Caitlin ends her Iowa Career with 3,951 Points (NCAA & All-Time "Large School" Record). Megan Gustafson finished at 2,804

The Caitlin Countdown:

Caitlin had 40 points in last night's 76-73 win over Michigan State.

3,189: Current Career Points.

27.2 ppg: The conservative number used in the calculations below. This is her scoring average in her first 100 Games (thru her junior season).

Important Dates (based on that conservative 27 ppg scoring average):

Sun Feb 25 vs Illinois (in Iowa City): Caitlin projected to break the NCAA Scoring Record of 3,527 points.

Sun March 3 vs Ohio State (Senior Day): the final regular season game. Will Caitlin participate in Senior Day?

By the end of the B1G Tournament or the First Game of the NCAA Tournament: Caitlin is projected to break Lynette Woodard's All Time Scoring Record of 3,649 points.

Milestones, with a projected 20 more games this season:

(1) 214 pts needed to break the Big Ten record of 3,402 (Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State; 2015-2018; 139 GP; 24.5 ppg)
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 8 more games to do it (27 ppg x 8 games = 216).

(2) 339 pts needed to break the NCAA record of 3,527 (Kelsey Plum, University of Washington; 2014-2017; 139 GP; 25.4 ppg).
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 13 more games to do it (27 ppg x 13 games = 351).

(3) 461 pts needed to break the AIAW record of 3,649 (Lynette Woodard, Kansas University; the AIAW was pre-NCAA; she played from 1978-1981; 139 GP; 26.3 ppg)
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 17 more games to do it (27 ppg x 17 games = 459).

(4) On Nov 12, 2023, Caitlin passed Megan's 2,804 to become Iowa's All Time Leading Scorer.

Iowa is now 14-1 with a projected 20 more games to go this season. NOTE: during the 2022-2023 season (38 games) we played 29 reg season games, 3 B1G tourney games, and 6 NCAA tourney games to get to our final 31-7 record. This season we should expect around 35 games (30 reg season games plus HOPEFULLY AT LEAST 2 B1G tourney games and AT LEAST 3 NCAA tourney games).

Caitlin's 4 year Career Points Projection:
2,717 pts to start the 2023-2024 season (100 Games)
945 projected pts for 2023-2024 (35 games x 27 ppg career ave)
..........................................
3,662 Projected Points by end of 2023-2024 season (new NCAA & ALL TIME record)
===================

For GOAT Reference:

2,804 Career Points, Megan Gustafson (#25 in NCAA History)

...........20.8 ppg, 2015-2019, 135 GP

3,649 Career Points, Lynette Woodard (has the AIAW record, which was pre-NCAA; the NCAA took over the administration of women's basketball for the 1981-82 season; the NCAA has treated the AIAW, the first era of organized collegiate women's basketball, as if it never happened; in 4 years and 139 games played at Kansas, from 1978-1981, Lynette was a 4 time All-American and averaged 26.3 points per game; she probably should be considered the current all time D1 and D1 equivalent scoring leader).

I think only 1 rebound though, that's why it wasn't even listed. Wonder why the ball didn't bounce her way last night.

Ty for all the info and posts @Franisdaman !

So with 14 regular season games left, by my calcs, she needs to average just over 22 a game to get there? Should run away with it including tournament games.

The NCAA may have tossed Lynette Woodard aside but several posters (listed at the end of this post) have discussed her 3,649 AIAW (pre-NCAA) record career points at Kansas from 1978-1981. The NCAA took over the administration of women's basketball for the 1981-82 season.

I updated the previous post with this (using a conservative 27 ppg average):

3667 is the last number to add to the list for a watch. Yes Pete only had 3 years of eligibility, no 3pt shot, and no shot clock. But the SEC wasn’t fully integrated when he played, he played for his dad who allowed him to shoot whenever and wherever he wanted, and he never made an NCAA tournament meaning he played on lesser teams that didn’t have big scorers.

Interesting discussion. :)

I debated on whether to add Pete Maravich to the milestones list. Pete played at LSU from 1968-1970, where he scored 3,667 points.

Here's how Maravich's statistics break down each season:

1967-68: 43.8 points per game

1968-69: 44.2 ppg

1969-70: 44.5 ppg

Maravich scored more than 60 points in four games, even hitting 69 against Alabama on Feb. 7, 1970. It's the second-highest mark in NCAA DI history.

Caitlin in tonight's 96-71 win at Purdue:

26 pts
10 rebounds
10 assists

Her shooting:
6-14 (43%) from three
2-4 (50%) from 2 pt range
..................................
8-18 (44%) Overall shooting

4-4 (100%) FTs

Rick Mount from Purdue was a fantastic shooter but he did not have the all around game Pistol Pete had. Some of Pete’s passes were incredible.
