Carter Isley to UNI

Still may. A full ride offered in football may change his mind

UNI isn't taking over but they have made inroads and are now getting some in-state recruits that may have went to Iowa for less money in the past. If Schwab gets Happel, now that would raise some eyebrows.

Would it?

I hope he goes to Iowa but having Turk, Ryan, Kremer, Sorenson around these weights may make UNI attractive. Not to mention they will probably be offering him more.

Schwab has done a great job selling his program to in-state guys the last few years. That being said, the in-state talent has been relatively weak the last few years and I am pretty happy with what Iowa has landed around this weight Turk & Kremer.

As far as Isley we have Stoll and hopefully Bradly at HWT. I would take both those over Isley.

Now Tyler Hoffman would have been a nice get for Iowa but the the kid is from East Buc right in UNI's backdoor, so not too surprising there.

I am certain that UNI didn't end up with Hoffman because of how close Winthrop is to Cedar Falls. Both UNI and Iowa showed interest out of high school.

Ok, like I said he would have been a nice get.

I am sure all the recruits are not just going to UNI because they are getting more money or have an easier road to make the lineup or are close to home. Schwab is a great coach and a likable guy. I hope Iowa & UNI go 1 and 2 at nationals in the near future.

Sure, I just thought it was worth mentioning it wasn't a proximity thing. Tyler and his family are Hawkeye fans. Schwab sold him on his program.

Of the three excellent recruits Schwab has nabbed from this class, the only one that broke my heart was Yates--he would've really firmed up the 126-141 roster and allowed either Mejia or Renteria to redshirt.

Happel fills the same need at 141-149. Unfortunately he can't man 133 for a year.

When was the last time UNI and IA dualed? I know Schwab has been wanting to get one scheduled. It is cool to see the wealth of talent get spread out. Good for wrestling.

Nice get for UNI. Not a need for Iowa with Stoll and Bradley. Wilcke is our future at 184 so Hoffman also not a need. Happal would be a great get but with Turk, Ryan, Renteria, BS, and Kemerer again not a real need.

We have no one backing up Wilcke or Holloway at 184-197. Both show a lot of upside potential but both are mid-tier recruits (#79 and #86, respectively). Holloway must start as a RS freshman. Those guys are facing off against guys like Snyder, Nickal, Valencia, Myles Martin, McCutcheon, Miklus. That's putting the same pressure on them that we're putting on Paddock and Stoll this year, and without a net. The only 74-pounder we'll have in 2 years is Paddock, presumably moving up to make room for Marinelli. So that's 3 weights dependent on significant improvement to yield a finalist, and with no fall-back plan. Would Hoffman have been the salvation? Don't know, but I wouldn't say those upper weights aren't a need.

Ditto for 141-149. Happel solidifies 141-149 by having a blue-chip stud in there, particularly after Sorensen graduates (assuming Kemerer at 157). If Ryan and Turk were named McGinness and McIlravy, it wouldn't be an issue but, like 174-184-197, they're still question marks.

I do agree with you about 285, assuming Bradley comes in. Stoll is a work in progress, but he's a RSF and it doesn't make sense to recruit at that weight for a couple more years.

In short, I badly want Happel. And I wish we had a time machine so we could go back and figure out how to get the Valencias and Hall.

We if he can improve in the room, buy into the program, and bust his ass I can see Holloway being someone that will surprise some people. He is quick, fast, built, and has great balance. The only thing I think that could be a black mark on him is his gas tank but that can be worked out in the room.

Iowa also has Mitch Bowman for 184/197 for depth. I think he's probably around the same recruit ranking as Wilcke and Holloway. I'm with Herk, Holloway seems like the kind of kid who will really excel once he's 100% wrestler. He did pretty well in a couple of the all-star type meets.

He wrestled in the Dream Team against Steveson right? Did he wrestle in another one?

How many ties to Iowa does Happel need, his dad, all the Lisbon ties, his mom went to school there, Slayton I think is one of his coaches, Brad Smith was NCAA champ at Iowa. So Dean please point Carter to the South and say your school is that way son, it only gets colder going North!! LOL Guess we better get a new recruiter if M* can't get a 1a guy from his own home town. LOL

UNI will definitely take over Iowa if Brands keeps up his lack of recruiting. It just doesn't look like any of the studs want to wrestle at Iowa. I think wrestling season is grueling enough and the best wrestlers are looking for someone less intense. Schwab is much more relaxed and it's a tight family at UNI.

This has to be the worst trolling job ever. Studs don't want to come to Iowa? What exactly are Kemerer, Marinelli, Mejia, Turk, Renteria and Young?

UNI should be more concerned about taking over the 33rd spot at Nationals

Lol troll

Getting destroyed by Tom Ryan and Zeke Jones in recruiting? The days of championships are gone, unless we get Lee AND Hall. On the latter, Iowa has no chance. The former about the same. We'll always have the best fans and crowd, but the extension was the nail in the coffin.

so Stoll, Mejia, Renteria, Kemerer, and Marinelli are considered non-studs?

and ASU #1 this past year with a #11 in 2010.

What i'm seeing is a lot of ebbs and flows in recruiting, and the fact that Iowa has had two #1 ranked recruiting classes in the past 8 years, as well as only one of those years being out of the top 10, which cannot be said for any of the other teams. I know they are subjective rankings, but to get a high ranking you need high ranked recruits, and I think it shows that Iowa has been right there in recruiting and will continue to be, but sometimes not everybody pans out according to rankings.

What is this we stuff? You have a turd in your pocket?

Who has Ryan signed this year? They have one class under their belt. It was a good one but I have a feeling a lot of their money is tied up for a while.

Brands hit a grand slam with the current Junior class; 5 starters this season, all potential AAs. Since then, there has been a gradual drop off combined with a lot of attrition. Depth could be a real problem in a couple years. This was an important class for fixing that, but to be honest I'm seeing more of the same so far. As Tarp alluded to, Iowa needs Happel a bit more then you think. I realize some are very high on Turk, but based on his recruiting ranking, I'm not sure where that is coming from. I'm going to stand by my statement that if UNI gets Happel, that will raise some eyebrows.

These numbers don't really tell the whole story. Rankings are based on the recruits' rankings as well as the number of recruits. Iowa has tended to go with a larger number of very good recruits. PSU, and recently tOSU and ASU, have gone the route of super stud recruits - although fewer of them.

This has been working well for PSU and tOSU over the last few years. We will see if this trend continues. Maybe the depth will pay off again over the next few years and maybe it won't. Maybe Iowa changes it's tactics if the trend doesn't change.

Pretty sure that UNI is not taking over Iowa any time soon.

You continually bash Iowa (and their recruiting) in this thread, and then you make the reference that if "we" get Lee and Hall???
