BREAKING: Lisa Bluder announces retirement

Again. Its obvious by reading Beth's statement that this has been an ongoing discussion for sometime, and Jan was considered the best option going forward. Its not like they decided today.......

All I was saying was when was the last time a university announced the firing or retirement of a head coach and then less than 25 minutes later they were announcing the replacement

The university should be putting out an announcement any minute that either someone has been named the coach already or they’re going to start a nationwide search.

If its not Jan / Raina…. I fear for next year. People will leave, itll be hard to get kids to come in this late… I don’t envy Heiden or Deal right now.

Pessimistic much?

She has been crazy good for Iowa. Hope health is not part of this.
While the news was unexpected, I'm not really surprised. She's 63, she just spent 4 years coaching the greatest women's basketball player that will ever play at Iowa, certainly during her lifetime for sure, and could end up being the greatest women's basketball player ever. She took the team to the National Championship two years in a row and the chances of that happening again in the next 5, while not impossible, aren't likely. I can see why she would be ready to retire and enjoy some of the years where she is still healthy enough to travel and do things she hasn't had time to do in the past.

Definitely hurts to see her go, but Coach Bluder led the team with class. I'm sure many coaches would've failed at being able to handle the Caitlin situation, but she helped guide CC to being the best player in college and the most popular athlete in the world. That takes an immense amount of discipline and patience. She went out on top, despite not winning the championship. Enjoy retirement, coach! And build the statue!

Also, I'm so glad they immediately announced Jan as her replacement. No speculation, rumors, or interviews. Thank God.

I hope it works out. I'm very leery of handing the keys over to the top assistant in any sport. I'm a big Baranczyk fan. We'll see how this work out though.
Generally agree but I think this is solid this time around. Worst case scenario is you give her 3-4 years to build what she wants for her vision and if it doesn't work, move on to something else. Please, no Fran contracts though!!!

F*******************k!!!!

This sucks. Glad that she is going out on her terms but damn. She was a good coach and will be hard to replace I imagine. Now the transfers that may be coming...

Unless Jenson will be stepping in, I could see that occurring and that probably won't be a bad transition overall.

Just got a notification that the Lakers are now going to be in talks with potential head coaches.

Coincidence?!?!?!?!

I wonder if there's any chance that some recruit that announced for another school could flip to Iowa now knowing JJ is head honcho?

We'll miss you coach, that's for sure. Why does it have to be the ones I want to stay around forever?

Sort explains why she never would sub throughout the year to get Feuerbach, McCabe, and others in with the starting rotation when we were blowing crappy teams out of the water by 30 points. Didn't have to worry about replacing all of these seniors next year because she was going to walk away from the team.

The reason I AM a fan of it is that I assume the incoming recruits knew about it and are onboard.

Making a coaching change that resulted in loss of recruits/transfers could be catastrophic.

Brother this is a Wendy’s.

Anyway, will Raina be the new AC? She is on vacation in the Caribbean right now, the timing is certainly weird at that level if no other, considering this is probably prime time for press conferences, outreach to commits, etc…

Why would you change something that's been successful? Any head coach is only as good as the assistant coaches around them and for the most part the head coach is probably doing the least amount of day to day coaching. This was a great quick hire to keep Jan home.
