*****Bennett Stirtz & Isaia Howard will follow Ben McCollum to Iowa City. Who else will be? 8 of 15 Roster spots filled*****

I've said this over and over again....just because you drop money on players it's no guarantee you will succeed. Chemistry matters, and the more that this spirals out of control the more likely locker room chemistry will suffer. Imagine players working their a$$ off for nothing and the million dollar high school kid who just stepped on campus! That's bound to cause some underlying issues. This NIL thing could back fire in a major way very soon.
I'm sure that, on the whole, those programs with the most funds will likely have the most overall success, but that being said.. I'd almost rather have a team full of guys that might be playing for a bit less cash, but are hungry and are all about winning as a team, as opposed to a team full of individuals who are only there to collect a paycheck. Kind of the "hard work beats talent when talent don't work hard" idea.

Understanding of course that you still need some guys that can hoop it up. Can't just throw 5 warm bodies out there and expect to win.

Really goes back to what Ben was saying yesterday about the importance of a team being "connected". I think he's right about this.

It’s still very interesting to me that he mentioned Josh, Cooper, and Pryce by name, but not Owen, Brock, or Ladji.

It probably confirms what was widely suspected, at least about Brock and Owen — that the door was closed on those guys. Still, notable that the new coach didn’t even mention them.

since he didn't mention Ladji, who's in the portal, I wonder if he's not gonna be welcomed back?

I suspect it has to do with wanting high character players. Ladji is a bit of a head scratcher, I didn't always love his play but think he could fit into McCullom's style

I'm sure you remember Tom Davis and George Raveling had TV shows each week. We have Hawk Talk now. I used to enjoy those shows. BM might be good at something like that?
I think their shows were connected to the Iowa television network who paid to broadcast the games. There may be different rules on coaches shows now that the BIG has national broadcast contracts.

so he apologized but kept the hat? or did Mike return the hat when he sent the apology and then woody returned both to Mike? there must be more to how the vine got a hold of these.
Mike Gatens felt guilty for what he did and sent the hat back to Woody, who in turn was impressed with Mike's admission of guilt and returned the hat to Mike with the letter of thanks. Personal note: I was a UI student at the time and working for the athletic department. I was on the OSU sideline that day and watched Woody pull one of his players out of the game and then pummel him with fist punches to the mid-section for getting into a fight with an Iowa player. I was also right next to Woody when Gatens took the hat off his head and split the scene. Woody went absolutely nuts on the sideline...again...and raised hell with the refs. A few years later I met Mike for the first time and shared my story and view of the mayhem he instigated that day.

now that is a csb!

Anything to be more engaged and accessible to the fans, I think would be a great idea.

Maybe have a student night at Carver in the very early days of the fall semester. Feed the students, have the players mingle with them. Then do some shooting contests--players vs students.

Hand out more free yellow ties.

At the end, have a drawing for free tuition, $500 Visa gift cards, etc

I’ve got two words for Brad and the Swarm:

“Gold Tie IPA”

Make it happen.

It has to suck being an Iowa fan, and watching your best player quit on his team with a bogus injury - and then, decide to enter the portal.
Must have missed it. Bring me up to speed. I understood the injury required surgery so assumed it was a serious injury.

Ladji was playing well the last few weeks of the season. He showed he can hit the glass, has a very nice 3-pt shot, and he sets a bad ass pick and walls off for others' drives. He improved some on his back to the basket game, but it needs a lot of work. Maybe BMc can teach him to just go to the basket with force on offensive boards. The main issue with Ladji seems like lack of quickness to me. I am not sure if that can be improved. He definitely is a good teammate.

His defense is quite offensive.

I didn’t realize that happened when Hayden was there.

This guy reminds me of Brennan Cougill that played at Iowa in 2009-2010 (from Heelan High School). He ended up transferring and finishing his college at Wisconsin Green Bay.
No, but they are both big white kids from Iowa. Cougill was thicker, but Jirak is pretty skilled under the basket, and is a good shooter. He just isn’t very athletic.

Anyway, I don’t think the rumors of him coming to Iowa are true. No doubt he would if given the opportunity.

That incidence with Mike Gatens stealing Woody's hat was when Bob Commings was the coach -- so either 1974, 1976 or 1977 (years OSU was at Iowa during those Commings 5 years at Iowa). I'm pretty sure that game wasn't televised, so I doubt there is any video of the incident.

I also recall that when Ohio State was in Iowa City in November when it had snowed the night before (gonna guess 1974), fans were throwing snowballs at Woody late in the gate. Needless to say, Woody didn't take getting hit with a snowball very well.

So the white guys are high character and the Black guy isn’t in your estimation?
