Chad Leistikow on Bakari Evelyn's commitment

Welcome BE we are thrilled you chose the Hawkeyes. Amazing we get the grad transfer we all were hoping for and no one giving the coaching staff the love they deserve. Great work Coach Dillard and Coach M!

Interesting that Valparaiso plays “one of the slowest paces in the country.” It makes BE’s soph numbers seem better than they were.

You are right. Fran is getting no love from the guys who bitched that he won't look at a Grad transfer. Fran has explained his position many times yet these folks don't ever listen. This one made sense and it was a guy they were familiar and comfortable with and vice versa.

Some people won't be happy no matter what Fran does. Landing Bakari Evelyn is fantastic news, because he's exactly the kind of player we needed. Imagine that – a grad transfer PG.

Is he a "true point guard," Fran haters?

haha he is a dreaded combo guard....what we need is a pure point not a guy who has unlimited range and can score like Bohannon....When will we ever get it right lol

sounds like mostly you are bitching. Congrats to Fran for getting one transfer when he was he was in obvious desperation mode losing 3 guards in short order. Fran has watched his various recruiting busts Hutton,Dickerson,Flemming, CW,Wagner, Ellingson, Moss transfer out while not bring in much replacement talent at guard. Before I get to excited, I'll wait to see how the season turns out. He's paid to win, so lets see if he wins. I know 10-10 in B1G thanks to Bohannon heroics is almost a B1G title, so I will take that next year...but would not be surprised to see another 5 win type B1G season like Fran gave us just 2 years ago.

I think Fran should be commended for landing BE. With JBo's status uncertain, it's a huge get.

Oh, and I get many in the fan base are fickle, but it's equally foolish to think Fran is above being criticized.

There are idiots on both sides of the Fran debate.

Moss was not a recruiting bust.

I wonder if Bakari played in Des Moines against Drake. I'm doing a FB quiz tonight among my friends to see if the Drake fans saw Bakari play. Anyone here go to Drake games and see Bakari?

From what I can tell, it appears that Evelyn had to play for a prep school as a senior because he had issues due to transferring from MI to AZ. Anyone know what that was about?

He can play the point, but he is a better 2 than a 1. He is not a guy who can create for others on a consistent basis but can get the team into their sets efficiently.

I believe he followed a coach down there....but his family contacted several AZ schools looking for the best "fit" for Bakari.

I thought there were some odd happenings there. I hope that part of family involvement is in the past.

Between CJF, Joe T. and Evelyn, we might have three guards that can get by their man on offense and stay in front of their man on D. Last year, we had none. I am damn excited about that.

I would say that Connor and Joe, both freshmen last year, were pretty good at this.

I watched nearly every UNI game last year.

He looked pretty damn good in the games I saw. UNI wasn’t good last year and their D was worse than usual, but they weren’t awful either.

First, I hope he's a significant upgrade over Sapp.

Second, I really like the well oiled machine quote.

Both Connor and Joe played excellent defense last year and moved the ball and made plays for others. Both had great freshmen years!

Sapp was probably the best defensive guard Fran’s had at Iowa. So that’s a high bar. I think both BE and JoeT will stay in front of opponents better than Moss/JB. If these new guards can get the ball to the front court with a good A/T ratio and make people guard them, our O will remain high nationally.

Eric May when healthy, although he was more of an offensive 3 but defensively he pretty much guarded the opponent's best offensive player 1-3. He could stop big guys with charges and a big leaping ability for a guy only 6'5" and a bad back.

AC was a tough defender, no doubt about that. He was damn gritty his senior year. I'd like to see one of the new guards, well all of them actually, watch some of the Woody/Mike G/AC defensive plays every day. Message: this is what our defense looks like when good defensive players play it.

Crazy dumbness ........I love how some people think that no other team has ever had a recruiting misses .....just plain dumb! Players are always leaving even top shelf programs. Another 5 win season ....wow ...why even be a Iowa fan with that kind of confidants. That season the problem was Iowa was playing mostly underclassmen ...... at this level playing that many young guys it's to be expected! Just a little bit of reality would go a long way on the board!!

In '17-'18, Valpo was 205th out of 351 teams in possessions per game. Slightly below average, but not one of the slowest in the country.

https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/stat/possessions-per-game?date=2018-04-03

Looks like they were 315 last year so that's probably what Leistikow was basing it on. Im '16-'17 they were 183, so not sure I would call them one of the slowest but they are definitely in the bottom half of the country and especially slow when compared to Iowa.

Fun fact based on that link, Iowa has gone from 19(!) to 112 to 124 in the last 3 years. That's kinda crazy.

My biggest concern with him is how poorly he has played against P6 competition throughout his career. He had a handful of games against P6 teams while at Valpo and really struggled. This isnt going to be the Valley night in and night out next season. Below are his stats against P6 teams while at Valpo (2 seasons):

30.6 MPG
5.6 PPG
3.0 RPG
2.2 APG
3.6 TO/G
0.2 SPG
23.1 FG% (9-39)
22.2 3FG% (6/27)

Some guys on here would bitch if they were hung with a new rope !!

I wouldn't put much stock in this, TBH. So the dude didn't drop 25 against Purdue. So what? He was surrounded by mid-major talent on some bad Valpo teams. At Iowa he'll be playing alongside guys like Wieskamp and Garza. Totally different situation. We don't need him to be a primary scoring option, we need him to handle the ball, distribute, make a few threes and play defense. Next season our offense runs through Joe W. and our bigs.

So what are you putting stock in that he can do this?

Nobody is asking him to drop 25 in Mackey Arena. But to see shooting percentages below 25% and a terrible A/TO ratio makes me worry that he will have a hard time handling the ball, distributing and making a few threes.

I think he is a solid pickup but to think he didnt struggle going against P6 competition is burying your head in the sand.

I read that that he played his Senior year of H.S. ball at a Prep School in Arizona

Iowa's perimeter players this year (with exception of Wieskamp) are a series of big question marks this year. No one can say with any certainty what will happen. It's why Iowa will likely be picked for 10th or worse in the league.

Connor Mc - good passer, knows how to play, good size. Also shot 36% from the field and 20% from 3-point range.
Touissant - good potential but yet to play against Big 10 level competition.
CJF - rave reviews from redshirt year but yet to play against Big 10 competition.
Evelyn - good as a sophomore, not very efficient as a junior. If healthy, could be good addition.

Iowa needs a lot of best-case scenarios for the backcourt to be good. That's why seasons are interesting.

Dodge,

Sorry but I don't agree, 10th or worse? Our inside game with Garza, Krieger, Nunge and Pemsl should be solid. Connor is a better floor general than JBo and should be able to distribute. Toussaint brings a new dimension with his quickness and defensive prowess. Evelyn will bring maturity and a decent three. We will miss JBo's shooting but hopefully CJF and Wieskamp will fill the void.

There is talent on this team and the chemistry and defense could be better than last year.

Trey Dickerson brought a new dimension and defensive prowess also. How'd that work out? You're assuming a lot of question marks turn out great, not likely.
