I feel sorry for Beth Goetz

What is Gary Barta doing the negotiating? We will name the stadium after you if you leave. That’s ridiculous.

Everything is negotiable, $$ trumps all, the days of something being sacred has come to an end...

"Kinnick-Ferentz Stadium" has a sweet ring to it for $28M and a clean break for both sides.

Allowing a guy to stamp his name on the stadium as a condition of his retirement is a “clean break?

I wouldn't equate Ferentz's accomplishments with those of people like Nick Saban, Bobby Bowden, Bear Bryant, and those in that pantheon... and even then, Saban is the only one who ever earned the "when he wants to" consideration.

You have no further place to look than our last head football coach in regards to coaches calling their shot, and he didn't have anywhere near the success that KF has had in their last 10 years.

Fry had 2 seasons better than 8-4 in his last decade, with a 3-8, 6-6, 5-7, and 5-6 in there and you think we're firing KF?

Beth inherited the messes with football and men’s basketball. Unfortunately, the only coach we wanted to keep (Bluder) is the one who left on her own terms. Whether or not Iowa has the means to buy out KF and/or Fran after 2025, as a competent business leader (and that’s what AD’s do these days), she has to be exploring options and having discussions.

She doesn’t strike me as someone who is going to want her success tied to guys that refuse to acknowledge changes in their sports. If she does, she will be a short term AD and have trouble getting another P5 job at that level.

Under KF, Iowa football has become a laughing stock of college football offensive futility. Iowa basketball hasn’t seen a Sweet 16 in the long tenure of Fran McCaffery. Recruiting in both sports has been abysmal. Fan support is waning, and it’s going to be worse next year. Fan apathy is directly related to revenue generation, and that can’t go on forever. Instead of thinking about the cost of the buyouts, Beth is going to have to think about the true cost of retaining these guys, in terms of revenue generation, donations to the programs, public perception and student engagement.

Barta put us in this position, but Beth signed up for a big time role and the responsibilities that go with it. She’s going to have to lead through this and make some difficult moves.
I do not feel sorry for BG, and I'd bet serious money she's not feeling sorry for herself.

She is in the B1G - one of the two conferences that have FU money, meaning she doesn't have to beg for money on the street corner to pay for basic needs. She has a women's BB program that sells out. A wrestling program that has to be among the nations most profitable. The baseball program is in very good hands.

She has a football program that sells out and has averaged just short of 9 wins the last 6 years..

The men's basketball program, despite what fans here think, is not a dumpster fire. They've average 21.5 wins in the last 6 years.

I promise you, her bosses (the President and the BOR) are not wetting their pants over the football or men's basketball programs. Which means she has the freedom to do her job without panic from above.

She does, however, have a challenge in front of her. And that is how to mange the coming exit of two of the most tenured coaches in Iowa history, and then find replacements.

Oh, and she makes $850,000.

Well, most on here feel he's done enough to deserve it...but he would definitely have to be voted into the HoF first, that's a non-negotiable stipulation for having his name on the stadium. That means he'd have to be at 60% wins at the end of this season. Is that still feasible? Does he have to win out?

Along with the rest of his accomplishments I think it would be palatable: All-time Iowa wins, All-time B1G wins, and HoF ...oh, and he's just a super-duper guy who generously donates $$ to Children's Hospital, not to mention the greatest tradition in all of NCAAF was started under his watch.

Plus the $28M.

Not sure how old you are, but for the record, Hayden era vs Kirk era is not remotely the same.

Iowa football was in the shitter for almost 20 years before Hayden came along and changed the direction of the program. He turned it into a top-shelf program. It was still considered a top-shelf program when Ferentz took over. Sure, there were a couple rough years towards the end of Fry's tenure, but Kirk didn't have to make over a complete ghost town like Hayden did.

I was alive and well during those years and a season ticket holder...thank you to my father!

The 90's were nowhere near as good as the last decade of Iowa football, we had a 56% win % in HF's last decade, we have a 69% win % the last decade and 71% over the last 5.

The point is, no Iowa FB coach is getting fired with those results. I'm sure a retirement is in the near future, but KF isn't getting fired.

Nor will he know when it's time to go...that's the issue.

I still think the BF firing was more Wilson than Goetz. I think Goetz ended up being the mouth piece, but I think Wilson instigated the move. If you look at Wilson's track record, particularly at Illinois, the BF move seems right up her alley. And frankly, with as new as Beth was to the position, I don't know that she had enough capital built up to be able to make a move of that magnitude on her own.
Thanks for that - I had not known/heard Barbara had her fingerprints on that decision. Kudos to her though. Unfortunately it will be tougher ask to oust FM and/or The Don. I do think if FM can make a tourney run (Dance or NIT), he might step down on his own….🤞

That may be true. I'm glad there wasn't social media during Hayden's last few years. As much as people are unhappy with KF, it was worse in Hayden's last years.
Hayden's last season was clearly the end. I remember watching him walk off the field at the Metrodome. You could tell he was done. Let's hope KFz doesn't end like that...I think it's starting to trend that way. Next year could be rough.

As I stated in another thread, this is how the conversation would need to start:

Beth: "You know coach, some day your statue will be outside Kinnick. Hell, if things go right, it might even be called Kinnick-Ferentz by then."

Kirk: "Awwww, shucks."

Beth: "Wouldn't it be something if you and Mary were still alive when that happened, so you could be there to enjoy it?"

Kirk: "Yeah....wait....what?"

[long pause]

Beth: "Why don't you stop by my office later so we can chat about your future."
Kinnick, Moon Ferentz.

So we're clear, I'm not talking about being "fired"...I'm talking about being "retired"...there's a difference.

Instead of a messy and costly public firing, he's instead sat down and asked to consider the well-being of the program while also given some nice perks to go ahead and announce his retirement.

It can be done, and it should be done.

Hayden was given a much longer leash because what he accomplished for the program was much greater.

Would you take Matt Campbell at Iowa
No. He is not as good as some think.

I remember watching his TV show back in ISU's poorer seasons of his time. He sounded very defeated, very tired.

I think he'd get shredded up in the B10.

Besides, Iowa will have other options to consider.

I will say, it might be a good choice just to see 250k ISU fans all collapse and search for breath at once. Do not do this during a harvest, unless we want Maximum Overdrive (combines and grain haulers edition).

Fry was incredible for the Iowa program given where they were. I think his job was much more difficult than KFs in what he achieved.
AND even as much as I prefer HF over KF as a coach, it's clear that HF stayed at least one season beyond what he should have.

I am very thankful for both.

I do think it's human nature to romanticize the past. In 90 and 81 Iowa finished 8-4 and played in the Rose Bowl; finish 8-4 these days and people have pitch forks and flame throwers ready.

I was only 6 in 81 and my first full season of Iowa home games so I didn't understand the significance of that season at the time. A helluva ride on my dad's shoulders on the field after the MST game...actually the last two minutes of the game as fans didn't wait until the last play to occupy the north endzone. An amazing memory.

When talking about Fry, some like to just think about the years up until 91 and then get amnesia. There was a lot of ugly football the last 7 years with sprinkles of good wins.

While KF has had some ugly losses, especially the last few years against top teams, he's been far more consistent than HF's last years, and HF wasn't doing any better vs the big boys as Ohio St put up 56 in a first half and Penn St put up 63. Yikes.

No thanks.
I haven't seen enough yet to sell me on him. And his HC resume before coming here is not overly compelling.
I'd rather see them try to go the route of bringing in an FCS or DII guy who brings several key players with him via the portal. Especially with a complete overhaul of the offense implementing a mobile, running QB and the attitude that scoring points wins games.
You just described.....Tim Lester. Absent of course the FCS transfers in bulk. Which would totally work since FCS teams beat the top teams all the time.

We have a great game, we have a bad game. People lose their minds. We have 5 games left. Pace yourself. I hope we go back to kicking butt and Go Hawks! Football is a fun game. Let's enjoy the process

First year at U of I was Hayden's last year. When I scabbed for ABC Sports when they were on strike....I was essentially in the stadium for the better part 48 hours and was on the sidelines. You could see that Hayden was not healthy. I'm guessing the press corps knew what I saw. It was a different era. 1998 to 2025. Now, Hayden was going through cancer. Kirk is going through a point in his life that he should care about his legacy.

If she didn't see this coming from being the assistant, shame on her.

Matt Campbell would not excite me. I see him as a younger slightly different flavor of Kirk Ferentz.

As someone else put it, I do not believe he would provide us any sort of improvement in the Big Ten.

I think legacy is way overrated. Nobody cares.

Having enough money for your grandkids’s grandkids will mean more.

Legacy don’t mean what it use to 24/7/365 internet has made instant news more meaningful and history a lot less meaningful.

He is in it for the money.

“Big Ten All Time Wins Leader”. BFD Zero National championships, zero big ten title game wins, zero playoff wins, and zero appearances in playoffs.

He is the king of the Big Ten West and would have been long gone at any school in the East.

He let his kid get humiliated on a national level. It’s ALL about the money and “power”.

Thinking that Kirk Ferentz has some kind of super authority to unilaterally “call his shot” on when he will leave Iowa is equally laughable.

Ummm, every hear of Hayden Fry?
Ummm, Hayden didn’t get to call his shot. No coach does. The stakeholders at any given time do (whether a good or bad decision by them).

Unfortunately, in Hayden’s case, I think health played a bigger role.

People were calling for Hayden's head for years and he left on his own term.

Why feel sorry for Beth? She worked under Barta before he retired and knew full well she was the AD in waiting from the University President.

I think she has sat on the sidelines for to long with football, basketball, and wrestling. A good AD would be already replacing one of the head coaches and telling another that their performance is not the standard expected. One or two have earned a smooth exit, but the time has come to move Iowa mens athletics forward with more youthful coaches.

Money for salaries and facilities are there. With Carver being studied for improvements they can easily bring in coaches who want to coach with the new conference realignment. If Beth waits and things slide below where they are now it will be that much harder to get back to average.
I think Fran will resign after this season. His youngest will graduate from High School, and will go play at Butler. Connor is at Butler coaching.

Indeed he did. But “people” calling for his head is not the same as stakeholders.
Bingo.

Hayden made the right decision to retire when he did IMO but he did not have some imagined absolute authority to dictate when he would leave or the terms of his exit beyond the provisions of his employment contract. The same applies to Ferentz.

Continued employment is the sole prerogative of the State. Fan sentiment may have some influence on the University’s determination of whether continued employment is warranted but it is not, nor should it be, determinative.

Goetz's primary job is to raise money. That is the most important job she can do. Can she coordinate with the NIL fund to give Iowa a $20M football NIL fund. You guys are nuts.

I'd say hiring the right coaches is right up there, too.
