Brendan Sullivan commits to Iowa

Maybe Sullivan held onto the ball longer trying to extend and make plays, hard to say unless you see the video as to what was going on.

His high completion percentage combined with high sack rate appears to show that he doesn't throw the ball away, and eats it if he has to. His shorter yards lost per sack indicates he may have tried to scramble and run several times but was tackled for a loss, which is counted as a sack.

I do agree Sullivan is a much better option than Hill.

Could be another 10 win regular season.

Wait, so we have McNamara, now Sullivan, and an incoming Sullivan. All we need is to get Appalachian State's Mason McHugh out of the portal and we'll have the most goddamned 4-leaf clover of an Irish QB room in the history of college football.
Notre Dame must be "green" with envy.

I get the reference on 3 more Sullivans. My Mom grew up with them in Waterloo. They're from my home parish. I'm afraid their legacy is being forgotten and it shouldn't be.just search for the 5 Sullivan brothers from Waterloo. My sister also graduated from high school from the one child any of them had.

Seems everyone has forgotten Marco. I still hold out hope for him. For a kid that threw for something like 70 or 80 percent, he would certainly seem like he has potential. And his legs are way better than either other QB.

Badasses in a great way.

And compare the completion percentage:

Brendan Sullivan:

Year...Games...Cmp...Att...Pct...Yds...TD...INT
2022....5...........71......96....74.0..589....4.......3
2023....8..........63......99....63.6...714....6.......2

Deacon Hill:

Year...Games...Cmp...Att...Pct.....Yds...TD...INT
2023....13.........122.....251...48.6...1152....5.......8
And add in Hill's TOs by fumble and it's truly outrageous.

Ya know, we used to have these little gophers who tore up the pasture and made it harder to bale hay. So anytime we saw one, we tried to pick it off with the 22. Well, one day I take a shot at one that was out about 35 yards, standing up looking around like they do and I missed. He took off running all low to the ground and headed for his hole as fast as he could get there. I took one more shot and got him in a full run. I might have been a little lucky, but I was also bird hunting when I was 10 years old, so hitting moving targets is nothing new to me. My point is, and what I like about this kids tape is, he hits moving targets (and you do not see the targets having to make anything more then maybe a slight adjustment). I mean if we all gonna pick what qb is the best by who can hit a window on a non moving net, we are going to be in for a long day come game time. That is more what baseball is, throwing to a box that does not move. Anyway, we can look at sacks and scrambles and they do tell a story, but in my mind the most important story for a qb is how accurate he is at hitting moving targets. That is something that is more of a natural gift. Wind, speed of target and enough vision to see the surroundings at the same time, so you do not miss and hit whatever is around the target and keep the damage or ints as low as possible. Plus he can throw on the run and that is always a huge bonus. This is not your ordinary back up role, he needs to be ready to go from day one. This is also not your average defense, so the whole offense needs to be ready to go from day one. Then we might just have a chance at something special.

Can someone differentiate a "preferred" walk-on from a regular walk-on?

from google:

Being a preferred walk-on is the highest status a recruit can get outside of receiving an athletic scholarship. No athletic aid is offered, but preferred walk-ons will go into college with a roster spot secured, receive a uniform and have a strong chance of competing for playing time their first year.

What makes you think that?

why do I think union cards are history?

* Deacon Hill, who ended last season as QB1, is gone; it appears he was shown the writing on the wall.

* From the reports I have seen, Lester brought in Sullivan to not only provide an insurance policy but to compete for the starting job; unlike what we've seen in the past, Cade is not automatically QB1 and Marco is not automatically QB2

I’ve always wondered about this. It seems overblown to me but IDK I was a track athlete so there may be something to it.

“the language” is often mentioned as a formidable obstacle. How difficult could it be? I mean, we are not talking pee wee or even high school kids. Iowa players have been academically qualified to take college level courses. You’re telling me they are struggling to learn football lingo? Odd. It’s not advanced calculus.

To me - after a week or two of practice - saying a football player is struggling with language is sort of an insult to the player.
True, but the QB has to know what EVERY player will do for each play called unlike most of the other players who only need to know their assignment...

Will be interesting to see what happens here.

Rivals reports Ryan having offers from Kent State, Bowling Green, Ball State, Akron, Illinois State, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Temple, Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, Fordham, Cornell and Lindenwood.

I think it's more the excitement of new names and new faces, seeing/feeling some momentum FINALLY being built in the QB room. Marco is definitely in the mix and has a leg up in terms of he being a RS Frosh and having gone through the initial install under Lester.

I'm just damned excited for them all to compete for a spot under a legit QB coach for the first time in a looooong time.

Sounds like the type of competition we tend to beat out for our top offensive skill position talent....

No, I think we all are excited at the thought of Marco being Lesters first Iowa trained QB. Cade and Sullivan give us stability for a year or 2 and after that is when we will start to see the real impact of Lester getting "his guys" in place. We are just glad the process of a new coach trying to turn around the entire offense does not mean misery for the next couple of years and is probably going better then we could have imagined. (credit the staff and players for that)

I thought the same thing. He does not need the scholarship. Obviously his dad and him know Lester and he might just want to see what it takes to compete at the highest level. If I was him, I would go for it. Why not? If after a couple years you realize you are not on that level, you drop down a level with some great coaching under your belt and tear it up in the MAC or another conference.
