Boys high school state tournament moving to Hilton

Honest question, what do you do in downtown DSM? I live in Ankeny and basically never go there.

Is this a for real question??

All of the best restaurants, bars, concerts, bike trails, theaters, museums, & the East Village is all downtown.

Ankeny blows.

I grew up by Ankeny & it still sucks.

The only thing it has going for it is it’s a 20 mile bike ride to the Woodward bridge from there.

Ankeny’s always been a poor man’s Dallas County.

The ghetto suburb. Little brother mentality of the metro’s suburbs.

Whew! I can’t stand Ankeny. And my grandparents lived there & I worked at Briarwood in high school when it opened.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.😉😎😝

Downtown DSM on Court Avenue is a good place to get shot or stabbed at night.

Ankeny is far different from when you grew up. Yes, it is still your cookie cutter suburb, and no true identity anymore. But it has what you need and more.

The number of D1 P5 players in the state of Iowa is low compared to neighboring states. I'm not worried about ISU getting ahead in recruiting. People complained about moving the tourney out of Vets. I thoughts Wells was a big upgrade in fan experience, etc. etc. I do think Hilton will be louder and more intimate for fans. It is just a better place to watch a game. That's just one opinion, which many will disagree with.

Well… name one then.

Sounds like Dallas county is heaven on earth.

The boy$ in Boone like their pocket$ lined. Similar to how they u$ed to force team$ to u$e brand new football$ in the dome. $pon$er money

I always love people bitching about the Athletic Association in Boone. You guys have no clue how hard they work there asses off. Do they get everything right? No. Are they trying to make boys h.s. sports better, yes.

I don't know who runs it now, but I do know a couple of the former administrators and they had good intentions.

But keep on bitching about the boys in Boone....

Intentions more than likely are very good. So as long as the intentions are good they are off limits to analysis? They also get a decent amount of change to run the show.

Nobody is getting rich trying to administer Iowa boys high school sports.
Thomas Keating (Executive Director)$222,436$0$56,244
Todd Tharp (Assistant Director)$135,992$0$47,324
Chad Elsberry (Assistant Director)$123,537$0$40,681
Jared Chizek (Assistant Director)$118,804$0$39,708
Andrew Umthun (Assistant Director)$113,036$0$40,017

That's a range of $153,053 to $278,680. They aren't volunteering.

Wish the state would audit them. All that money they take in and I don’t see a lot of scholarships or anything given out.

All those tickets sold when tournament time starts. All those gyms filled up around the state and they take damn near every penny.

On another note, it was easy to say, "We made it to the Well" or "We want to get to the Well."
Gonna take a while to get used to, "Our goal is to make it to Hilton."

Do some if you realize how many schools and athletes that IHSAA has to take care of? How many events?

I've always found assholes on the outside to be uneducated or biased

Do you realize how many events are run by school volunteers so the money can go to the boy$ in Boone?

I find that people who resort to name calling and alleging a lack of education and bias suffer from the same issues.
Somewhere in the middle lies the truth. It isn’t a charity, their intentions may be good but they aren’t volunteering or doing it for their health.

The IHSAA administrators are good people who do care about high school athletics, but they often have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to make changes that improve the sports.

If it's not broken, they aren't going to change it. When you have a bunch of different sports and championships to administer, implementing changes takes a lot of extra work, and while they are well paid - there aren't many of them.

I don't know what they are going to do when they run out of officials in a few years. I think most of them know it's a big problem and hope to be retired before that bubble bursts.

Hopefully they look back and kick themselves for using the dome assignments to their cronies and not giving some young kids a taste...........and to those of you screaming parents and coaches who really caused the issue... a pox on you for doing that.....those guys are busting their hump and for not much money.

The answer is simple. You get a real-life Wilson Fisk type to come in and hold all the families of all the good, hard-working referees across the state hostage and force them to not only stay on the job (until they're 90......#reference), but to also do their jobs well, and care about the game and sport they are officiating. That will solve your problem....................

Yes and yes. Good people who did many good things. They (and their successors) have also made some mistakes.

I tell people this all the time. The ref/ump shortage is coming and it’s going to be a major issue. Major issue.

I just reffed 10u soccer last weekend and I had a coach dogging my probably 15u AR and me. I don’t give a crap but the AR kid was kind of shook. For all I know it was his first game. Who knows if he will be back. Kid probably missed an offside but that coach sure had to make sure he heard about it in a game his team was losing 11-2.

It's so frustrating. Young people don't want to deal with the crap from parents and coaches.

Those of us grizzled vets who can deal with the crap are overworked, burnt out, and frustrated with postseason assignments.

The average age of an official is 59 years old. Joint replacements are common. Most new officials who start don't make it past year three. Do the math.

50% of new baseball umps in Ankeny don’t make it past a year.

Yeah, there not that good. As a boys and girls coach of 30 years in the state of iowa, the girls union is far better than the boys.
Working hard... hardly. They should be combined like every state and have one naming system.
The boys union works hard and track and wrestling. Get people to DSM and keep them there sports. They only really care about the sports they make money off of, the rest are an afterthought. For example we medal 8 kids at state at each weight (some of which it's almost harder not to make it to state than to actually make it to state) In golf they medal 6 kids out of the entire state. At golf disticts you can get third out of 148 kids in your district (you have to qualify at a section to even get to districts) and not get a medal but the top 8 in each track event medal at a district meet which is tracks first round.

The job itself for the rest of the time and what they do with it remains to be seen.

This was already discussed around the time of the Boys State Tournament.

It had to do with how much money Casey's wanted once they assume ownership of the venue, and Pollard was already in the ear of the IAHSAA so they opted to give Hilton a try.

It's honestly not gonna be a hassle at all. I think anyone upset with the move is just mad about the breaking of "tradition" by not having the boys tournament in Des Moines for the time being.

The girls tournament will still be in the Des Moines, so you got that going for you if you're mad about missing out on all the things you could do when you go down to the State Tournament besides watch basketball....................just make sure your girls teams can make it to State. ;)
Not sure how it will all work in Ames with much fewer lodging options than Des Moines? It’s too bad, as I enjoy going to a few tourney games at Wells Fargo Arena; however, I won’t be going to any games at Hilton. 🥴

There are plays, musicals, concerts, bike trails, and decent bars/restaurants in downtown Des Moines.

What do the numbers on the far right represent?

Edit- column represents other. I'm guessing that is for travel/car/hotel expenses? $278K- would not have guessed that salary for that position. Keating is the former Wahlert volleyball coach and later- Xavier HS athletic director. Now I know why he left!

Is the officials issue mainly in basketball, or also in other sports too?
