Not trying to get into a huge debate here, but did see that Barta will forego his scheduled pay increase so that that money can be used to support the athletic department. At the very least- good PR move, but in light of other programs this IMO was pretty cool for a leader to do.

Great can you use that money he would have received and put it towards that multi million dollar lawsuit Iowa lost last summer.

I believe that was already paid for

Guess then makes up for what he costed the university already. Anyways I’m not going to applaud a guy making what he makes to doing a pay freeze for one year. Let alone the whole, “hey look at me I’m not taking a raise I’m such a great person.”

Maybe have a shred of respect if he did it quietly and told the U to not publicize it.

Should have been easy for him, he hid Fran's BS extension/buyout for nearly two months from the public recently.

To be totally fair, Harreld released the statement, probably in an attempt to improve the fan base’s perception of Barta...

But still, I agree

This didn't come from Barta's sense of philanthropy. Guessing it's the result of a one-on-one conversation with Harreld following the lawsuit, and whatever the department audit has turned up so far.

So they announce this information/decision to the media but kept the extension and raise of Fran quiet all last summer until it was exposed by an eastern Iowa sports reporter late last year?

Gary and Bruce are such humanitarians, keeping Barta’s salary at $1.5 mil a year instead of $1.6 million or whatever it is. Got it. Sorry to be so negative about this announcement. Iowa should now make GB the Iowa representative for the Hero’s game with the decision he has made!

Donating your salary is always good PR. Trump gave his to the vets and now no one can say anything bad about him.

You know, it would be almost worth it for Iowa to get a total asshat like Pollard or Nebraska's D bag so you might realize Barta wasn't so bad. I didn't agree with the Fran extension but that is the way things work in today's environment. Ferentz has earned the right to finish his career here. And any one of you guys would have faced the same result in the Meyer/Griesbaum fiasco. An aggrieved lesbian can write her own paycheck with any jury that would be seated in Iowa City. Who do you HR wizards have for his replacement?

He deserves all the angst based on the Ferentz debacle alone

Have one of your teams win something on a regular basis or give up all your salary.

You mean like football, wrestling, basketball, baseball, women's basketball..... Like one of those teams? I think I need some more specifics from you as to what your definition of regular basis and team is. Want you break that down for us thanks!

Gary is repeatedly chastised by the average fan here. I'd be curious how he's thought of by the donors that matter.

Might not be exactly what he was getting at, but I'd simply ask for a Big Ten championship a little more often than a total of 7 times in the school's 24 sports (3 not counting wrestling) over his 12-year tenure. Or maybe finish higher than double digits in Director's Cup B1G rankings for a change.

If you want to support Gary Barta, you might be able to come up with some good things he has done and provides, but if you want to use overall competitive performance of the various athletic teams, you're not going to have much ammo.

You actually feel that Iowa and their teams do not have an overall competitive performance? And I would love to be in a room where you would survey people and ask them if they know what the Directors Cup is. They wouldn't care.

Good decision for him to make for the duration of his time as AD. Earn some of his salary at least. I'm not going to completely blast him, but neither will I heap praise.

This sounds like a typical hawkeye crowd. I can remember everyone on these boards saying how stupid our last AD was and undeserving he was to be at Iowa. Gee I wonder what's happened to him since he left. National AD of the year at Stanford and now savior of the Big 12. The guy was just to dumb to be Iowa AD.

He’s hated for not taking the raise. And he’d be hated for taking it. Haters gonna hate.

Wrong. The raise is not the issue, it's some of the stupid stuff he's done during his tenure. All though doing it publicly (as opposed to just doing it quietly behind the scenes) does seem cut from the same cloth as the "Win, graduate or do it right?" survey. Validation seeking.

Damn. Tough crowd. Give away cash and get called an asshole for it.

Wrong. He's getting "called an asshole" (though I've never seen anybody use that term in criticizing him) for his previous bad f-ups. Had he said he was foregoing it because he felt the athletic department or he was under performing I think you'd see a very different response. Not only did he not do that...the press release pointed out that wasn't the case.

Surely you guys aren't that blind.
