Caitlin Clark: Time Athlete of the Year 2024

As an unknowledgeable, delusional, stupid, and disrepectful member of the Caitlin Fan Club, I say CONGRATS CAITLIN. I look forward to many more years of your amazing accomplishments.

Incredible news. It means so much to the state, the university, and Hawkeye fans everywhere to see her reach such heights.

She wouldn't be doing what Lucy is doing
Really? Not in exactly the same way, BUT your saying that out from under CC22's presence that Kate Martin couldn't be averaging 18 pts, 5 boards, and 4 assists for this team? Not to mention providing another serious three point threat which this team is sorely missing? We'll just agree to disagree..

I’m with you. Kate was and is a hell of a player. Lucy is good but Kate is money.

I don't know if she could or couldn't. However, I do think that Hannah, Sidney, and Taylor look lost without CC this year so far. Hopefully, they'll make adjustments and play to their potential. CC took so much pressure off those players that they excelled. Without CC, they have a hard time creating their own shots or finding their niche. Would Kate Martin fall into the same category as well? Hard to answer that. But we do know that Lucy O can create her own shots though.

Well said, Ghost. Your comments are insightful and accurate. CC almost certainly would have enjoyed a much less stellar career at UConn, to name one of many, many blue bloods that would have forced CC to be a "traditional" player. No logo threes. No fancy passes. Most every other program would have put her in a straight jacket, and her true talent may never have fully emerged.

Few people realize that it takes an amazing confluence of events for a Caitlin Clark to emerge into the unprecedented star she has become. Lisa Bluder and staff, CC's parents and siblings, her Hawkeye teammates, the Iowa fans, modern technology . . . all those elements and more had to merge in just the right way at just the right time. And because they did, we continue to enjoy the phenomenon that is Caitlin Clark, Time's Athlete of the Year.

Not Shoei Ohtani, not Patrick Mahomes, Not LeBron or Nikola Jokic . . . a young woman from Des Moines, Iowa, who has shown generational talent combined with maturity far beyond her years. That's your 2024 Athlete of the Year.
Agree ... but Geno did NOT want her.

Glad she finally admitted her white privilege
GTFOH with that liberal BS.

Of course companies are going to try and capitalize off of her skin color.

Nike did the same thing when they offered Tiger a bunch of money when he first came out. They capitalized off his talent AND his skin color. Period.

Great article, great photo. Well-deserved honor. It’s a privilege to be able to watch CC play.

Nice photo of Clark! And a nice accolade even if Time magazine is a dying media.

*Kills me that people think Iowa should be playing the same way they did with CC22. Do they even understand what Iowa had on the court the last 4 years?

I sincerely hope that all that ass kissing CC did results in the end of the poor treatment she has received from all of these wonderful WNBA players. I fear that her admission of "white privilege" will only make things worse. The "I told you so" crowd will be out in force now.

I, for one, never kissed her ass.

To be transparent, I watched about 5 minutes of her over the four years she played at Iowa. That's 5 minutes more than I watched Iowa women's hoops before or after she arrived. It's too slow for me.

I agree with you. She is EVERYTHING that many in the WNBA do not like. White, Catholic, Straight and extremely talented. Now top if off with awards galore and now the cover of Time........there will be continued hate for her from existing players.

Black people would call this racism if the reverse were the topic of the day.

White people aren't allowed to say the same. White people aren't allowed to claim racism.

I wish she would have taken the Larry Bird approach and just play the game and not listen to the outside noise.

I think when people comment on CC22 speaking out, you really have to consider that NO player has changed the parameters of their sport both on AND off the court like she has. Not even Jordan and certainly not Bird. They were great players but they didn't change the way the game is played or totally changed the perception of how women can play like she has. Everything about her the last 2+ years has been uncharted territory both on and off the court.

She probably will face that, but she has now covered all of her bases. She is extremely media savvy, and is getting great advice.

In my lifetime, the only other athlete that I would compare CC22 is Tiger Woods. She's not there just yet, but the way she burst onto the scene and has TRANSFORMED the way the sport is perceived is certainly similar.

Agreed. At first, I was thinking Serena Williams, but she didn't really transform tennis. Serena just flat out dominated everybody but didn't elevate tennis to new levels like CC has done for basketball

The biggest difference:

Tiger was winning high profile titles before he became a professional.

CC hasn't really won much. WNBA titles are cool, but few remember the WNBA champ from 2019.

Billions remember Tiger won the Masters.

Maybe she will win one someday.

Excellent point. Tiger MAY be the one athlete that would even be in the conversation

Once again, trying to correlate players winning titles in an individual sport to a team sport is a fools errand. Tiger had to only rely on his amazing skills to best the competition. CC22 had to lift an entire team to be better then the likes of S Carolina, possibly the best collection of talent ever put together as one unit. A team who ran rough shod over the entire sport for almost THREE entire seasons. Until they lost once this year, that final four defeat to Iowa would have been there only loss in over two and a half seasons, and they're margin of victory was ridiculous.

You frame it as if Tiger is lucky to be in the same conversation as Caitlin Clark.

GTFOH
Its an individual sport. How do you compare him beating players when he only had to rely on his own amazing talent to Clark having to lift an average team to the precipice of the championship in back to back years against one of the top teams ever put together?

Nobody's letting her stay silent. It's literally the first thing she's asked about in practically every interview. And through it she's handled herself with the poise and grace that is seriously amazing considering she's 22 years old.

The petty jealousy being exhibited by all these grown women because they can't handle the fact that a white Catholic girl from Iowa has transformed the WNBA and proven herself to be the best PG in the league after 1 season is embarrassing and shameful.

CC is just going to keep making them all look small and silly.

And they will continue to beat the shit out of her as long as it's allowed.

The refereeing has to change or the WNBA will cook their golden goose.

But the subject can work outside of titles. The country as a whole didn't give two shits about golf until Tiger came along and totally transformed the PGA. Logo 3's, 320 yard drives. Triple doubles, 20 under par, points and assists by a rookie, titles won. And then for Tiger to win and his contribution to community service via all his business contacts and endorsements is unprecedented. CC22 is getting hers and to be honest, I could see her doing things in the same vein as Tiger.

I honestly think CC22 could quit basketball tomorrow and be as successful as Tiger. The PGA wouldn't be the PGA today without Tiger. The WNBA will never be what it is today without CC22.
