Austin, Texas

Roll a spliff at hippie hollow, scope the babes downtown, and drive out to Lexington (45 min) to eat at Snow's BBQ.

Honestly:
-Barton Springs is a cool swimming hole/locale.
-Scholz Beer Garden is a sentimental favorite.
-Bar hopping along 6th used to be a favorite, but since Austin has grown/changed so much, the new place all the cool kids go is Rainey Street. It's a smattering of bars and eateries just south and a bit east of downtown.
-South Congress also has a number of things to eat, see, bars/live music venues that may be worth checking out.

Hope this helps, but maybe an Austin resident can throw you a bone on this one. Have fun!

Hit up the hotties at Lake Travis. Hit up Rainey Street and/or 6th street. Golf at Barton Creek (or Austin CC if you can get on). Float the Guadaloupe in New Braunfels (45 minutes away) or the Frio (which is a couple hours away).

Austin used to be awesome but now it's very much a shell of it's former self.

I too am planning a trip there. Is the south congress area a good part of town to stay in?

Much of what made Austin cool is long gone. The city is too damn crowded.
Salt Lick in Driftwood is the real deal. It’s best to bring a cooler of whatever you’re drinking. Franklin makes great bbq, but as good as it is, it isn’t worth waiting seven hours.
Chuy’s is a real Austin experience. Go to the one on Barton Springs if you can. Shady Grove is good too.
It’s been a long time since I’ve gone, but Casino el Camino on 6th Street had the best burger in town. The place is really a dive bar that caters to the green hair and piercings crowd, but the burgers are done right. They used to cut the fries to order, but I doubt that’s still the case.
Whatever you do, have a Shiner and avoid I-35 if at all possible.

Last time I was there I stayed at the Fairmont, which is just north of Rainey Street. It’s not too far from Congress. It’s a swanky hotel, but the rates weren’t too bad. Has a nice bar and a great pool. Also has self parking below ground level.

Lots of great BBQ to try. Franklin's is most famous, but the wait there can be daunting. Stiles Switch is my go to place, less waiting but still great quality smoked meats.

I always hit up P. Terry's for a burger and a shake when I'm there as well, great local burger place.

Check out the bat "launch" on the Congress St. bridge right around dusk, it's pretty amazing to see. South Congress St. has a bunch of eclectic and cool shops to check out earlier in the day, and good eating options all around you.

We hit some food trucks usually when we're there. There's a place in the 1500 block of S. 1st Street that has amazing ravioli and when we're finished there we walk south about 4 blocks to La Mexicana bakery and fill up on various pastries and their amazing tres leches cake.

Barton Springs pool is a great day of swimming fun, but it's chilly stuff, always a constant 68 degrees. Walking around UT campus is a good way to spend a day as is the LBJ Presidential library, if you're so inclined. Chickensh!t Bingo Sundays at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon is a fun diversion. My wife loves Esther's Follies which is a weird blend of music, politics and humor and 6th Street is always hopping with lots of live music and drinking options, but that's not really my scene.

Unfortunately the Gino's Pizza that was there has closed, they only lasted about two years. Apparently Texans don't like deep dish pizza. Nimrods. If we get pizza in Austin we usually settle for Home Slice, Eastside Pies or Desano if we want a wood fired neapolitan style pie.

Nah, but seriously... It depends on what you like, where you're going to be, etc.

The places I like the best are:

https://www.threadgills.com/

https://countyline.com/lake_austin_tx/ - there are two, I like the location on the lake better.

https://saltlickbbq.com/driftwood/ - gotta go to the original in Driftwood.

There are a ton of restaurants in/around Austin, but those are the one's I look forward to.

I'm going to have to try Salt Lick this summer when I'm down, just to try their All You Can Eat $24.95 deal.

Brisket, sausage, pork ribs, beans, cole slaw and potato salad? I may put them out of business in just one sitting.

It's BYOB and cash only. There is a wine store on the property. They usually have concerts on the weekend. It's the ambiance that special. The property has a canopy of beautiful oak trees, you can sit outside under the oaks, open and bottle of rose or have some shiners and enjoy decent 'que.

My favorite taqueria is Valentina's (outside of Austin). Their egg and brisket (smoked over mesquite) is the best thing. This list of taco places in Austin is legit - https://www.femalefoodie.com/restaurant-reviews/best-tacos-in-austin/

This, then just north of them on the other side of the street is Micklethwaits. Brisket at Franklins and beef ribs at Micklethwaits and you could die happy knowing you ate the best of the best!!!

2nd this. If you don’t want to wait at Franklins, walk over to Micklethwaits. Great outdoor trailer food truck BBQ.

Will do. Saturday 10/19 to Monday, 10/21. It's a work deal, but we have lots of free time. It is one of the trendy hotels, will fill in details later! Mrs. Rann and I work together so you will probably meet her too, sorry you can't bang her while I am there.
