Connor & Patrick McCaffery Mix Tapes

Not lightning fast like some PG's but you can tell he could handle the rock in his sleep. Very comfortable with the ball in his hands.

Both are very smooth players. Connor has really put on good weight, but Patrick is still a stick. Good thing he has 3.5 years to grow!

Both kids shoot from the shoulder/chest arc, wonder if mom's been teaching their shooting skills. They will have to work on it in college.

Conner strikes me as a Horner clone. Very impressed. After watching that I've no doubt he can play the point in the Big. Horner was the best open court passer I ever saw in an Iowa uniform. Always kept his head up when he dribbled up court and was always aware and in control. I see the same thing in Conner. Damn, were going to be good!

Connor really passes the ball well and should turn into a pretty good all round player. Remember he has another year to develop still.

Patrick- Wow. Dude has 3 more years of high school to get bigger and stronger. Could be really good when all said and done.

Both could use to work on the shot release but that will come with time and reps.

I think Horner is a good comp. Big guards, average athleticism, good shooters, and great handles/feel for the game. I like the idea of him playing with a true point or combo guard as well, and basically having two primary ball-handlers on the court.

The Jeff Horner comparison for Conner is spot on. He might have better handles than Horner.
Horner was a great hawkeye and if Connor can contribute like Horner during his career, we will be in good hands.

Patrick as a freshmen. Wow! He has The whole package. He is more athletic than I thought he would be.
Great anticipation on the shot blocks and keeps it in play. He will need to add weight, but his potential is off the charts.
The future looks bright for Hawkeye basketball.

Both players look really unselfish.

Yes, and I think we get to see a lot of their Dad's influence, a hint maybe, as to the kind of ball players at Iowa should expect to play. Passes are faster than feet and good passing creates shots better than the best individual shot creators.

Horner is a good player to be compared to, but I wonder if Conner will be point guard at college level. I think the better comparison for college level may be Matt Gatens. Using that comparison, Conner is behind Gatens at this point in their high school careers and I have talked to several people in the IC area that have seen both players that agree with this evaluation. The major problem with Conner game is the release point of his shot, it is very low at this point. Given that his father is D1 coach, that weakness surprises me too. Hopefully, that will improve in the next 20 months before he steps on the court in black and gold.

As for Patrick, he has a lot of length and needs to develop strength, but I feel good that will come as he gets used to his body and has a chance to work on strength. I grew very quickly in high school and know that it is hard to develop strength during this stage in life and then you factor in the health issues that Patrick had last year, I am hopeful he has a bright future.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to talk to two former UI athletes. Both felt that Fran should gray shirt both his kids and give the scholarship to other guys. Everyone talks about wanting more scholarship players and Fran could have the best of both worlds. Of course, it could probably work against him in recruiting with a potential recruit knowing that Fran has these two players in his hip pocket that will compete for PT.
