Barta proposes lifetime deal for KF

If history has taught us anything, it's that we should be cautious about contract extensions, especially in regard to buyout clauses. Even more caution should be applied during "eras of good feelings." You can't get so wrapped up in your current success that you make decisions that tie your hands down the road.

What i do know is Kirk has a team that surprises every great once a while. I also know is seasons were are supposed to do really well, we usually underachieve.

I am wary of a new contract, cause I figure we will all want him fired again in about another year so.

Then we will once again complain about how much money he is making for terrible results, and how his contract now runs until 2030, and how we are stuck forever.

Just sayin.

As for me? I would be more than comfortable letting his current play out, then if i want to add another year or two, maybe i do.

I would NOT be afraid to let him go, and go with a younger coach once again. Some folks are just so scared for change, we might be terrible then, right? I don't, let him walk. We are in the B1G and now have great facilities. I would embrace the change. .02

Does he deserve a lifetime contract? I would say yes. Has he let us down before? Again, I would say yes. I think there have been years maybe we expected to much, and years the team did not deliver. It seems like Kirk reapplied himself after the Tennessee debacle, and if he keeps it up I see good things happening. I love the coaching staff he has in place, and hope he can keep it together for several years. I know Greg Davis took a lot of crap his first couple years, but I think he was making due with the lack of talent, and now that we have a little more has been a solid OC, not to mention he and Kennedy's Texas recruiting. So, I am happy with his new deal. I am a realist and would love to see 10 plus wins each year, but know that is not likely. But we should be bowling every year.
Great post but I will say CJ can make a coach look really good. I am holding judgement until we see a couple of years post CJ.

My prediction: Barta signs him to a contract that extends him to five years, with a provision to auto-rollover every year so he will always have five years temaining.

The "base" will be around $5mil. The incentives will go up a bit, but buyout will go down. Richly enhanced deals for all assistants will be announced simultaneously.

Kirk coaches till about 70 before retiring and remaining in Iowa City.

I hope you are right. Kirk ferentz's love of Iowa runs deep. There is no one who wants to win more than him. I didn't want him fired last year at this time and think he should stay as long as he wants.

Give him a performance based contract with a $1 buy out. If that doesn't work for him let him leave. People on this board have short memories. We had a good record last year but we didn't even win the BIG. We have also lost the last 4 bowl games, 2 of which were blow outs!

Some people are impossible to satisfy. I really appreciate how your long term memory is recognizing the bowl games that were won, the conference championships that were won and the number of players that have gone on to the NFL. If you are going to question Kirk Ferentz then do it with every year of his coaching and not just the few you cherry pick to support your stupid claim.

Agree 100%. Most consider Urban and Saban the 2 top college coaches and you'll never see OSU or Alabama extend any form of "lifetime" contracts to those two.

Huh? Those two have more-coach-heavy provisions than KF ever did.

Reward for the past is fine but a coach's responsibility is for the present and the future. Recruiting is as important as coaching and Ferentz has had some low periods. You can't live on history and his compensation has to be success driven. Produce both as a coach and as a recruiter.
