Barta: “If we get the NIL Collective done by the summer, we'll be in a good position.”

No. Iowa's collective will be a 501c3 non-profit organization. It takes a bit of time to get that status. The plan is that student-athletes will receive money from the collective and it will be tied to their work with charitable organizations.
Got it, that makes sense.

So, the student athlete's will have to do additional work for pay? I'm not trying to be flippant. I truly don't get it.

Good question. I think it’s more like they will be able to use -- and profit from — their name, image, and likeness. Making appearances, tweeting on behalf of something, lending their name to a cause, etc. I think I used the term “work” above, but that was probably misleading. It’s not like they will be sweeping floors.

Will be interesting to see how the whole NIL thing goes from here. Seems to be some pushback now from coaches, like poor Nick Saban, accusing others of just handing out bags of cash, somewhat ironic LOL. I will admit not knowing much about NIL and what regulations there are, but from some of the debate it seems it wasn't set up to just hand recruits bags of cash. It seems highly unlikely the NCAA will do anything given their history but who knows. I did send my small contribution to the ISU collective. Seems they did put some thought into setting it up so they will be within guidelines if any are actually enforced. But I doubt the clones will be very competitive in the NIL world. Even though there are likely some rich Iowa soybean farmers, they are good conservative Iowans who are hard to separate from a dollar. Hope Iowa gets theirs up and running soon, they should have better donor support than ISU.

The NIL collectives I know about have no interaction with the AD. I'm not sure why Barta is involved?
Thought the same thing when I read the quote...I thought schools were technically not supposed to have anything to do with NIL....not to say it is not happening.

One reg is that the athletes can't be contacted until signed and on campus. We know that's not happening in some cases. So really there are no rules if not being enforced.

I listened to a podcast that some have signed contracts without reading and received a loan that must be paid back.

If you don't think Iowa is behind on NIL, I don't know what to tell you. It's very clear they were unprepared and are now suffering the consequences.

I have a question...you don't have to get the implants to be part of the collective, do you? That may be a deal breaker for some recruits. Hopefully all will be assimilated. After all, resistance is futile.

Lol they have already lost this race there is no catching up.......
They aren't going to run the race that you think they are. Iowa will not be offering funds for recruits to come to Iowa! Iowa has never paid recruits to come to Iowa and they aren't going to start now!

Then might as well give up and just not even play unless they are going to be ok being BOTTOM FEEDERS!

Never is a long time

Once again, Iowa is doing it the right way.

The collective has hired an Executive Director now so they are catching up!

Link to listen to the podcast is in the tweet.

They will have to on the basketball side or be the equivalent of Northwestern for basketball. The guy interviewed on Kakert's podcast said as much. Basketball you are going to have to pay to get good recruits. Period. Football is more developmental so probably can get by giving out NIL money once a player proves they can actually play. Of course, for the top players they are going to want money. Saban is finding this out at Alabama and doesn't like losing guys to A&M.

How is this any different from what has been going on for years? I know, it's "legal" now, but NIL is not supposed to be a recruiting tool. It is supposed to be a way for a player to profit at any school they go to. And if they flame out at a particular school, will the money still roll in? If so, boosters will find themselves with a ton of debt and less money for the AD. That is going to have more of an impact on schools than getting a few more recruits.

Iowa has not been paying for players in the past but many schools have. Now everyone will be using NIL to recruit players so Iowa may need to on the basketball side also. Part of the reason Iowa is so late to the NIL table is that Iowa doesn't have a system in place for paying players like many schools. See Illinois, ISU and Neb for examples.

Yet, that's exactly what it is being used for and to think otherwise is just foolish. Why else would Saban accuse A&M of buying players? It wasn't because they were rewarding the ones already on their roster.

This is correct, but it has to be monitored better. NIL as it stands is still just being used to bypass legal processes. As I said, if a school uses NIL to recruit a player and they bomb out, the NIL collective is still on the hook for the costs. That will break schools that recruit players regardless of personality or emphasis on school. See Nebraska for how well that works.
