brooks vs abounder

Yes we lost a team point. It was stopped because they thought for some reason it was an illegal hold. It was kinda like a headlock, maybe the arm came out of the hold? I am really not sure as I couldn't see it too well on a small screen

What happen ?looked like he had fall then did we lose team point?
Yes and yes. Assistant ref thought the hold slipped to illegal so he stopped action. Review showed the hold was legal. Brands and Morningstar chewed the refs out and were deducted a team point.

Make-up call for the Gilman pin that probably wasn't a pin. We are -1 net points if you take that into consideration.

They are lucky the team score isn't all that close. Could have been bad for those involved

Again reffs are so dam inconsistence..some let scrambles go forever it seems and then stop them in just a few seconds. again stalling on top and on feet not being called as it should. Like in Gillmans was way more aggressive chase Nato all over the place and no call ..Be the same with megastaller just hope Gillman is pissed enough goes all out why lose 2-1 this is it baby let the fur fly.

Great photos, indeed. Looks like a legal fall as far as I could tell. Sounds like the refs totally screwed the pooch on this one, with salt in the wound in the form of a team point deduction out of spite for the Iowa coaches, who they presumably knew were right.

Incompetence + spite = a very poor combination for a wrestling official

Sounds like someone needs to have a little talk with Mike Allen.

Any competent referee would take a good look and be certain before interrupting a fairly certain pin situation, he is either an idiot or a thief. Cant wait to see Brooks next year. He is by far the most entertaining Hawk.

Move him up to 97 next year.

Go back to watching WWE or whatever they call it. Obviously you don't watch college wrestling much.

Because I'm questioning the pin call? You're right, wrestling fans never do that. Plenty have been flatter and not been called (Perry vs. Evans). Who cares, Gilman won.

I'd be very curious to know exactly how events played out, as I missed the match. I understand that refs are human and we all make mistakes. However, if a ref stops action AS ONE GUY IS IN THE PROCESS OF PINNING HIS OPPONENT. . . TO INCORRECTLY CLAIM THAT THE HOLD WAS ILLEGAL. . . he needs to accept a tongue-lashing from the coach of the wrestler who got screwed over due to his horrendous job of officiating. The LAST thing he should be doing, barring some completely egregious act by the coach in question, is penalizing a team point. He should be apologizing and letting things slide, IMO.

Yes. The official was under NATO's shoulder. I agree with the Perry vs. Evans, it haunts me. Much tougher call than having the ref watching for it for 30 seconds.

What a joke. These two refs should be reprimanded. Ended up being a 2 point swing after the one point deduction. I will never forget this one. I can't say I've ever seen this happen in a match of this magnitude. Stop the match in a pinning situation?

Refs have been ok... Sammy got f'd and gilman got Me jumping up and down at at a bar... However he was not pinned. I'll take it

It was actually a 3-point swing, if I'm not mistaken: 2 for the lost bonus points due to the missed fall and 1 for the team point deduction.

He was on the wrong side to make the call. My guess is the lead official was damn pissed, because the assistant was showing him up as well.

Assistant should never get to officiate at this level again. Simply horrible.

From the secondary ref's position, the headlock appeared to slip into what would be illegal (below the elbow). What he obviously didn't realize was that Sammy started with both arms and the head, and only Abounader's left arm slipped out. He still had the right arm and the head in a completely legal hold.

He's the secondary official and the primary is right freaking there with a better view than the pictures we have. Un-freaking-believable! That clown should never ref again if he doesn't know his damn role in a match. The unsportsmanlike penalty is absurd, what human doesn't argue that call? Name one. Even the subdued Cael would have lost his shit over that.

This is exactly right. The whole situation was created and compounded by the assistant official. Screwed up calling for a stoppage that wasn't necessary and made it worse by going rogue on the Iowa coaching staff for being pissed. Complete BS all around. Assistant should be reprimanded.

What the secondary couldn't comprehend, was that the primary had a better angle then he did. The secondary's job is to catch things when the primary is out of position.

Don't get me wrong, it was a horrible call. I only fault the secondary ref and the team point deduction. It's hard to fault the main official on this one. Is it correct that he could have called the fall and reviewed to see if it was legal after?

I'm fairly confident that this is correct. Can't review the fall, but can review an infraction, I believe.

Agreed, except Sammy had him stuck. The mat ref did miss the fall, IMO. That said, 99% of the blame goes to the assistant.

It's unreasonable to expect every ref to get every call right, but 1) in this case, the assistant overstepped his boundaries and intervened in a way an assistant never should, 2) he was 100% wrong in his interpretation of the action, and 3) he went one step further and overstepped his boundaries AGAIN by docking Iowa a team point when that, too, should have been up to the mat ref. Just an egregious series of actions by a ref, and it makes you wonder if this guy has some anti-Iowa agenda that might have been driving all of this madness.

For those of you who don't know, Big Fall is an experienced ref. This isn't just a bunch of Iowa fans talking out their rear ends. Fall knows his stuff, and he's blown away by this, too.

Even worse is the fact Sammy had to finish the match burning him out even more for his last one vs Miller.
Exactly!
One of the few knocks on Brooks is he goes so hard in matches that he sometimes burns himself in immediate follow up matches.
That assistant should be demoted to junior high. Clearly, he isn't ready for the big stage.

Has it been established that the 2nd ref stopped the match because he thought the headlock was illegal? Or is his intent staring in at Brooks right hand in pic 4 focused on a different illegal use, such as gouging the face or covering the mouth? Are there any pics to show what he was looking at?

That particular crew has botched about half of the matches they've worked this tournament, either with bad calls, or interpretations of rules....

That same official was involved in a controversial call made in a consolation match today between Ohio ST and Missouri which had Tom Ryan aggravated to the point where he pointed his finger at this moron and if I read Ryan's lips correctly he said something like "Watch your step or something like that" I call that official #18. Obviously his IQ rating. That team point deduction plus the possible or probable two points for the fall could cost Iowa a third or fourth place finish which is why we need a win tonight. I'm headed for Maine tomorrow to spend a month at my cottage along the coast. Damn good wrestling forum and damn good posters except for a couple.
