Autism Rates Per Year (ASD)

I value it, I just don't take it as gospel. Especially when it comes to a science that we are really bad at.

The thing is with most mental health conditions is that psychiatrists engage in basically what amounts to educated guessing. And that applies to both diagnosis and treatment.

Medicine in other areas of the body is far more scientific. They can find an infection, test for it, and give anti-bodics and the antibodics work the vast majority of the time. Mental health doesn't work like that. It's much more of a "try this. . . did that make you better? No ok well try this"
You are very ignorant in this subject. Astoundingly so.

So you read it, saw that it was widespread....and decided that it didn't count because....terminology.
Yeah, sounds about on par for you on any LGBTQ issue.

I think 5 named cultures hardly counts as widespread.

And it seems to be important as to if the trans people are counted as a third gender or if they are counted as members of a gender they are attempting to emulate.

You really think a girl wakes up says I'm really a boy and by afternoon their parents have them on hormone blockers? I'm willing to bet they spend more time in therapy before any treatment than your children did before being diagnosed with autism.

@Gimmered would you be willing to share what your child had to go through before being diagnosed and receiving hormone blockers?

I never claimed it was 24 hours. However I highly doubt the process takes years.

I am guessing it likely takes about 6 months because most mental illnesses in the dsm have to have symptoms present for about 6 months.

There is nothing that can be said that is going to convince Hoosier that they are misunderstanding what is going on with the transgender care. But in short, my child was seen in therapy by their counselor as well as their medical doctor, and then nurse practitioner for more than 2 years for their insomnia depression anxiety and mood swings, then added a Psychiatrist who work with the counselor and nurse practitioner to get them on the right meds and get everything balanced out. Once things were somewhat regulated they then saw a MD who specializes in gender dysphoria, who sent them to a second Psychiatrist for evaluation to be certain they felt they met threshold to safely be treated with hormone therapy. At that point, they were able to prescribe testosterone.

We were given full disclosure of the expected effects from use as well as side effects short term and long term as well as what to expect when or if they choose to stop treatment.

From the start of therapy until they were prescribed hormones was probably a 5 year process for them.

I am happy to say, that 2 weeks ago they graduated high school an honor student, are enrolled in College and will start classes this summer. Their ACT composite was a 31 or 32, can't remember, so they will have no problem writing their next chapter. It's great to see them normal again.

Are they attending college outside of Nebraska where they will be considered an adult and able to continue treatment?

Actually, we live a 1/2 block from our local college and they will go there for 2 years. From there they are thinking UNO, Omaha, or Chicago. Some 18 year old's are ready to face the world, others need a bit more time. Besides, they are working part time at our humane society making pretty decent money to play with dogs and cats. Who could leave that?

As far as Nebraska's trans hate bill, they should be able to continue treatment under the bill's amendments. They also would likely have enough testosterone to get them to 19. If not, we'll head to Colorado to finish treatment.

Hang on it sounds like mental health care was started originally for depression, mild swings etc.

How long between actually being seen specifically for Gender Dysphoria and getting hormones?

Also how much therapy was gone through before the pronouns and the name was changed?

Gender Dysphoria was actually early on. This was one of the things the first Psychiatrist talked about early on too. She reminded them that while they would be able to treat the depression and anxiety, they would still need to treat the underlying problem. Really it's like any other medical condition, you need to stabilize the patient first.
So to better answer your question, it was at least 18 months after that visit, maybe longer before they started hormones. It was a very cautious process.

Got a better timeline for you.

6th grade they were really struggling and started counseling. Unknown to me they were likely cutting at this time. If not by then, within a year.

7th grade I knew there was a pattern with there cycle and was asking for birth control to help with that. Starting working with Dr and Nurse Practitioner by then. Knew they were gay.

8th grade came out as Bi, I chuckled and told them they were straight Lesbian, they just had a really cool boyfriend. Started BC, also started using their new name on their art work.

Freshman started using their chosen name with all their teachers. Seeing first Psychiatrist along with Counselor and nurse practitioner. Using them/they, asked all teachers to refer to them as their new name. Was totally non-binary at home, and with most family. Grandmas were left out of discussions at that point.

10th grade, continued all their treatments had mandatory gym class. Girls locker room was no issue, everyone knew they were gay, total support from friends and staff.

Junior year, started testosterone after visit with Dr and Psychiatrist. Still has visits with first Psychiatrist and nurse practitioner as well as checks in with Dysphoria Dr. Counselor has moved and hasn't seen another. Started using guys bathroom at school. Students were never a problem, Staff pretty well the same. Awesome support, but they are an extremely likeable person.

Senior year pretty much maintaining. Gets seem walking out of the guys bathroom by a counselor, gets a compromise from principle and is given access to staff and single use bathrooms. Very respectful to the situation but is under orders from the Superintendent.
After the November elections we had some new board members that we just didn't trust. All the code words for I'm an idiot republican. So a petition was filed in District court for a name change for a minor, remember Nebraska is 19, an in February after all the required legal notices their mom and I took a day off and legally changed their name in district court. This process alone likely took more than 60 days. There was no way, I was going to let some idiot Republican school board member not allow them to be called by their chosen name when the walk across to get their diploma. This is who they are.

They are my child. I sometimes refer to them as my human offspring. If they end up as my son, my daughter, or none of the above, I love them, I support them and if I had the power to change them, I wouldn't change a thing. I am proud of who the are.

Now I know you really have no interest in learning, your mind is made up that these are whimsical rash decisions being made by teenage kids. The only reason you are even asking is to poke holes in our journey. I don't care. I really don't give a flying **** what you think of me or my child. But, there are others here who do care. They care about these kids, some even are interested in learning. Some might open there minds a bit, that's why I started this thread.

Your kid’s story is an awesome one, thanks for sharing it. They are very fortunate to have parents like you and your wife. I’m sad that families like yours are having to go through these current times and all the fear, hatred and anger that’s leveled at you folks. I still don’t get why it’s happening other than the tried and true identity politics game plan brought to us all by the experts in the GOP. Hell will hopefully be swimming with these sanctimonious souls come judgment day.

It takes 2 weeks online.

Some in person clinics will prescribe hormones the same day.

Obviously there is a wide variation in practice. You have your own experience, but that does not mean everyone has the same experience.

I'm glad you are happy about the outcome of you child's care. I hope life continues to be as good as things are now. In my experience, this is just the beginning of your kids journey.

I encourage you to read the study linked below.

For a minor? I call BS.
Some minors are able to get hormones without parental consent (>16 yo), although this is very rare. But this is not the point.

I just gave proof that a person can start hormones within 2 weeks, not the 6 months or multiple years that many think it takes.
There are websites with detailed how to guides on what you need to say to get hormones.

I am VERY well aware of people de-transitioning. There are many reasons for this. If my child comes to that decision, we will approach the process with the same cautious loving support as the transition.

There are no planned surgeries for my child at this point. Very likely non before they are 21 if even that soon. There has be little if any discussion of bottom surgery ever, and top surgery would likely be dependent on a partners input.

In my mind the most likely reason for de-transition is the person has never gotten to the point where they are comfortable with themself as they are, and unable to get comfortable with who they have become.

My point in all of these discussions is it should be a medical discussion with Medical professionals, not some ****ing idiot Republican law maker.

How do you or they know what they really are? (Serious question)

I'm not aware of laws that make it illegal for adults, I have only seen laws that make it more difficult for adults.

I support a law that makes you identify as the opposite sex for a year before hormones, 2 years before top surgery, and 3 years for bottom surgery.

2 weeks till starting hormones could way to short. Some people are very unstable and need to be protected from themselves.

Here's what I get out of this.

A child who was struggling with life has a very supportive Dad who would do anything he can for his kid and within that had to make some tough but deliberate choices in doing what he believed was the best thing for his kid and now he has to hope he made the correct choices.

What else is there? That's how you parent. And every parent at some point goes through this with their kids to varying degrees. Life is hard. All you can do is try your best and heap all the love you have on those who are important to you and hope it comes back.

If not for some HERO Democrat lawmakers in Lincoln, my right to support my child and their medical care would have been ended. This is what the Republicans in Lincoln were trying to put a stop to. I will never lose sight of this and will never forget.

This is exactly what Republican lawmakers in other States have successfully prevented. Generation Z will never forget this.

You believe a lot of stupid crap.

How long and at what age did the gender dysphoria stuff present? Glad they're doing better

I do not support a big brother society. I recognize the risks associated with implementing a law like this.

I believe society has a duty to look out for the well being of the people and I think that the gender identity issue has become too politically driven and the medical community has bought into it. Certain medical providers are being silenced and an open discussion is no longer being had.

In instances like this I support the law stepping in to protect kids. Adults have the ability to do what they want. So I have not bought in to laws to stop adults.

But I do support the medical community changing the standard to wait x amout of time before a person can transition. Gender dysphoria is a fluid diagnosis based on feelings. We know feelings change over time. If the medical community wants to be taken seriously, they will have to develop some standards and some diagnostic criteria related to gender dysphoria.

Again. You read incorrect information. You appear to be a person that has no idea what is real or fake news. It is obvious from the links your post. You also state stuff that is unbelievable. IE you have access to patient charts. Are you a health care provider?

You are awesome.
