Truth nobody wants to talk about.Okay fine. But would they fire by far the losingest coach in both school and B1G history?
Here comes the reply… Yeah, but that’s only because he’s been there so long. Yes, and the same can be said of his wins

Thinking that Kirk Ferentz has some kind of super authority to unilaterally “call his shot” on when he will leave Iowa is equally laughable.
What is Gary Barta doing the negotiating? We will name the stadium after you if you leave. That’s ridiculous.
Allowing a guy to stamp his name on the stadium as a condition of his retirement is a “clean break?Everything is negotiable, $$ trumps all, the days of something being sacred has come to an end...
"Kinnick-Ferentz Stadium" has a sweet ring to it for $28M and a clean break for both sides.
I wouldn't equate Ferentz's accomplishments with those of people like Nick Saban, Bobby Bowden, Bear Bryant, and those in that pantheon... and even then, Saban is the only one who ever earned the "when he wants to" consideration.
I do not feel sorry for BG, and I'd bet serious money she's not feeling sorry for herself.Beth inherited the messes with football and men’s basketball. Unfortunately, the only coach we wanted to keep (Bluder) is the one who left on her own terms. Whether or not Iowa has the means to buy out KF and/or Fran after 2025, as a competent business leader (and that’s what AD’s do these days), she has to be exploring options and having discussions.
She doesn’t strike me as someone who is going to want her success tied to guys that refuse to acknowledge changes in their sports. If she does, she will be a short term AD and have trouble getting another P5 job at that level.
Under KF, Iowa football has become a laughing stock of college football offensive futility. Iowa basketball hasn’t seen a Sweet 16 in the long tenure of Fran McCaffery. Recruiting in both sports has been abysmal. Fan support is waning, and it’s going to be worse next year. Fan apathy is directly related to revenue generation, and that can’t go on forever. Instead of thinking about the cost of the buyouts, Beth is going to have to think about the true cost of retaining these guys, in terms of revenue generation, donations to the programs, public perception and student engagement.
Barta put us in this position, but Beth signed up for a big time role and the responsibilities that go with it. She’s going to have to lead through this and make some difficult moves.
Well, most on here feel he's done enough to deserve it...but he would definitely have to be voted into the HoF first, that's a non-negotiable stipulation for having his name on the stadium. That means he'd have to be at 60% wins at the end of this season. Is that still feasible? Does he have to win out?Allowing a guy to stamp his name on the stadium as a condition of his retirement is a “clean break?
Not sure how old you are, but for the record, Hayden era vs Kirk era is not remotely the same. You have no further place to look than our last head football coach in regards to coaches calling their shot, and he didn't have anywhere near the success that KF has had in their last 10 years.
Fry had 2 seasons better than 8-4 in his last decade, with a 3-8, 6-6, 5-7, and 5-6 in there and you think we're firing KF?
Well he does like to wear black.......Would you take Matt Campbell at Iowa
ThisYou feel sorry for an AD at Iowa who makes damn good money? I certainly do not. Let's see her put on the leadership hat that she gets paid for and make some tough decisions.

Iowa football was in the shitter for almost 20 years before Hayden came along and changed the direction of the program. He turned it into a top-shelf program. It was still considered a top-shelf program when Ferentz took over. Sure, there were a couple rough years towards the end of Fry's tenure, but Kirk didn't have to make over a complete ghost town like Hayden did.
Nor will he know when it's time to go...that's the issue.I was alive and well during those years and a season ticket holder...thank you to my father!
The 90's were nowhere near as good as the last decade of Iowa football, we had a 56% win % in HF's last decade, we have a 69% win % the last decade and 71% over the last 5.
The point is, no Iowa FB coach is getting fired with those results. I'm sure a retirement is in the near future, but KF isn't getting fired.
That may be true. I'm glad there wasn't social media during Hayden's last few years. As much as people are unhappy with KF, it was worse in Hayden's last years.Nor will he know when it's time to go...that's the issue.
Thanks for that - I had not known/heard Barbara had her fingerprints on that decision. Kudos to her though. Unfortunately it will be tougher ask to oust FM and/or The Don. I do think if FM can make a tourney run (Dance or NIT), he might step down on his own….🤞I still think the BF firing was more Wilson than Goetz. I think Goetz ended up being the mouth piece, but I think Wilson instigated the move. If you look at Wilson's track record, particularly at Illinois, the BF move seems right up her alley. And frankly, with as new as Beth was to the position, I don't know that she had enough capital built up to be able to make a move of that magnitude on her own.
Hayden's last season was clearly the end. I remember watching him walk off the field at the Metrodome. You could tell he was done. Let's hope KFz doesn't end like that...I think it's starting to trend that way. Next year could be rough. That may be true. I'm glad there wasn't social media during Hayden's last few years. As much as people are unhappy with KF, it was worse in Hayden's last years.
Kinnick, Moon Ferentz. As I stated in another thread, this is how the conversation would need to start:
Beth: "You know coach, some day your statue will be outside Kinnick. Hell, if things go right, it might even be called Kinnick-Ferentz by then."
Kirk: "Awwww, shucks."
Beth: "Wouldn't it be something if you and Mary were still alive when that happened, so you could be there to enjoy it?"
Kirk: "Yeah....wait....what?"
[long pause]
Beth: "Why don't you stop by my office later so we can chat about your future."
So we're clear, I'm not talking about being "fired"...I'm talking about being "retired"...there's a difference. The point is, no Iowa FB coach is getting fired with those results. I'm sure a retirement is in the near future, but KF isn't getting fired.
No. He is not as good as some think.Would you take Matt Campbell at Iowa
Fry was incredible for the Iowa program given where they were. I think his job was much more difficult than KFs in what he achieved. That may be true. I'm glad there wasn't social media during Hayden's last few years. As much as people are unhappy with KF, it was worse in Hayden's last years.

AND even as much as I prefer HF over KF as a coach, it's clear that HF stayed at least one season beyond what he should have.
You just described.....Tim Lester. Absent of course the FCS transfers in bulk. Which would totally work since FCS teams beat the top teams all the time.No thanks.
I haven't seen enough yet to sell me on him. And his HC resume before coming here is not overly compelling.
I'd rather see them try to go the route of bringing in an FCS or DII guy who brings several key players with him via the portal. Especially with a complete overhaul of the offense implementing a mobile, running QB and the attitude that scoring points wins games.
If she didn't see this coming from being the assistant, shame on her.Beth inherited the messes with football and men’s basketball. Absolutely! You feel sorry for an AD at Iowa who makes damn good money? I certainly do not. Let's see her put on the leadership hat that she gets paid for and make some tough decisions.
I think legacy is way overrated. Nobody cares.First year at U of I was Hayden's last year. When I scabbed for ABC Sports when they were on strike....I was essentially in the stadium for the better part 48 hours and was on the sidelines. You could see that Hayden was not healthy. I'm guessing the press corps knew what I saw. It was a different era. 1998 to 2025. Now, Hayden was going through cancer. Kirk is going through a point in his life that he should care about his legacy.
I’d give his name to tunnel and $10 million.Everything is negotiable, $$ trumps all, the days of something being sacred has come to an end...

Ummm, Hayden didn’t get to call his shot. No coach does. The stakeholders at any given time do (whether a good or bad decision by them).Ummm, every hear of Hayden Fry?
Ummm, Hayden didn’t get to call his shot. No coach does. The stakeholders at any given time do (whether a good or bad decision by them).
Unfortunately, in Hayden’s case, I think health played a bigger role.
Indeed he did. But “people” calling for his head is not the same as stakeholders.People were calling for Hayden's head for years and he left on his own term.
I think Fran will resign after this season. His youngest will graduate from High School, and will go play at Butler. Connor is at Butler coaching. Why feel sorry for Beth? She worked under Barta before he retired and knew full well she was the AD in waiting from the University President.
I think she has sat on the sidelines for to long with football, basketball, and wrestling. A good AD would be already replacing one of the head coaches and telling another that their performance is not the standard expected. One or two have earned a smooth exit, but the time has come to move Iowa mens athletics forward with more youthful coaches.
Money for salaries and facilities are there. With Carver being studied for improvements they can easily bring in coaches who want to coach with the new conference realignment. If Beth waits and things slide below where they are now it will be that much harder to get back to average.
Bingo.Indeed he did. But “people” calling for his head is not the same as stakeholders.
That would be stupid. You have no further place to look than our last head football coach in regards to coaches calling their shot, and he didn't have anywhere near the success that KF has had in their last 10 years.

Your memory is off, hardly anyone was calling for Hayden’s head, maybe a few morons.Indeed he did. But “people” calling for his head is not the same as stakeholders.
I'd say hiring the right coaches is right up there, too.Goetz's primary job is to raise money. That is the most important job she can do. Can she coordinate with the NIL fund to give Iowa a $20M football NIL fund. You guys are nuts.
