Caitlin ends her Iowa Career with 3,951 Points (NCAA & All-Time "Large School" Record). Megan Gustafson finished at 2,804

what asterisk? CC will break it in fewer games. Does LeBron have one because Kareem didn't shoot 3's?
It's what some people are saying, because had more points than Plum but played before womens basketball was governed by the NCAA. Thankfully Caitlin is within reach to surpass the record.

While Clark climbed the scoring charts, passing such stars as Brittney Griner, Jackie Stiles, and Kelsey Mitchell, there is one name that is missing from those NCAA scoring lists.

Her name is Lynette Woodard and she is one of the greatest women's basketball players ever. In her four seasons at Kansas four decades ago, she rewrote the record books, leading to a Hall of Fame career.

Woodard is a Wichita, Kansas native and after her high school playing days, arrived at the University of Kansas in 1977.

She finished her career scoring 3,649 points, the most ever by a women's college basketball player, and just 18 points behind the men’s career scoring leader, LSU's Pete Maravich. She won the Wade Trophy in 1981, given to the nation’s best women's college basketball player and a four-time Kodak All-American.

When Woodard started playing college basketball, the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women was the governing body for sports. The NCAA did not start sponsoring women's sports until 1982, holding the first NCAA women's tournament that season.

Because Woodard's 3,639 career points at Kansas predates the NCAA's sponsor of women's sports, her stats and records are not found or recognized in the NCAA's official record books.

I hope for the sake of people trying to make her new record an asterisk, that Caitlin shatters the Kansas record holder: Lynette Woodard who had 3,649 points. 80 points seem doable.

It took 139 games for Lynette Woodard to score 3,649 points. It will take Caitlin just 129 games to surpass that mark.

The Caitlin Countdown:

Caitlin had 49 points in #4 Iowa's (23-3, 12-2) 106-89 win over Michigan (16-10, 7-7) last night.

3,569: Current Career Points.

32.0 ppg: The number used in the calculations below. This is her scoring average in her first 26 games of the 2023-2024 season.

Important Dates (based on that 32 ppg scoring average):

Wed Feb 28 at Minnesota:

* Caitlin is projected to break Lynette Woodard's All Time Women's Scoring Record of 3,649 points.

* Caitlin is projected to top Pete Maravich's men's scoring record of 3,667 points.

Sun. March 3 vs Ohio State (Senior Day): the final regular season game. Caitlin is expected to participate in Senior Day.

Milestones, with a projected 9 more games this season:

(1) 81 pts needed to break the AIAW record of 3,649 (Lynette Woodard, Kansas University; the AIAW was pre-NCAA; she played from 1978-1981; 139 GP; 26.3 ppg)
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 3 more games to do it (32 ppg x 3 games = 96), which would occur on Wed Feb 28 in Minneapolis vs Minnesota.

(2) 99 pts needed to top the Men's NCAA record of 3,667 (Pete Maravich, LSU; 1968-1970; 83 GP; 44.2 ppg).
-----> Looks like she needs roughly 3 more games to do it (32 ppg x 3 games = 96), which would occur on Wed Feb 28 in Minneapolis vs Minnesota.

(3) On Thurs. Feb 15, 2024, in 106-89 home win over Michigan, in just her 126th game, Caitlin broke the NCAA career scoring record. The previous record was 3,527 points (Kelsey Plum, University of Washington; 2014-2017; 139 GP; 25.4 ppg).

(4) On Jan 31, 2024, in a 110-74 win at Northwestern, in just her 122nd game, Caitlin set the Big Ten Career Scoring Record. The previous record was 3,402 points (Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State; 2015-2018; 139 GP; 24.5 ppg).

(5)
On Nov 12, 2023, in a 94-53 win at UNI, in just her 103rd game, Caitlin became Iowa's All Time Leading Scorer. The previous record was 2,804 points (Megan Gustafson; 2015-2019; 135 GP; 20.8 ppg).

Iowa is now 23-3 with a projected 9 more games to go this season. NOTE: during the 2022-2023 season (38 games) we played 29 reg season games, 3 B1G tourney games, and 6 NCAA tourney games to get to our final 31-7 record. This season we should expect around 35 games (30 reg season games plus HOPEFULLY AT LEAST 2 B1G tourney games and AT LEAST 3 NCAA tourney games).

Caitlin's 4 year Career Points Projection:
2,717 pts to start the 2023-2024 season (100 Games)
1,120 projected pts for 2023-2024 (35 games x 32 ppg ave. this season)
..........................................
3,837 Projected Points by end of 2023-2024 season (new NCAA & ALL TIME record)
===================

For GOAT Reference:

2,804 Career Points, Megan Gustafson (#26 in NCAA History)

...........20.8 ppg, 2015-2019, 135 GP

3,649 Career Points, Lynette Woodard (has the AIAW career scoring record; the AIAW was pre-NCAA; the NCAA took over the administration of women's basketball starting with the 1981-82 season; the NCAA, unfortunately, has treated the AIAW, the first era of organized collegiate women's basketball, as if it never happened; in 4 years and 139 games played at Kansas, from 1978-1981, Lynette was a 4 time All-American and averaged 26.3 points per game; she probably should be considered the current all time D1 and D1 equivalent scoring leader).

Maravich really suffered because of lack of TV exposure and no 3 point shot. Pete played on mediocre teams for the most part. Pete was the best show in basketball during his playing days at LSU.
When I was a kid, my dad would wait for LSU to be on TV and we would watch the magic of Pistol. Every kid in my neighborhood was trying to emulate him.
