Will she reach Griner against Indiana? That will mean a 40-point game. I prefer her to get more triple-doubles instead of 40-point games though.

It’s remarkable how many points Hoskins got to with only playing a total of 110 games. That puts her at 28.4 ppg for her career. Clark is currently at 27.7 in comparison.

Not to knock on Ashley Joens because it’s within the rules, but there needs to be an * next to players who broke records due to having an extra Covid year. Yes, I know that means JBo too but it’s only fair. At least they list how many games they played to get to those point totals though.

Another reason I don't see CC coming back next year. It would taint her destruction of "the book"...

There is a giant huge asterisk next to Joens names in the scoring leaders already if you just look. She averaged 19.3 per game, everyone else on the list is easily over 20.

In general, I do agree that the free covid year is making a mockery of all records. In 50 years, will everyone be shaking their heads at these dumb covid records?

No, everyone will realize that it was a result of global pandemic that killed a million people in the US alone.

The Caitlin Countdown:

Caitlin had 26 points in last night's 96-71 win at Purdue.

3,244: Current Career Points.

27.2 ppg: The conservative number used in the calculations below. This was her scoring average in her first 100 Games (thru her junior season).

Important Dates (based on that conservative 27 ppg scoring average):

Sun Feb 25 vs Illinois (in Iowa City): Caitlin projected to break the NCAA Scoring Record of 3,527 points.

Sun March 3 vs Ohio State (Senior Day): the final regular season game. Will Caitlin participate in Senior Day?

Sat March 9 (the 2nd game of the B1G Tournament for a top 4 seed): Caitlin is projected to break Lynette Woodard's All Time Scoring Record of 3,649 points.

Milestones, with a projected 18 more games this season:

(1) 159 pts needed to break the Big Ten record of 3,402 (Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State; 2015-2018; 139 GP; 24.5 ppg)
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 6 more games to do it (27 ppg x 6 games = 162).

(2) 284 pts
needed to break the NCAA record of 3,527 (Kelsey Plum, University of Washington; 2014-2017; 139 GP; 25.4 ppg).
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 11 more games to do it (27 ppg x 11 games = 297).

(3) 406 pts needed to break the AIAW record of 3,649 (Lynette Woodard, Kansas University; the AIAW was pre-NCAA; she played from 1978-1981; 139 GP; 26.3 ppg)
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 15 more games to do it (27 ppg x 15 games = 405).

(4) On Nov 12, 2023, Caitlin passed Megan's 2,804 to become Iowa's All Time Leading Scorer.

Iowa is now 16-1 with a projected 18 more games to go this season. NOTE: during the 2022-2023 season (38 games) we played 29 reg season games, 3 B1G tourney games, and 6 NCAA tourney games to get to our final 31-7 record. This season we should expect around 35 games (30 reg season games plus HOPEFULLY AT LEAST 2 B1G tourney games and AT LEAST 3 NCAA tourney games).

Caitlin's 4 year Career Points Projection:
2,717 pts to start the 2023-2024 season (100 Games)
945 projected pts for 2023-2024 (35 games x 27 ppg career ave)
..........................................
3,662 Projected Points by end of 2023-2024 season (new NCAA & ALL TIME record)
===================

For GOAT Reference:

2,804 Career Points, Megan Gustafson (#26 in NCAA History)

...........20.8 ppg, 2015-2019, 135 GP

3,649 Career Points, Lynette Woodard (has the AIAW record, which was pre-NCAA; the NCAA took over the administration of women's basketball for the 1981-82 season; the NCAA has treated the AIAW, the first era of organized collegiate women's basketball, as if it never happened; in 4 years and 139 games played at Kansas, from 1978-1981, Lynette was a 4 time All-American and averaged 26.3 points per game; she probably should be considered the current all time D1 and D1 equivalent scoring leader).

Caitlin moved into 10th place in all time assists with 929 last night. Within the next couple games she should move up a couple more spots. Simply amazing top ten assist and scorer.
CC is very likely to exceed 1,000 assists which is by itself an outstanding achievement. Couple that with the most points ever scored in WBB and you have a truly unique and remarkable career.

She will probably finish this season at 6th all-time career assists but IMO it could easily have been Top4 if her teammates hadn’t fumbled or botched relatively easy scoring passes the past 3.5 years.

I agree 1000%. ...it's averages and not totals that matter the most imo.

Also, I appreciate how this topic has been appropriately left untouched in this thread about the WBB all-time greatest player, but if/when she becomes the overall (men's and women's) scoring leader ...let's just leave it as a simple reality and nothing more.

Pete Maravich, and what he accomplished in 3-yrs with NO 3-pt line is beyond reproach and will never be topped. He is the scoring GOAT, and that is final.

I concur. And that’s a great point about no 3 point line for Pete Maravich. IMO the reason arenas are full and it’s hard to get tickets to see Clark isn’t so much about her breaking the all time scoring record as it is the way she plays the game. Her passing and the way she scores are incredible to watch.

I think that sometimes too, but how many extra assists did she get playing with Miss Automatic MC for three years?
Honestly there are two ways to look at that. How many close in bunnies did Monica get playing with someone who SO often got her the ball in just the right place at just the right time? Do you really think she shoots almost 70% without a great facillitator to feed her?

We think there's hype now, and there is, but watch the media coverage as she gets even closer?

ESPN/Fox will be fighting each other.

Of course, Fox has the B1G media rights.

Correct?

Here's the TV schedule:

As I noted above, at a 27 ppg average MOVING FORWARD, she is set to break the NCAA Scoring Record of 3,527 points on Sun Feb 25 vs Illinois in Iowa City (TV: FS1; 12:00 pm CT tip).

The game before this one is supposed to be on Peacock (Thurs Feb 22nd at Indiana, 7:00 pm CT tip). Would NBC move it from Peacock to regular NBC TV? You'd think/hope so, especially if the record is about to be broken in this game. But I don't know what NBC normally broadcasts from 7-9 pm CT.

5 or 6 games left on Peacock. The powers that be are pure geniuses. PURE! GENIUSES! I wasn't able to find Peacock and then I did. However, once I thought it was all figured out it wouldn't stream. I had to have a guy (actually 2 guys) come out and help. It took them a while but finally got it to work. I haven't checked it out since Friday morning. If I was a wise person I should be checking it out more than that. I guess I am tempting the live-streaming gods.

The crazy part of all of this is that there is a real chance that her record could only last three years. JuJu Watkins is averaging 26.5 points in her freshman year at USC. Women's basketball is on the brink of a quantum leap forward.

Why always "last 25 years"? Was there a player 26 years ago that was really good?

I think that they didn't have womens complete game-by-game data before 25 years ago.

sports-reference.com has womens career records lists starting with the 2001-2002 season.

Here is the Effective Field Goal Ptg list, with Czinano #2(!!) and Gustafson #3 (not surprising).
