaleb Johnson didn’t go from co-starter one year, to one of the all-time greats the next season because the line was trash.

Budmayr needs to go.

I don't care what anyone says - The OL pass protection was not good.

There's the 242 attempts. There's the 15 sacks yada yada yada....

I, like most of you, watched pretty much every play of every game with my eyes open, and pass pro was sub-par.
When the other team knows exactly what’s coming, it’s difficult to block. Same is true at any level of football.

Correct, but most teams pass on 3rd down, Iowa had the 73rd ranked sack percentage, 65th in 3rd down conversions. Each team has to deal with those 3rd downs, if you wish to blame it on the play calling, go ahead, but this does not fully excuse the poor blocking.

So, your thoughts on Tim Lester are very negative then? As this implies his play-calling was predictable as was BF's over the years..

I would say there are other metrics to look at in film like how many times does you qb get contacted, your definition of hurried, forced off his spot, etc. Throws into the 4th row of seats!!!

Iowa's third down efficiency has bugged me for decades

Its all these things.
Below average OL play + undersize WR's unable to get open and catch a ball + poor QB talent + predictable, stubborn play calling = worst offense in CFB for two years in a row.
Lester is in year one. Modest improvement has been made. 2 more years will tell.
You need to follow a better team. Sounds like the Hawks are stressing you. Lots of great teams out there winning 9-10+ games a year with near perfect lines and QB play. I'm sure you can find the appropriate blue blood to cheer.

Notre Dame, Oregon?
