Connor McCaffery leading state in hitting

If Connor is actually a highly ranked baseball prospect, he might have a decision to make about whether to go to college at all. I have no idea how highly ranked of a prospect he would be, but I could see a kid with his size and athleticism being a guy that could get taken in the first 3 rounds. Seems like he would project as the prototypical 5-tool player. If he were good enough to get drafted early and be offered a large signing bonus, it would be an interesting decision to ponder.

Sounds like he'll be playing both unless Heller says no, but I doubt that would happen especially since he would be on basketball scholarship.

5 tool player includes someone who can run well. I think Connor is very talented but I don't see that being being one of his tools

It's early in the season but the Junior from Iowa City West has 13 hits in his first 20 ABs with 3 HR, 3 3B, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 11 Runs, & 4 SB. That's good for a .650/.731/1.500!!!!! Unreal slugging percentage!

Keep it up Connor!

Connor though still with a good batting average of .394, second of starters on his team has cooled considerably since his first 20 at bats. This is what he has done in his last 46 at bats in comparison.

13 hits in his first 20 ABs with 3 HR, 3 3B, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 11 Runs, & 4 SB

13 hits in his last 46 ABs with 2 HR, 0 3B, 0 2B, 6 RBI, 11 Runs & 2 SB

Just a coincidence that the hits & runs are the same for both segments of games. I got his current stats from
http://quikstatsiowa.com/Public/BBS...?IDSport=B25923B5-D303-41CA-B9B3-DF2527D84CDD but you then have to click on Iowa City West and load list to see his current stats posted as of 66 at bats.

It's a lot tougher to find lefties who can hit a baseball than it is 6'4" guys who can hit a jump shot.

He also doesn't have the arm strength yet. Having a 290 foot right field fence can't be bad for the power numbers as well. Pretty short fence for a lefty.

I think Danny Ainge played for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Celtics. Not sure it was at the same time but he might be the last guy to play both MLB and NBA.

I was sitting with a knowledgable college coach at one of West's baseball games. He has seen Connor play both sports multiple times and, in his opinion, he "he should put away the big ball and focus on the small ball." He feels his chances to make a living playing baseball far surpass any chance to do the same palying basketball. Obviously one guy's opinion but a pretty good authority on the topic.

Dave Winfield is an oddity. He was drafted by 4 teams in 3 different pro sports (MLB, ABA, NBA and NFL). That was also 40 years ago.

Either way, if Connor is that good in baseball, I hope he gives it a chance.

The thing about talented high school kids when it comes to the MLB draft, even if they are a higher tier round talent, if teams don't feel they can sign him then they won't waste the pick. That's how a lot of really good high school kids with top 3 round talent end up getting drafted in the 20th round when a team can take a stab at them but not worry about wasting a pick.

With that, if an MLB team thinks that Connor isn't going to sign with them, then they won't waste their time. The only exception is if Coach lets him sign in baseball and the MLB team allows him to still play college basketball.....which I think would be unlikely.

I may be wrong, but in the late 60's Sam Williams played basketball and another sport for Iowa if my memory is correct.

So did some guy named Fred Mimms although it was in the 70's and only for a year or two.

It looks like Connor is a long ways from leading the state in hitting now. The cart is in front of the horse primarily due to his last name. I wish he would focus 100% on basketball or give up his scholly and walk on if he intends on playing both.
