Definitely not what I wanted to see, but hopefully the loss is for the best. Learn from it, get healthier and healthier, get fully acclimated to the DI lifestyle and start Iowa's run in 2018-2019.

Lee is still a stud and a very close loss at the end of regulation isn't going to change that. Even Sanderson lost as a redshirt.

No.

If he can't wrestle without that huge knee brace, it makes you wonder how completely his knee has healed. Safest to keep the shirt on and get knee to 100%, but maybe more importantly, get bigger and stronger. He's an incredible talent, but can't expect to dominate giving up size and strength to big 125 pounders.

Bresser is a tough out, he wrestled Gilman very tough last year in the Midlands finals. Gman was dominating everyone and Bressers stingy D and stall tactics are tough to deal with for experienced college wrestlers let alone True Freshman. One of those matches where the better wrestler didn’t get his hand raised. Kinda like Alex Meyer vs Mark Hall. Years from now, it’ll be a trivia question. Lee lost to who?! Bresser?! Never heard of him

One loss and the shirt should stay on?? No margin for error huh? He is still the BEST 125 pounder on this team. If the knee is ok and the brace is just precautionary then let him go if he wants. If the knee is not healthy than he should redshirt.. The decision should be made based on his health and not because he lost 1 match.

I’m fine with whatever Lee decides, it’s his decision. To me it’s logical to keep the shirts on everyone and start planning for next year. Regardless of what happens with redshirts, 133 is a hole. 141 could be R12 with Happel, 174 could be R12 with Gunther. It’s too many holes.

Better chance of making a run next year. Offer Aaron Brooks a full ride and try to get him to skip the RTC. No money.. too bad, find some and make it happen.

I have been saying it would be the best decision from day 1, I was just hoping this outcome would be enough to tip the scales. I don't see Iowa winning NCAA's any which way and unless Lee winning it all looked to be a foregone conclusion(this loss takes that out of the equation), I think saving him for next year is the wiser course of action.

Am I the only one that thought Lee did not look small at all compared to the other 125#'s this tournament?

His knee looked perfectly fine when he was tech falling everyone and their mother, but he loses a close one and he's not 100%?

Lee is a very special talent and I don't believe there is any way the coaches put him out there if he is not 100%.

Of course, not only do I think he can challenge for the title, I'd love to see him knock off NATO.

Only guy I'd put as a slight favorite over him now is Suriano.

This should be Lee’s decision. If he wants to go, let him. It’s pretty tough for an athlete to accept sitting when he knows he’s the best we got and he can go with anyone in the country. That can be damaging to the psyche also. Can cause discouragement and depression.

Bresser was scared to engage hin and Lee wins that match the next time the wrestle.

Further, why does anyone think we get better next year. We lose Sorensen and Stoll and don’t replace them with better guys. And we still have a hole at 133. We don’t have anyone in the room and if we won’t pull Lee’s shirt, why would we pull one off a true freshman next year.

What about what happened with Stoll last year. If he is icing tonight. Red shirt. If it feels great, idk. The mff, tells me he prob red shirts. I don't think anything less of the kid. He is amazing. Needs to learn how to handle the runners.

Warner or $ to me has always been a toss. I think the experienced guy always seems to find a way when all else seems equal.
As for Lee ... I think (hope) he learned much today - this is not FS and he has a bullseye now. I would let this one up to him to decide - hope he gets pissed off and learn and take revenge.
Murin / Lugo - they need to cut weight to make this work IMHO. This year or next

Stoll is a junior

Where is Stoll going?

We lose BS, replace him with a threat in Lugo, and add Lee and Warner and everyone else is a year older. Of course we will be better.

You're kidding me, right? We have two guys in the finals with equally huge knee braces...should we sit them? As some have said, I think we leave it up to the kid and let him live with his decision. And all this talk about waiting and winning next year, I don't see anything better next year or the year after that or the one after that than what we have right now. Check out the next two classes; from all those recruits listed in the top 100 next year Iowa is getting number 17 and number 80. The following year I see where OSU, tOSU, PSU and ASU already have commits, but we have nothing. So I don't understand what all you people want us to wait for. Wait for BS to leave? Wait for the next imaginary PD3? I mean WHAT IN THE HELL ARE WE WAITING FOR? There is no silver lining out there barring something that doesn't currently exist. I think this is our best chance (as small as it is) with Lee and BS in the lineup for at least the next four to six years given our current group and our current recruits. And I know some of these studs (Murin, Young, Warner, etc.) will potentially give us a couple more points 2 or three years from now, but by then we will have lost some of our current points. I say quick dicking around, put our very best team on the mat and place respectably at NCAAs so young men will want to join our program, get our asses recruiting some of that 2019 talent and stealing some of those 2018 commits, and right this f**cking ship!!

I agree with keeping the shirt on. But not necessarily because of the knee. He didnt get beat today because of the knee

When it comes to a knee and wrestling(or competing in any sport), there is big difference between can't wrestle or shouldn't wrestle without the brace

I think he is in the "shouldn't wrestle" category as a precaution only and a long ways from can't wrestle. Otherwise he wouldn't be wrestling

GO HAWKS!!

It is really all up to Lee and his family even if knee is healthy..
It is there decision to make ..None of us can do that so foolish to even
discuss it IMO.

I honestly need someone to explain to me what the value is to pulling the shirt? Will it win a title? Will it truly help his career? Other than a selfish desire to see him compete (which I share)...why?

Every day and every season is a bonus. You can’t take it for granted. IF he is healthy (and I am not sure that he is) then take advantage of the current situation. He could get hurt in the future and having a redshirt to use at that time would be ideal. Medical redshirts and 6th years are almost impossible to get these days so it is a benefit to save the shirt for a time when you need it. I wouldn’t say any of this if I didn’t think he could win the NC this spring. He can. But, obviously up to Spencer and his current health.

Well, I get it but you can’t guarantee anything past present or future. He could get hurt worse now, he could get hurt in practice, no matter where that possibility happens, career cut short. So why rush it? All possibilities are equals really. He has the talent to be the man but got beat buy a tough but not top level guy. I think some of that is the injury that needs more time and the body of an 18year old vs nearly full grown men.

I respect the opinions of others but I see no upside this year. Just risk

Sick of the “meaningless matches” reason for these guys not wrestling. What the hell has Iowa wrestling come to?

If Lee is hurt, redshirt him and get him healthy. If he is able to wrestle then let him wrestle and get him ready for go time. Spencer Lee wins today if he had more mat time under his belt going in to that match. By MFF out he is obviously not ready and should redshirt. He needs mat time at the D1 level more than anything right now.

Regarding knee braces, not really the best examples. Stoll is several months ahead of rehab schedule than Lee and he’s not a true frosh with a redshirt to use. Also, Marinelli isn’t recovering from major knee surgery.

That said, I’m not saying I disagree with your overall point. That just wasn’t a strong supporting point.

And I will only believe Downey will be in our lineup when I see it with my own two eyes.

Bresser is a top level guy. Went to to toe with both Lee and Suriano today. Also went 2-1 with Daton Fix two weeks ago. What more do you want to see?

Clark MFF out a few years back. I think he was a runner up that year. You pick and choose your spots...especially since the only meaningful wrestling Lee has done was the state tourney and UNI. A lot of guys MFF out. Slowly build Lee’s match stamina and see how the knee is after a day or two.

He is not 100%. Just because he can beat some people handily at less than does not mean he is.

He did less wrestling this tourney than he does in an hour of practice. The knee’s either ready or it’s not. If there is a question whatsoever they shouldn’t pull his redshirt. My opinion but I am usually wrong. :)

Just to clarify, you are suggesting that the Iowa coaches would take the biggest recruit they've had in years, the face of Iowa wrestling over the next 4-5 years, a generational talent and trot him out to wrestle Midlands before he was fully recovered from a major knee injury?

Just checking.

Being cleared to wrestle and at 100% are not the same thing.
