Cook

Some of the best players since the late 1980's? I hate to tell you, but both Raveling and Alford signed higher rated recruits (better players) than Fran has brought on board during his tenure. MG and Woody are the only highly rated recruits (4 star or better) that Fran has signed. Fran is a very good coach at developing players and coaching strategies, but his lack of real recruiting success has been a head scratcher, imo.
Raveling was not at Iowa in the late 80s. Davis was. And both he and Alford had trouble keeping the players they brought in.

Sounds like some folks in Missouri are not particularly confident in landing him. They also feel Iowa maybe the leader at this point. Hopefully Fran can lock him down in late September early October.
where'd you hear that?

Fran is an awesome guy, friendly, personable and full of energy as he displays on the recruiting trail. He has a good instinct in finding guys with potential then recruiting them hard. Fran is not the reason some of these guys aren't coming here, I think it has more to do with that we are the state of iowa.
Out of staters see iowa as boring and not hip enough. Win enough games and make some tourney runs would help overcome that stigma.

I wonder about the options if Cook does not come to Iowa. Maybe saving the scholarship for a while and see who is available in the spring or using it for '17 might be wise.

I hate to say it Iowalaw, but this long into your tenure of posting, it's kind of sad, that all you do is whine and complain. You absolutely have to be the antiHawk because I have never seen you post anything positive about anything. I wonder if you're perfect, my guess is probably not.

I was taught if you don't have something good to say, then say nothing!

Sue him Iowalaw.

We are on the cusp. Literally right there knocking on the door. I believe we just need more big wins. Espeically when we are showcased on ESPN and CBS. And continue to make the tourney. And these kids will get it and start coming here.

The more we are in the face of college basketball, the more likely we land these kids.

It will happen. I have faith in Fran. He has the borders sealed up tight. Others outside the state are taking notice.

This season looks good, and the near future looks very good. Coach Mac will start reeling them in. Hopefully Cook is the start of that.

Probably. Although Rakocevic is still out there and some have him favoring Iowa. In '17, I like Theo John.

Talk about silent. Haven't heard anything about him all summer. Maybe he had a bad summer and is losing interest from schools?

The Mizzou boards and the blog that is the Mizzou version of BHGP are beginning to think Cook is an Iowa lean now that they're inviting some other bigs in for visits, like Reed Nikko.

In other news, Santos is attending Sunrise Christian in KS this year and will have visits to Oklahoma and Wichita. We must have backed way off when he got hurt.

Alford signed higher ranked players, Fran has signed better players. Pretty indisputable.

This. If we continue to progress our results, they will come.

Rumors going around that it's Iowa or Florida for Cook unless someone like Arkansas can sway him. I like Iowa's chances here based on relationship, academics, playing time and a comfortable distance from home.

One thought on comparing Fran's recruits to Raveling's and Davis's recruits. Today, there is so much AAU basketball to compare the talent of high school players, the rankings are usually fairly accurate. The rankings back then were not nearly as accurate. I remember a couple of Iowa recruits who were highly thought of that did not pan out. Same with every other school. Today, these rankings are usually fairly accurate.

So you are a star guy? Name me the big time stars that Alford recruited.

Raveling was the man when it came to recruiting. Not so much in other phases of coaching. Lute was starting to get elite recruits in last few years at Iowa and continued at AZ. Davis had some solid classes, but not consistently at the level of late Lute and Raveling. Until his last couple of years, wonder boy was doing very well at attracting highly ranked recruits, but he could keep them on the court or in the program. Lick was just a bad mistake. Fran has a great eye for talent and seems to spot unrecognized talent before most other programs. He still needs to overcome the "it's only Iowa" thing that makes it hard to close on top recruits, even when they like him and the program. Fran is making progress in Chicago and with top HS programs, so there is reason to be optimistic. Even the "fall back" players have been pretty damn good.

Recker, Worley, Evans, Reiner, and smith come to the top of my head without looking it up.

Those guys stunk.

Give me Gabe over Evans
Give me Woody over Riener
Give me White over Worley
Give me Marble over Recker

And Smith? Lol, he was a great Hawkeye wasn't he.

Pierce was the big one. Brunner, Haluska, Horner, and Hansen to add to your list. Alford was a good recruiter. I didn't like the team chemistry or in game coaching.

I don't want to bag on former Hawkeyes but a lot of his former players were scabs. Brunner was solid, but him and White would be splitting hairs. Not only that, but these are Iowa guys. Alford could only land guys who were loyal to the state and the Hawkeyes. He was a HORRIBLE recruiter. HORRIBLE.

Alford's first real class (his second year) was considered a top 5 class in the entire country. He was horrible at managing the team and making fans like him, but he was a good recruiter until his final couple of years, after fans had turned against him.

I'm with you that Fran brought in better talent....but jesus god, no to this.

Evans had no offense. Gabe had some offense. And really should have been a starter. And he could hit free throws. Gabe, IMO, in college was a better all around player.

LMFAO, sorry man, but Alford didn't have any top 5 class. He was recruiting very, very average guys. And was suppose to bring in Indiana talent, and only brought is scabs.

I will give you White over Worley, although Worley was more highly regarded coming out of HS. Had Gabe redshirted, I think he would have been a stud this year, but Evans is an absolute brute on the boards and was considered maybe the top JC power forward when he was recruited. Reiner was injured his last two years, or he would have had a great shot at being all conference. Woody is a solid center. Marble played better his final year than Recker, but Recker never fully recovered from his injuries before he came to Iowa.

Not trying to knock recent players at all, but Alford brought in some potentially great players. He just couldn't develop them, had some bad luck with injuries, and couldn't manage the team worth a damn. Give Fran Alford's recruits and you would have had a much higher opinion of the players.

Iowas least talented teams all time, were under Alford. Besides Lickliter of course.

Seems like your FA does a lot of thinking for you tooo_O I am no fan a Alford, who ended up being mostly a failure at Iowa, but you don't know what you are talking about.

Are you a polish a turd type of guy? Because Alford was all sizzle, no steak. The recruits some of you are quoting are/were regional scabs. Fran has basketball connections and casts a bigger net. Its just a matter of time before he starts reeling in the big ones. Bo Ryans recruiting got better, the more he established the brand. If you build it, they will come.

Lol. Reggie Evans averaged 15 points for his career and put up 1000 points. IN TWO YEARS.

Put down your drugs pipe.

I don't care what Reggie Evan averaged. He cant shoot or couldn't shoot. He was only an offensive threat on put backs. Also, Evan averaging 15 a game is a reflection of how poor the talent at Iowa was, under Alford.

And nice argument. Evans was a starter and Gabe came off the bench.

You don't want to bag on former players but you say several stunk and were scabs. Got it.

Reggie Evans also went on to have a fifteen year (and counting!) NBA career, but you're probably right. Gabe all the way.

I don't care what he does in the pros. I only care about Iowa.

Think of it this way, we missed so many shots, Reggie Evans scored 15 PPG. lol

I would take evans over gabe any day, guy was a beast. He would have been a starter this last year no doubt. Although if I remember correctly he was kinda a black hole, once someone threw it down low to him it wasn't coming back out which I remember aggravating me some. Gabe was good but pretty inconsistent and kinda a fumble fingers sometimes. With evans you knew what you were gonna get night in and night out.

Don't make me do it then. Just agree, Fran is the best coach since Olson, and that the talent he gets is better than the last 3 coaches. Then I wont have to bag on former players. Simple

We shot 45.7% Reggie's senior year, and 43.1% last year.

You're not a smart person.

And? What does that have to do with all his points coming off put backs and lay ups? So we missed 55% of the time, giving him a 50/50 shot at a put back? Ok? lol

You are tying to hard by hanging onto one phrase. You are so far in the forest, you cant see the trees. I will help you out and we will break it down nice and easy.

Did Reggie Evans have a good jump shot?

I will wait for you to process that one and answer before I move to fast for you.
