Boys high school state tournament moving to Hilton

This was already discussed around the time of the Boys State Tournament.

It had to do with how much money Casey's wanted once they assume ownership of the venue, and Pollard was already in the ear of the IAHSAA so they opted to give Hilton a try.

It's honestly not gonna be a hassle at all. I think anyone upset with the move is just mad about the breaking of "tradition" by not having the boys tournament in Des Moines for the time being.

The girls tournament will still be in the Des Moines, so you got that going for you if you're mad about missing out on all the things you could do when you go down to the State Tournament besides watch basketball....................just make sure your girls teams can make it to State. ;)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say money has something to do with it.

Just a wild guess.

Is this like the NCAA, where the $$$$$$$$$$ ends up being more important than the athletes (kids.) Lots of egos and salaries involved instead of what most schools/coaches/students would prefer. But that is what the education system is becoming unfortunately!

Anyone else think this situation is garbage? How are they going to move the state tournament from Des Moines in favor of a college campus? That's ridiculously stupid IMO.
Football =uni.
Why does college campus matter. Dsm is nothing special. People don’t go to state basketball for the downtown area like wrestling.

And every thing else in the country.

Crap gets moved around all the time.

Baseball is constantly moving. Golf moves. Swimming moves. Volleyball moves.

It’s not crazy for people to look for a better deal.

Plenty of parking and easy access.

Carver likely wouldn’t be very appealing with the hospital employees taking up the parking.

Agree.

The logistics around Hawkeye sports is just such a big crossword puzzle.
As much as I despise Iowa State, their campus is much more fan friendly.

Wells Fargo is kind of lame for BB. Like it or not Hilton is a much better venue with better parking and is still located smack in the middle of the state. Would make no sense holding it in IC and making teams/fans from western part of the state deal with that much more travel.

Better parking, but fewer hotels you can walk from
how many people are staying overnight for basketball? Nothing compared to wrestling. Wrestling has created a financial monster that weighs heavily on some schools.
You don't even want to know the numbers I've heard thrown around for state wrestling stays for larger qualifying teams. Hotel gauging food alone are crazy.

Better venue for basketball and cost we're the driving issues. Iowa State also made a huge push to make this happen. It'll never be in Iowa City due to logistics but I would keep an eye on the Knapp Center at some point in the future.

The area around the Knapp Center is a logistical nightmare. As decent a venue the Knapp Center would be for State Basketball, it will never host the tournament.

I don't have a wrestler, but friends that did. The added 4th day "to involve more kids" is such an obvious money grab. Its rediculous that nobody gets eliminated the first day. Literally every wrestler at every weight in every class will wrestle on the second day, requiring a night at a hotel. I'd only thought of it from parents perspective, though - hadn't considered that the schools pay for the wrestlers' hotels.

That's the challenge, but if it can work for state track it can certainly work for state basketball. The IBCA would really like to get it there at some point, so I'd never say never. 😉

The boys' union is already talking about moving quarterfinal games to various locations across the state.
XStream, Knapp, Tyson Events Center, etc. The Semis and Championship will then be in Hilton. 3-4 years down the road.
Hickory Park is amazing. The wait times will not be amazing.
I have a feeling once people experience Hilton, it's going to be hard to change it back.

Casey's did not buy the venue, just the naming rights.

I'm not sure, but I believe Polk County owns the venue

Hickory Park is trash. You should never be a judge in a BBQ contest.

Most over-rated place in Ames.

We will agree to disagree, I guess. LOL. Thankfully, I'm not a BBQ judge. The lines of people waiting might disagree, too.

Oh, ISU fans act like it is a 5 star place. You are not alone. I have numerous problems with the place. The metal ceilings make it impossible for me to hear with all the noise. If I'm going out to eat, I like to be able to have a conversation

It used to be really cheap and you could get a ton of food. Now it’s not and I might never go there again.

Honest question, what do you do in downtown DSM? I live in Ankeny and basically never go there.
Is this a for real question??

All of the best restaurants, bars, concerts, bike trails, theaters, museums, & the East Village is all downtown.

Ankeny blows.

I grew up by Ankeny & it still sucks.

The only thing it has going for it is it’s a 20 mile bike ride to the Woodward bridge from there.

Ankeny’s always been a poor man’s Dallas County.

The ghetto suburb. Little brother mentality of the metro’s suburbs.

Whew! I can’t stand Ankeny. And my grandparents lived there & I worked at Briarwood in high school when it opened.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.😉😎😝
